Los mejores combates del fin de semana (27-29/1/2022)

En esta semana ya encontramos un cierto aumento de actividad respecto a las anteriores, si bien sólo será una antesala de las ajetreadas jornadas que deberían tener lugar en febrero si no se producen cancelaciones inesperadas.
Jueves 27 de enero
La actividad relevante empezará este jueves con una velada protagonizada por el veterano excampeón mundial Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez, que disputará su cuarto combate desde su retorno a los cuadriláteros enfrentándose al resistente británico Macaulay McGowan.

Viernes 28 de enero
Pasando al viernes, en esta ocasión se podrán mencionar dos eventos y no sólo uno como en la anterior semana. De todos modos, no serán carteleras de demasiado relieve.
Por un lado, desde el Grand Hotel de Tijuana, México, ESPN Knockout televisará una cartelera en la que dos jóvenes boxeadores capaces pero irregulares como Adrián “El Gato” Curiel 18(3KO)-4 y Hugo “Chacal” Hernández 18(7KO)-6(1)-1 se enfrentarán en una pugna del peso mosca bien emparejada y que podría acercar al top 15 al vencedor. Dado que ambos púgiles cuentan con resultados que les podrían favorecer en comparaciones indirectas (por ejemplo, Curiel perdió contra Valladares y ganó a Óscar Nery Plata, mientras que Hernández ganó a Valladares y empató contra Nery Plata) y han dejado actuaciones por encima y por debajo de las expectativas en varias ocasiones, es difícil estar seguros sobre un pronóstico. Con todo, quizás Curiel parta ligeramente como favorito por su mejor récord parcial y por haber padecido sus únicas derrotas recientes por la mínima ante el olímpico Joselito Velázquez y el top 5 WBO “Chicharito” González.
Por otro lado, en el Hialeah Park Racing & Casino de Hialeah, Estados Unidos, se retransmitirá a través de Fite una cartelera en la que el destacado prospecto cubano Joahnys Argilagos 8(4KO)-0 disputará su primer combate pactado a diez asaltos peleando en el peso gallo contra el venezolano Michell Bánquez 19(13KO)-1. El invicto Argilagos es un bronce olímpico y dos veces oro mundial que cuenta con notable proyección a pesar de que ha generado dudas en tres de sus peleas profesionales. Aun así, será favorito para vencer a un Bánquez que no combate desde hace dos años y medio y que en su único duelo realmente relevante, el disputado en Chile contra el retador mundial Miguel González, padeció una clara derrota unánime.
Sábado 29 de enero
El único enfrentamiento con un cinturón mundial en juego en esta semana será el que protagonizarán los africanos Ilunga Makabu y Thabiso Mchunu que, en un campeonato WBC del peso crucero, disputarán una muy interesante revancha del duelo que sostuvieron en 2015.

Además de esta cartelera, el sábado tendrá lugar también un evento de Top Rank en el que se producirá una eliminatoria WBC del peso superpluma. Los contendientes en ella serán el oro olímpico, y exretador mundial, Robson Conceição y el invicto Xavier Martínez.

Más allá de los dos grandes eventos de la jornada, en este día también tendrán lugar otros interesantes duelos, como el estelar de la velada de RCC Boxing Promotions que se desarrollará en la Academia de RCC en Ekaterimburgo, Rusia, emitida por YouTube. En el combate dos extop 15 como el ruso Fedor Papazov 23(14KO)-4 y el kirguiso Akzhol Sulaimanbek Uulu 16(9KO)-1(1) pugnarán por un título menor WBC con la esperanza de posicionarse en la larga lista del Consejo en el peso ligero. En cualquier caso, Papazov es un boxeador muy competente que sólo ha padecido derrotas por mínima diferencia y ante rivales con aspiraciones, mientras que Sulaimanbek Uulu era considerado un buen prospecto hasta que fue noqueado por Mark Urvanov, así que es un combate con alicientes, potencialmente contendido y que reforzará bastante al vencedor.
También será un duelo con sentido el que disputarán en la Salle Pierre Jablonski de Châteauroux, Francia, Thomas Faure 20(2KO)-4(1)-1 y Kevin Thomas Cojean 27(10KO)-10(3)-2 por el vacante cinturón de la Unión Europea del peso semipesado. De hecho, que es un combate lógico y sin un claro favorito lo demuestra que estos dos campeones nacionales franceses empataron en el choque que sostuvieron en enero de 2021. Por ello, y aunque ni uno ni el otro parecen destinados a reinados UE demasiado largos o a alcanzar el cinturón EBU, y ni mucho menos a tener éxitos en el top 15, pelearán en una pugna crucial para sus carreras que le dará a su vencedor su primer cetro de ámbito internacional y quizás le permitirá apuntar al mayor duelo de su trayectoria profesional.
Por lo demás, en la jornada del sábado destacan otros tres escenarios:
-En el Palacio de los Deportes de Mar del Plata, Argentina, TyC Sports emitirá un campeonato por el vacante cinturón de campeón de Argentina del peso semipesado, siendo los coaspirantes Franco Ezequiel Acosta 9(7KO)-0 y Walter Gabriel Sequeira 24(16KO)-8(5)-1.
-En el Centro de Convenciones de Yucatán Siglo XXI de Mérida, México, Azteca Tv retransmitirá un duelo en el que el pegador local Omar “Pollo” Aguilar 22(21KO)-0, 11º WBC superligero, será claro favorito para imponerse al argentino Williams Andrés Herrera 11(4KO)-1, púgil que la semana pasada venció un sencillo combate en el primer asalto.
-En el Polideportivo Alexis Argüello de Managua, Nicaragua, emitido por Facebook, el exretador mundial superpluma Francisco Fonseca 28(22KO)-3(2)-2, 15º WBA, tratará de llevar a cuatro su cadena de victorias ante su compatriota Franco Gutiérrez 11(6KO)-6-2, que no tiene un buen récord parcial pero que es un boxeador competente. En esta misma cartelera pondrá fin a cerca de un año y medio de inactividad el excampeón mundial mosca Cristofer Rosales 31(21KO)-5(1), que pugnará en un rodaje contra Jerson Ortiz 17(8KO)-4.

In this week we find a certain increase in activity compared to the previous ones, although it will only be a prelude to the busy days that should take place in February if there are no unexpected cancellations.
Thursday, January 27
The relevant activity will begin this Thursday with an evening in which will headline the veteran former world champion Sergio «Maravilla» Martínez, who will have his fourth fight since his return to the ring facing the resistant British Macaulay McGowan. Read more following this link.
Friday January 28
Moving on to Friday, this time two events can be mentioned and not just one as in the previous week. In any case, the bills are not especially outstanding.
On the one hand, from the Grand Hotel in Tijuana, Mexico, ESPN Knockout will televise a card in which two capable but irregular young boxers such as Adrián “El Gato” Curiel 18(3KO)-4 and Hugo “Chacal” Hernández 18(7KO)-6(1)-1 will meet in a well matched flyweight fight that could bring the winner closer to the top 15. As both fighters have results that could favor them in indirect comparisons (for example, Curiel lost against Valladares and beat Óscar Nery Plata, while Hernández beat Valladares and drew against Nery Plata) and have had performances above and below expectations on several occasions, it is difficult to be sure about a forecast. All in all, perhaps Curiel is slight favorite due to his better partial record and for having suffered his only recent defeats by minimum margins against the Olympic Joselito Velázquez and the top 5 WBO “Chicharito” González.
On the other hand, at the Hialeah Park Racing & Casino in Hialeah, United States, a card will be broadcasted through Fite in which the Cuban prospect Joahnys Argilagos 8(4KO)-0 will have his first ten-round bout fighting in the bantamweight against Venezuelan Michell Bánquez 19(13KO)-1. The undefeated Argilagos is an Olympic bronze and two-time world gold medalist who has remarkable projection despite the fact that he has raised doubts in three of his professional fights. Even so, he will be the favorite to beat Bánquez, who has not fought for two and a half years and who in his only really relevant duel, the one in Chile against world challenger Miguel González, suffered a clear unanimous defeat.
Saturday January 29
The only confrontation with a world belt at stake this week will be the one between the Africans Ilunga Makabu and Thabiso Mchunu who, in a WBC cruiserweight championship, will battle in a very interesting rematch of the duel they had in 2015. Read more following this link.
In addition to this card, a Top Rank event will also take place on Saturday. In it will take place a WBC super featherweight eliminator between Olympic gold, and former world challenger, Robson Conceição and undefeated Xavier Martínez. Read more following this link.
Beyond the two big events of the day, other interesting duels will also take place on this day, such as the main bout of the RCC Boxing Promotions evening that will take place at the RCC Academy in Yekaterinburg, Russia, broadcasted through YouTube. In the fight, two former ranked boxers, the Russian Fedor Papazov 23(14KO)-4 and the Kyrgyz Akzhol Sulaimanbek Uulu 16(9KO)-1(1), will fight for a minor WBC title with the hope of positioning themselves on the long lightweight list. Papazov is a very competent fighter who has only suffered narrow losses against opponents with aspirations, while Sulaimanbek Uulu was considered a good prospect until he was knocked out by Mark Urvanov, so it could be an exciting and potentially contested fight that will strengthen the winner quite a bit.
It will also be a well matched duel the main bout of the card in the Salle Pierre Jablonski in Châteauroux, France, in which Thomas Faure 20(2KO)-4(1)-1 and Kevin Thomas Cojean 27(10KO)-10(3)-2 will fight for the vacant light heavyweight European Union belt. That it is a logical match and without a clear favorite is shown by the fact that these two French national champions drew in the clash they held in January 2021. For this reason, and although neither of them seems destined for too long EU reigns or to reach the EBU belt, let alone achieving successes in the top 15, they will fight in a crucial fight for their careers that will give the winner his first international title and perhaps will allow him to aim for his biggest duel to date.
Closing this article, three other scenarios stand out on Saturday:

On this same bill, former world flyweight champion Cristofer Rosales 31(21KO)-5(1) will finish nearly a year and a half of inactivity in a tune-up against Jerson Ortiz 17(8KO)-4.
