El argentino Rubén Muñoz dio sorpresa de la semana batiendo al prospecto Agrba

No es que esta eliminatoria WBA fuese, sobre el papel, un encuentro sencillo para el destacado prospecto ruso del peso superligero Khariton Agrba 15(9KO)-1(1), todo lo contrario. El argentino Rubén Nestor Neri Muñoz 18(14KO)-2(1) es un boxeador sólido, con buena pegada y que el año pasado logró el mayor triunfo de su carrera batiendo al invicto canadiense Chann Thonson. Sin embargo, Agrba, que era 2º WBA antes de esta pelea, era considerado una de las mayores promesas de la división actual y, ayudado por su gran experiencia amateur, se había mostrado muy superior a toda su oposición profesional hasta el momento, algo que contrastaba con un par de malas derrotas de Muñoz.
Pues bien, Muñoz logró un fantástico triunfo por KOT en el segundo round que dio un vuelco a su carrera y que le asegura una mayúscula pugna en el futuro próximo.
Las cosas comenzaron más o menos como siempre en las pugnas de Agrba, con éste, después de medir a su rival un tanto, empezando a imponer su gestión de los espacios al ataque y la defensa para evitar manos y conectar secos rectos y cortas pero variadas combinaciones de directo-curvo. Agrba había recibido un serio aviso en forma de un cruzado zurdo a la contra que estalló contra él, pero este fallo puntual no hacía suponer que, todavía en el segundo round, al levantarse tras intentar esquivar, iba a recibir un brutal curvo de izquierda de Muñoz que le llevaría de cabeza a la lona. Agrba se intentó levantar, pero no se podía mantener en pie estable y el árbitro, acertadamente, paró el combate.
Tras su proclamación, Muñoz citó al campeón mundial WBA del peso superligero Gary Antuanne Russell de quien teóricamente ahora es retador obligatorio. No obstante, teniendo en cuenta cómo se comporta la WBA con su gestión de campeones y defensas obligatorias, no se puede dar por sentado nada respecto a que esta pugna se materialice, siendo posible que a Muñoz se le acabe pidiendo que pelee por un título secundario ahora que la Asociación está de nuevo en proceso de expansión de sus títulos de subcampeón.

This WBA eliminator wasn’t, on paper, an easy fight for the highly-touted Russian super lightweight prospect Khariton Agrba 15(9KO)-1(1); quite the opposite. Argentina’s Rubén Nestor Neri Muñoz 18(14KO)-2(1) is a solid boxer with good punching power who last year achieved the biggest win of his career by beating the undefeated Canadian Chann Thonson. However, Agrba, who was ranked #2 by the WBA before this fight, was considered one of the division’s brightest prospects: aided by his extensive amateur experience, he had shown clear superiority over all his professional opposition so far, a stark contrast to a couple of bad losses on Muñoz’s record.
Well, despite this, Muñoz secured a fantastic second-round TKO victory that completely turned his career around and guarantees him a major fight in the near future.
Things started more or less as usual in Agrba’s fights: after sizing up his opponent a bit, he began to impose his control of space on offense and defense to evade punches and connect with crisp straight shots and short but varied straight-hook combinations. Agrba had received a serious warning in the form of a counter left hook that exploded on him, but this isolated mistake didn’t suggest that, still in the second round, as he tried to get up after attempting to duck, he would receive a brutal left hook from Muñoz that would send him head-first to the canvas. Agrba tried to stand, but he couldn’t remain stable on his feet, and the referee wisely stopped the fight.
Following his proclamation, Muñoz called out WBA super lightweight world champion Gary Antuanne Russell, of whom he is now theoretically the mandatory challenger. However, considering how the WBA manages its champions and mandatory defenses, nothing can be taken for granted regarding this fight materializing. Actually, it’s possible Muñoz might end up being asked to fight for a secondary title now that the Association is once again in the process of expanding its regular and interim titles.
