Resumen de los octavos de final del WBC Grand Prix en el peso pesado

Primera Rama
El choque entre el bosnio Alija Mesić 2(2KO)-1(1) y el sudafricano Keaton Gomes 12(10KO)-3(1) fue uno de esos cruces en los que fue decisiva la disparidad en experiencia de los contendientes, venciendo Gomes por KOT en el cuarto round.
Aunque Mesić trató de mantener la distancia y contragolpear, Gomes acortó los espacios con determinación e impactó fuertes ganchos, destacando su trabajo al torso. Esta situación fue a más, con el bosnio cada vez más cansado, hasta que, en el cuarto round, dos cruzados diestros dejaron tocado a Mesić, que cayó al tapiz por una serie de ganchos, produciéndose entonces la detención.
Por su parte, el argentino Jonathan Exequiel Vergara 8(4KO)-3(2) fue derrotado por decisión unánime a manos del estadounidense Devon Young 9(7KO)-0. Las puntuaciones fueron 59-54, 58-55, 58-55 (Bastión Boxeo 58-55).
En el primer round Vergara dejó tocado a su contrincante con un cruzado diestro, pero en el segundo asalto Young sacudió al argentino, estableciendo desde entonces en general un control de las acciones. Para ello llevó a las cuerdas a su rival recurrentemente con directos, si bien Vergara tuvo éxitos puntuales en el cuarto round y Young perdió un punto en el quinto asalto por perder el bucal reiteradas veces.
Por lo tanto, en cuartos de finales Gomes se enfrentará a Young.
Segunda Rama
En cuanto al bosnio Ahmed Krnjić 5(4KO)-0, éste batió por KOT en el quinto asalto al italiano Davide Brito 7(3KO)-2(2).
Brito trató de moverse rápido y usar el jab y el cruzado de mano adelantada junto a alguna contra, pero rápido la presión del fuerte Krnjić fue más efectiva. Los curvos de Krnjić desgastaron pronto a Brito, que paró los pies y recibió aún más golpes de poder, siendo derribado en el quinto round tras un brutal uppercut zurdo y un cruzado de izquierda. Brito se alzó pero, pese al enfado del púgil, el árbitro decidió que no podía continuar.
El uzbeko, oro olímpico y bronce mundial amateur, Lazizbek Mullojonov 7(6KO)-0 era muy claro favorito para vencer al marroquí Youness Baalla 2(2KO)-1-1, y cumplió con lo esperado venciendo por decisión unánime y tres cartulinas de 60-54 (Bastión Boxeo 60-54).
Baalla mostró gran encaje y buen uso de los bloqueos, si bien esto no le impidió ser encerrado en las cuerdas constantemente y ser objetivo de ganchos arriba y abajo, cruzados de ambas manos y directos con los que Mullojonov, sin descuidarse en defensa, se anotó asalto tras asalto.
De este modo, en cuartos habrá un choque seguramente emocionante entre Krnjić y el gran favorito del torneo Mullojonov.
Tercera Rama
La gran sorpresa en la división del peso pesado la dio el polaco Piotr Lacz 14(10KO)-0 que acabó en un round con el croata, con gran carrera amateur, Marko Milun 1(1KO)-1(1).
Con un gancho de izquierda abajo, Milun puso en el tapiz a Lacz, pero éste se levantó y, todavía en el round inicial, dejó estirado en el tapiz al croata con un excelente hook de izquierda a la cabeza.
El congoleño Reagan Apanu 3(1KO)-1 fue derrotado a manos del argentino Kevin Cristopher Ramírez 10(4KO)-0-1 por decisión unánime (triple 59-54, Bastión Boxeo 59-54).
Después de dos primeros asaltos contendidos y en los que Apanu tuvo sus momentos, en el tercer asalto Ramírez dañó a su adversario con un directo, optando entonces el congoleño por placar al argentino y caer casi fuera del ring con él. Durante unos segundos pareció que Ramírez no iba a poder continuar por estar lesionado, pero siguió, derribó a Apanu en el cuarto round con un golpe recto y obtuvo un incuestionable triunfo.
Así, en cuartos de final se producirán un choque entre fuertes y explosivos peleadores como Lacz y Ramírez.
Cuarta Rama
El duelo entre los ucranianos Tsotne Rogava 12(8KO)-0 y Vitaliy Stalchenko 10(6KO)-1 fue un espantoso ejemplo de cartulinas prefijadas antes del combate, ya que, fue una pelea muy igualada, pero dos de los jueces le dieron todos los asaltos a Rogava (60-54). El restante dio un razonable 58-56 también a su favor (Bastión Boxeo 57-57).
Durante los primeros tres asaltos, Rogava, que es mucho más grande y pesado, usó sus fuertes golpes de poder para llevarse la mejor parte, aunque no está en buena forma y hacia la mitad se cansó mucho. Entonces el móvil, activo y ligero Stalchenko se desplazó alrededor de él y le atacó con constantes series de rectos que mostraron las limitaciones y las brechas de su oponente.
Finalmente, el estadounidense Dante Stone 19(12KO)-1 se impuso al argentino Emiliano Ezequiel Mendoza 5(1KO)-1-1 por decisión unánime (doble 60-54 y un 59-55, Bastión Boxeo 59-55).
Usando su jab constantemente y algunos cruzados de mano adelantada mientras se desplazaba, Stone se anotó la mayoría de asaltos ante un Mendoza que no le presionó con la suficiente intensidad y que sólo impactó claros hooks de forma muy eventual. Posteriormente Stone disminuyó su desplazamiento, pero esto no fue aprovechado debidamente por su oponente.
De este modo, se medirán en el cruce de cuartos dos púgiles que se cansan y con sobrepeso como Rogava y Stone.

First Bracket
The clash between Bosnian Alija Mesić 2(2KO)-1(1) and South African Keaton Gomes 12(10KO)-3(1) was one of those bouts where the disparity in experience between the contenders was decisive, with Gomes winning by fourth round TKO.
Although Mesić tried to maintain distance and counterpunch, Gomes determinedly closed the gap and landed strong hooks, his work to the body standing out. This situation worsened for the increasingly tired Bosnian until, in the fourth round, two right hooks hurt Mesić, who was knocked down and stopped with a combination of hooks.
On the other hand, Argentinian Jonathan Exequiel Vergara 8(4KO)-3 (2) was defeated by unanimous decision by American Devon Young 9(7KO)-0. The scores were 59-54, 58-55, 58-55 (Bastion Boxing 58-55).
In the first round, Vergara rocked his opponent with a right hook, but in the second round, Young hurt the Argentinian, establishing a certain control of the action from then on. To achieve this, he repeatedly took his opponent to the ropes with straight shots, although Vergara had occasional successes in the fourth round and Young lost a point in the fifth round for repeatedly missing his mouthguard.
Therefore, Gomes will face Young in the quarterfinals.
Second Bracket
Bosnian Ahmed Krnjić 5(4KO)-0 defeated Italian Davide Brito 7(3KO)-2(2) by TKO in the fifth round.
Brito tried to move quickly and use his jab and check hooks, along with some counters, but the pressure from the powerful Krnjić quickly became more effective. Krnjić’s hooks quickly wore Brito down, so the Italian stopped his feet and took even more power punches before being knocked down in the fifth round after a brutal left uppercut and a left hook. Brito got up, but despite the fighter’s anger, the referee stopped the bout.
Uzbek Olympic gold medalist and world bronze medalist Lazizbek Mullojonov 7(6KO)-0 was a clear favorite to defeat Moroccan Youness Baalla 2 (2KO)-1-1, and he lived up to expectations, winning by unanimous decision and three 60-54 scorecards (Bastion Boxing 60-54).
Baalla showed great chin and blocked well, although this didn’t prevent him from being constantly pinned on the ropes and being the target of uppercuts, hooks and straight hands with which Mullojonov scored round after round without forgetting his defense.
Thus, the quarterfinals will surely be an exciting clash between Krnjić and the tournament’s favorite Mullojonov.
Third Bracket
The big upset in the heavyweight division came from Poland’s Piotr Lacz 14(10KO)-0, who got rid of Croatian Marko Milun 1(1KO)-1 (1) in one round.
With a left hook down, Milun knocked Lacz to the mat, but he got up and, still in the opening round, flattened the Croatian on the mat with an excellent left hook to the head.
Congolese Reagan Apanu 3(1KO)-1 was defeated by Argentinian Kevin Cristopher Ramírez 10(4KO)-0-1 by unanimous decision (three 59-54 cards, Bastion Boxing 59-54).
After two contested first rounds in which Apanu had his moments, Ramírez hurt his opponent with a straight punch in the third round. The Congolese then opted to tackle the Argentinian, nearly knocking him out of the ring. For a few seconds, it seemed that Ramírez would be unable to continue due to injury, but he continued, knocking down Apanu in the fourth round with a straight punch and earning an unquestionable victory.
Thus, the quarterfinals will feature a clash between strong and explosive fighters like Lacz and Ramírez.
Fourth Bracket
The duel between Ukrainians Tsotne Rogava 12(8KO)-0 and Vitaliy Stalchenko 10 (6KO)-1 was a terrible example of fixed scorecards. It was a very close fight, but two of the judges gave every round to Rogava (60-54). The other judge scored the bout reasonably with a 58-56 in his favor (Bastion Boxing 57-57).
During the first three rounds, Rogava, who is much bigger and heavier, used his strong power punches to gain the upper hand, although he was not in good shape and grew very tired halfway through. Then the mobile, active, and nimble Stalchenko moved around him and attacked with constant combinations of straight punches that exposed his opponent’s limitations and flaws.
Lastly, American Dante Stone 19(12KO)-1 defeated Argentinian Emiliano Ezequiel Mendoza 5(1KO)-1-1 by unanimous decision (two 60-54 and one 59-55, Bastion Boxing 59-55).
Constantly using his jab and some lead hooks while moving, Stone won most of the rounds against Mendoza, who did not pressure him with enough intensity and only landed clear hooks occasionally. Later in the fight Stone slowed and even stopped his movement, but this was not taken advantage of by his opponent.
Thus, two boxers with overweight and stamina issues like Rogava and Stone will face off in the quarterfinals.
