El plan era que el estadounidense Branden Pizarro 20(11KO)-2-1 afrontase un paso adelante que le diese experiencia y le dejase preparado para alguna prueba decisiva a finales de año, quizás ya situado en el top 10 WBA del peso superligero. Sin embargo, peleando en su ciudad natal y de residencia, Pizarro sin duda adquirió experiencia, pero fue sorprendido por su compatriota Israel Mercado 13(7KO)-1-2, que mostró claramente su deseo de ganar con su desempeño y elección táctica y obtuvo una victoria por decisión mayoritaria. Los jueces dieron un 93-97, un 94-96 demasiado ajustado y un 95-95 localista. La puntuación de Bastión Boxeo fue de 92-98 para Mercado.
Pizarro trató de usar su jab y escogidos golpes desde la distancia media-larga para neutralizar a su contrincante, pero Mercado mostró buenos reflejos para evitar manos y, en cuanto encontró el momento, acortó los espacios, llevó a las cuerdas a su contrincante y descargó contra él veloces y agresivas combinaciones. Además, cuando lo hacía erraba manos y en ocasiones incluso era él el que recibía contragolpes.
A partir del cuarto asalto, y de forma breve en algunos rounds posteriores, Pizarro en ocasiones intentó anticiparse, tomar la iniciativa y atacar a su contrincante antes de que tuviese tiempo de desplegar sus ofensivas, pero esto sólo le dio éxitos parciales y no fue capaz de mantenerse sobre esa táctica de forma consistente. Por ello, la pelea siempre volvía al esquema inicial, con Mercado apoyándose en sus ofensivas y sus combinaciones y en su superior frecuencia de golpeo y acierto con golpes significativos para lograr llevarse los asaltos y asegurarse un buen triunfo.
En virtud de él, Mercado, que recordemos tuvo una meritoria actuación ante Biyarslanov, debería ganarse una nueva importante oportunidad en el último tercio del año, en la cual se dirimirá si es simplemente una piedra de toque incómoda y muy capaz que puede aprovecharse de los rivales con problemas de solidez o si tiene el nivel para aspirar a triunfos entre los aspirantes de la categoría.

The plan was for American Branden Pizarro 20 (11KO)-2-1 to take a step up that would give him experience and prepare him for a decisive test later in the year, perhaps already positioned in the WBA’s top 10 in the super lightweight division. However, fighting in his hometown, Pizarro certainly gained experience, but was upset by fellow countryman Israel Mercado 13(7KO)-1-2, who clearly showed his will to win with his performance and tactical choice, earning a majority decision victory. The judges scored the bout 93-97, a too close 94-96, and a biased 95-95. Bastion Boxing scored it 92-98 for Mercado.
Pizarro tried to use his jab and some straight punches from mid-long range to neutralize his opponent, but Mercado displayed good reflexes to avoid shots and, as soon as he found the opportunity, closed the gap, took his opponent to the ropes, and unleashed quick and aggressive combinations. The local boxer had evident difficulties responding to these attacks and was unable to sustain the fight in the center of the ring for long periods. Furthermore, when he did it, he missed hands and sometimes even received counterpunches.
From the fourth round onward, and briefly in subsequent rounds, Pizarro occasionally attempted to anticipate, take the initiative, and attack his opponent before he had time to deploy his offensives, but this only brought him partial success and he was unable to maintain this tactic consistently. Because of this, the fight always returned to the initial point, with Mercado relying on his attacks with combinations, and on his superior output and precision with power punches, to take the rounds and secure a solid win.
With this win, Mercado, who had a commendable performance against Biyarslanov, earned another important opportunity in the final four months of the year, which will determine whether he’s simply a tricky and highly capable stepping stone who can take advantage of opponents who lack solidity or whether he has the level to aspire to achieve victories among the contenders in the division.
