Previa: Adames-Williams, Martínez-Bornea y Lubin-Arias en velada de PBC

El pasado reciente del peso superwélter ha estado marcado por la irregularidad de muchos de sus top 15. Por ejemplo, Carlos Adames tuvo una buena racha antes de ser vencido contra pronóstico por Patrick Teixeira, que a su vez había perdido contra pronóstico ante Curtis Stevens. Por otro lado, Jarrett Hurd se convirtió en campeón unificado contra Erislandy Lara antes de que Julian “J-Rock” Williams le derrotase por sorpresa y este último fuese a su vez vencido contra pronóstico en su casa por Jeison Rosario, que perdió sus títulos en la primera defensa ante Jermell Charlo, etc.
Con el paso de las temporadas, varios destacados peso superwélter han ascendido al peso medio, donde intentan evitar volver a padecer reveses inesperados y estabilizar sus carreras antes de aspirar a lograr una corona mundialista. Es en este sentido que se tiene que entender el choque entre los citados Adames 22(17KO)-1 y Williams 28(16KO)-3(2)-1 por el título interino WBC del peso medio que se producirá este sábado en el The Armory en Minneapolis, Estados Unidos.
Hay que recordar que la espantosa corrupción y la codicia del WBC han permitido que Jermall Charlo se mantenga como campeón mundial pese a no haber realizado ni una sola defensa durante dos años, situación simplemente increíble e inaceptable que el Consejo va a aprovechar para crear otro título interino más y maximizar sus ganancias.
En el enfrentamiento Adames-Williams, el primero parte como favorito con cierto margen, ya que se considera que “J-Rock” está en declive y que tiene menos potencia y encaje que el dominicano. En otras palabras, si bien en su mejor noche Williams brilló ante Jarrett Hurd y rindió a un nivel más alto que Adames en toda su carrera, es verdad también que este último no ha tenido ni por asomo noches tan malas como las que el estadounidense tuvo ante Rosario, Charlo y Vladimir Hernández.
Así, y valorándose que cada vez el rendimiento de Williams parece más irregular y que su físico ha dado algunas muestras de flaqueza, se piensa que un Adames contundente con los golpes de poder podría causar estragos si no duda y se muestra agresivo y tenaz, necesitando por su parte el púgil local volver a encontrar su mejor boxeo para lograr una victoria que no es imposible pero que sobre el papel resulta improbable.
Exigente defensa
También en el evento, el argentino, campeón mundial IBF del peso supermosca, Fernando Daniel Martínez 15(8KO)-0 por tercera vez consecutiva se enfrentará a un boxeador filipino, siendo en esta ocasión su contrincante el invicto aspirante obligatorio Jade Bornea 18(12KO)-0. Tras sus dos victorias sobre el hábil Jerwin Ancajas, es inevitable considerar que Martínez debería poder vencer a un Bornea con menos recursos técnicos y menos experiencia que su compatriota. Sin embargo, aunque Martínez es favorito, este parece uno de esos combates engañosos en los que el invicto aspirante podría superar las expectativas apoyándose en su voluntad de victoria, su fortaleza y su pegada.
En cualquier caso, aunque probablemente será un enfrentamiento con bastantes intercambios y entretenido y en el que Bornea tiene una opción si encuentra huecos para contragolpear a su agresivo rival, la cadencia de ataques, el ritmo, la selección de golpes y la capacidad para reducir los espacios de Martínez parece que deberían ser elementos decisivos.
Aunque el arriba citado encuentro será un mundial, realmente el semifondo de la cartelera será un duelo entre dos muy inconsistentes peso superwélter como Erickson Lubin 24(17KO)-2(2) y Luis Arias 20(9KO)-3-1. A este combate ambos boxeadores llegarán con más de un año de inactividad y tras dispares actuaciones y resultados, lo que hace que el duelo sea interesante para muchos. De todos modos, aunque es un encuentro bien emparejado y que servirá al ganador para alzarse a una importante oportunidad, son mayoría los que piensan que ambos han mostrado demasiadas brechas como para que se les pueda considerar potenciales aspirantes destacados a estas alturas.
Estos tres combates serán emitidos en Estados Unidos por Showtime el sábado desde las 21:00 ET/18:00 PT, las 3:00 de la madrugada del sábado al domingo en hora de España.

The recent past of the super welterweight division has been marked by the inconsistency of many of its top 15 fighters. For example, Carlos Adames had a good run before being upset by Patrick Teixeira, who had in turn lost unexpectedly to Curtis Stevens. On the other hand, Jarrett Hurd became unified champion against Erislandy Lara before Julian «J-Rock» Williams shocked him. However, Williams was in turn defeated in an upset fighting at home against Jeison Rosario, who lost his titles in his first defense against Jermell Charlo, etc.
Over time, several important super welterweight names have moved up to middleweight, where they are trying to avoid unexpected setbacks again and are seeking to stabilize their careers before aiming for a world title opportunity. It is in this context that the aforementioned fighters Adames 22(17KO)-1 and Williams 28(16KO)-3(2)-1 will clash for the WBC interim middleweight title this Saturday at The Armory in Minneapolis, United States.
It must be remembered that the appalling corruption and greediness of the WBC has allowed Jermall Charlo to remain as world champion despite not having made a single defense for two years, a simply incredible and unacceptable situation that the World Boxing Council is going to take advantage of to create another interim title to maximize its profits.
In the Adames-Williams matchup, the former is the betting favorite, since «J-Rock» is considered to be declining and has less power and worse chin than the Dominican. In other words, although on his best night Williams shone against Jarrett Hurd and performed at a higher level than Adames in his entire career, it is also true that the latter has not had nights nearly as bad as the ones the American had against Rosario, Charlo and Vladimir Hernández.
Thus, and taking into account that each time Williams’ performance seems more irregular and that he has showed some sings of physical weakness, the general opinion is that the forceful Adames could generate decisive damage with his power punches if he does not hesitate and is aggressive and tenacious, while the local fighter will need to recover his best boxing to achieve a win that is not impossible but looks improbable on paper.
A challenging defense
Also on the event, Argentine IBF super flyweight champion Fernando Daniel Martínez 15(8KO)-0 will face a Filipino boxer for the third time in a row, this time his opponent being the undefeated mandatory challenger Jade Bornea 18(12KO)-0. After his two victories over the skilled Jerwin Ancajas, it is inevitable to consider that Martínez should be able to beat Bornea, who has less technical resources and less experience than his compatriot. However, while Martinez is the favorite, this looks like one of those tricky bouts where the undefeated challenger could exceed expectations relying on his will to win, his strength and his punch.
In any case, while it will likely be an entertaining matchup with many exchanges in which Bornea has a chance of success if he can find openings to counter his aggressive opponent, Martínez’s pace, punch output, shot selection and ability to reduce distance seem to be decisive elements in his favor.
Although the above mentioned bout will have a world belt at stake, the co-feature fight will be a duel between two very inconsistent super welterweights like Erickson Lubin 24(17KO)-2(2) and Luis Arias 20(9KO)-3-1. Both boxers will step into the ring after more than a year of inactivity and after disparate performances and results, which makes the clash interesting for many. In any case, although it is a well-matched bout that will serve the winner to get an important opportunity, the majority think that both have shown too many flaws to be considered potential outstanding contenders at this point in their careers.
