El prospecto español del peso supermedio José Luis Navarro Jr. 7(7KO)-1(1) había mostrado evidente potencial en sus escasos combates y parecía que estaba listo para derrotar a un púgil veterano y 18 años mayor que él como Ronny Landaeta 20(12KO)-4(1), que pese a ser sólido y competente en los últimos tiempos había perdido rendimiento respecto a su momento de plenitud. Sin embargo, tal y como le pasó a Sánchez Romero ante Davide Tassi el viernes, la falta de experiencia de calidad de Navarro Jr. fue decisiva, llevándole a cometer fallos que no habría hecho con más bagaje y a una inesperada derrota por KOT en el sexto asalto.
El pegador Navarro salió a presionar a su contrincante tirando jabs, ganchos zurdos y algunos directos, puños que fueron alcanzando a su contrincante y con los que el fogueado Landaeta intentó lidiar desplazándose y realizando astutas acciones defensivas. En algún momento Landaeta, que tenía una notable desventaja en altura (12 cm menos), intentó contestar con sus curvos de manera oportuna mientras estaba bajo ataque, pero por lo general fue perdiendo los asaltos claramente ante los golpes de poder de Navarro y fue dando muestras tempranas de cansancio.
De todos modos, con sus bloqueos y sus pasos laterales Landaeta no estaba recibiendo puños demoledores y aprovechó un momento en el que Navarro quedó en una esquina para golpearle con curvos y mostrar las brechas en corta del invicto en el quinto asalto.
Entonces Navarro, que nunca había ido más allá del cuarto round, empezó a parecer súbitamente desgastado y a perder tensión muscular y explosividad, así que en el sexto asalto no encajó bien un cruzado diestro a la contra de Landaeta que le sorprendió y que le dejó tocado. Navarro se replegó y quedó encerrado en una esquina, en la que fue golpeado sin respuesta y sin que fuese capaz de reaccionar ya fuese con un clinch, poniendo la rodilla en la lona, contragolpeando o dando un paso lateral. Por ello se produjo el KOT.
Los elementos positivos que posee, es decir altura, juventud, pegada, etc., Navarro los sigue teniendo, y no es un gran demérito quedarse corto en un drástico paso adelante en el que había vencido claramente el primer tercio. Con todo, aunque fue víctima de su inexperiencia y podría salir reforzado de esta lección, es evidente que Navarro tiene muchas cosas en las que trabajar, en especial su tendencia a golpear en la distancia media sin necesidad, su gestión defensiva, su reacción bajo presión y su boxeo en corta.
En cuanto a Landaeta, aunque no se esperaba que volviese a renacer tras sus dificultades en un combate a seis rounds ante Nizar Trimech y su dura derrota por KOT ante el muy prometedor Christian Mbilli, ha sumado una valiosa victoria que muestra la importancia de la experiencia ante rivales de nivel y que, más allá del título nacional español y de un buen posicionamiento en las listas europeas, seguramente le valdrá alguna nueva llamada para hacer de test a otro púgil con aspiraciones internacionales.

Spanish super middleweight prospect José Luis Navarro Jr. 7(7KO)-1(1) had shown obvious potential in his few bouts and seemed ready to defeat a veteran fighter 18 years older like Ronny Landaeta 20(12KO)-4(1), who despite being solid and competent in recent times had lost a step. However, as happened to Sánchez Romero against Davide Tassi on Friday, Navarro Jr.’s lack of quality experience was decisive, something that lead him to making mistakes he would not have made with more rounds and to an upset TKO loss in the sixth round.
The puncher Navarro put pressure on his opponent throwing jabs, left hooks and some right hands, shots that hit his opponent and with which the seasoned Landaeta tried to deal by moving and performing astute defensive actions. At some point Landaeta, who had a notable height disadvantage (12 cm or 5” less), tried to answer with his hooks in an opportune manner while under attack, but generally he was clearly losing the rounds against Navarro’s power shots and he was showing early signs of fatigue.
Still, with his blocks and sidesteps Landaeta was not taking crushing blows, and he took advantage of a moment when Navarro was cornered to hit him with hooks and demonstrate his flaws at short range in the fifth round.
Then Navarro, who had never gone beyond the fourth round, suddenly began to look worn out and to lose explosiveness, so in the sixth round he did not took well a right overhand from Landaeta, who surprised and hurt him with that punch. Navarro backed and was locked in a corner, in which he was hit without response and without being able to react clinching, putting a knee on the canvas, counterattacking or taking a side step. So the referee stopped the bout.
Navarro has positive elements as height, youth, punching power, etc., and it is not a tragedy to fall short in a drastic step up in competition in which he had clearly won the first third of the fight. All in all, although he was the victim of his inexperience and might come out stronger from this lesson, it is clear that Navarro has many things to work on, especially his tendency to punch at mid-range without need to do it, his defensive management, his reaction under pressure and his boxing at close range.
As for Landaeta, although he was not expected to achieve important successes after his troubles in a six-round fight against Nizar Trimech and his tough TKO loss against the very promising Christian Mbilli, he has scored a big victory that shows the importance of experience against high-level opposition. And with this win, beyond securing the Spanish national title and a good position in the European rankings, he will surely receive a new call to test another fighter with international aspirations.
