Alycia Baumgardner se anotó dos knockdowns sobre valiente Mekhaled en victoria unánime y se proclamó campeona indiscutida

Como se podía esperar, la estadounidense Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner 14(7KO)-1 hizo valer sus cualidades físicas y técnicas para anotarse dos caídas y hacerse con una victoria unánime y el título indiscutido superpluma ante la valiente francesa Elhem “The Diamond” Mekhaled 15(3KO)-2, quien pese a terminar derrotada ofreció una actuación meritoria por el castigo aguantado y la persistencia mostrada. Las puntuaciones de 99-89, 99-89 y 98-90 fueron muy excesivas, puesto que es indudable que Mekhaled ganó más de un round a pesar de que dos de los jueces sólo le dieron eso.
El jab de Baumgardner empezó como siempre afilado y rápido, pero Mekhaled sacó sobre él buenas derechas rectas al mentón. La estadounidense no pareció dar importancia alguna a esos golpes, que no llevaban gran potencia, pero le estaban alcanzando con demasiada claridad y frecuencia. Además, estaba permitiendo a su contrincante intercambiar demasiado tiempo en la distancia media, aunque en el tercer asalto Baumgardner aprovechó el empuje de su rival para contragolpearla con un derechazo que la dañó y fue el causante de un knockdown. Antes de que terminase el round “The Bomb” castigó mucho con andanadas de rectos y curvos a Mekhaled, que volvió a sufrir una cuenta.
La francesa mostró gran valentía soportando los golpes y volviendo a la carga en los siguientes episodios, teniendo entonces éxitos con sus directos diestros y sus ganchos zurdos ante una Baumgardner sobreconfiada y algo cansada por el esfuerzo realizado en el tercer asalto. De todos modos, la diferencia en potencia, explosividad y ejecución de golpeo de ambas era abismal, por lo que el tesón puesto por la visitante normalmente quedó neutralizado por los certeros y sólidos golpes de poder de Baumgardner, que dejó seriamente tocada a Mekhaled en el séptimo asalto con un gran hook zurdo arriba.
Aun así, Mekhaled se mantuvo en la pelea y continuó luchando aguerrida, mientras que llegado el combate al noveno round Baumgardner parecía exhausta, recibiendo repetidos golpes ante los que tuvo un mal lenguaje corporal. Sin embargo, en el último tramo del round final la estadounidense sacó combinaciones de hooks que llegaron con dureza ante Mekhaled, que de haber tenido más pegada habría podido generar muchas más dificultades.
Ahora que Baumgardner se ha proclamado campeona indiscutida se abre un abanico de enormes oportunidades para ella, destacando posibles duelos antes las titulares indiscutidas del peso pluma y del peso ligero, respectivamente Amanda Serrano y Katie Taylor. A estas peleas hay que sumar otras con notable interés, como una revancha ante Mikaela Mayer o potenciales choques ante púgiles como, por ejemplo, Delfine Persoon.
Así que a Baumgardner más le valdrá descansar un poco y ponerse a trabajar para intentar mejorar su resistencia al cansancio antes de que posiblemente le llegue una pelea trascendental para su carrera a lo largo de esta temporada.

As could be expected, American Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner 14(7KO)-1 was able to assert her physical and technical qualities to score two knockdowns and obtain a unanimous decision victory and the undisputed super featherweight title against the brave French Elhem “The Diamond ” Mekhaled 15(3KO)-2, who despite ending up defeated offered a commendable performance due to the quantity of punishment endured and the persistence shown. The scores of 99-89, 99-89 and 98-90 were too wide, as Mekhaled undoubtedly won more than one round despite two of the judges only giving her that.
Baumgardner’s jab started out as always sharp and fast, but Mekhaled landed over it good straight right hands to the chin. The American did not seem to give any importance to those blows, which did not carry great power, but were hitting her with too much clearness and frequency. In addition, she was allowing her opponent to spend too much time trading at middle range, although in the third round Baumgardner took advantage of Mekhaled’s aggressiveness to counter her with a right hand that hurt her and caused a knockdown. Before the end of the round «The Bomb» punished Mekhaled with barrages of straight hands and hooks, so the visitor suffered another count.
The Frenchwoman showed great courage enduring the punches and returning to the attack in the following rounds, then having successes with her right hands and her left hooks against an overconfident Baumgardner, who also looked somewhat tired from the effort made in the third round. In any case, the difference in power, explosiveness and punching technique between the two boxers was huge, so the tenacity offered by the visitor was usually neutralized by Baumgardner’s accurate and solid power shots, highlighting a hard left hook that staggered Mekhaled in the seventh round.
Despite it, Mekhaled stayed in the fight and continued to battle fiercely, and by the ninth round Baumgardner looked exhausted, taking repeated blows at the same time she showed a bad body language. But in the last stretch of the final round, the American still landed hard combinations of hooks against Mekhaled, who, if she had had more punch, could have caused much more difficulties.
Now that Baumgardner has become undisputed champion, she is in reach of huge opportunities, standing out possible fights against the undisputed featherweight and lightweight titleholders, respectively Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor. To these bouts it must be added other clashes with considerable interest, such as a rematch against Mikaela Mayer or even potential matchups against fighters such as Delfine Persoon. So Baumgardner should get some rest and start working to improve her stamina before a possible career-defining fight in this season.
