Catorce meses después de su último combate, nada ha cambiado en lo boxístico para el peso superwélter ucraniano Serhii Bohachuk 21(21KO)-1(1), que en su retorno al cuadrilátero mostró sus brechas en la distancia corta pero logró imponer su descomunal pegada, mantener su 100% de knockouts y batir en el segundo round al tenaz estadounidense Aaron Coley 16(7KO)-5(1)-1.
Pese a la rápida derrota, Coley, que no había sido batido antes del límite nunca en su carrera y que prácticamente siempre había perdido por mínima diferencia, ofreció una actuación hasta cierto punto meritoria, aunque apoyada en una errada estrategia.
Inicialmente, el zurdo Coley se movió en el ring lanzando directos y breves combinaciones, pero viendo que podía llegar bien con sus manos ante los huecos defensivos de su rival, decidió aceptar una pelea física con frecuentes intercambios cuerpo a cuerpo. Esta muy arriesgada decisión le llevó a conectar alguna buena mano, pero también favoreció que terminase quedando algo tocado al final del primer asalto.
Aun así, el estadounidense siguió en el mismo planteamiento, cruzando golpes peligrosamente, hasta que con un gancho zurdo sorprendió y desequilibró a Bohachuk. No obstante, el ucraniano respondió inmediatamente intensificando sus acciones a través de directos y ganchos hasta que poco después, con una dura combinación de hooks a la cabeza, hizo a Coley poner la rodilla en la lona. El efecto de las potentes manos de Bohachuk supuso que Coley tardase hasta el diez de la cuenta del árbitro para alzarse, de modo que, aunque el púgil protestó, el tercer hombre no hizo nada mal hecho al detener el duelo.
Recordando que Brandon Adams, que iba perdiendo el combate, logró aprovechar los descuidos defensivos de Bohachuk para asestarle su única derrota, los momentáneos apuros padecidos por éste ante Coley sugieren que, como tantos otros pegadores, sus cualidades ofensivas no son equiparables a su encaje y defensa y que, más pronto que tarde, esto podría volver a pasarle factura.
Pero pese al óxido por falta de ring, al estrés de tener a su familia en un país en guerra y a enfrentarse a un púgil capaz, Bohachuk volvió a mostrar tanto su capacidad de definición como su facilidad para generar encuentros emocionantes. Así, y siendo 9º WBC en una división muy contendida, es de esperar que Bohachuk pueda recibir una importante oportunidad a lo largo de 2023.

Fourteen months after his last fight, nothing has changed in the boxing aspect for the Ukrainian super welterweight Serhii Bohachuk 21(21KO)-1(1), who on his return to the ring showed his flaws in the short distance but managed to impose his huge punch, maintained his 100% knockout ratio and beat the tenacious American Aaron Coley 16(7KO)-5(1)-1 in the second round.
Despite the quick defeat and a mistaken strategy, Coley, who had never been stopped before in his career and who almost always had lost by narrow difference, offered a somewhat meritorious performance.
Initially, the southpaw Coley moved around the ring throwing straight shots and short combinations, but as he saw that he could land well his hands taking advantage of his opponent’s defensive breaches, he decided to accept a physical fight with frequent exchanges at close range. This very risky decision led him to connect some good hands, but he ended up being a bit hurt at the end of the first round.
Even so, the American continued in the same approach, dangerously trading shots, until with a left hook he surprised and unbalanced Bohachuk. However, the Ukrainian answered immediately by intensifying his actions through straight hands and hooks until, shortly after, with a hard combination of hooks to the head made Coley put a knee on the canvas. The effect of Bohachuk’s powerful hands meant that it took Coley until the ten in the count to get up, so although the fighter protested, the referee did nothing wrong by stopping the duel.
Remembering that Brandon Adams, who was losing the fight, managed to take advantage of Bohachuk’s defensive flaws to deal him his only loss, the momentary difficulties the Ukrainian suffered against Coley suggest that, like so many other punchers, his offensive qualities are not comparable to his chin and defense and that, sooner rather than later, this could take its toll again.
But despite the ring rust, the stress of having his family in a country at war and facing a competent fighter, Bohachuk once again showed both his ability to finish bouts and his capacity to generate exciting matches. Thus, and being 9th WBC in a highly contested division, probably Bohachuk will receive an important opportunity throughout 2023.
