A pesar de que tenía una gran desventaja en experiencia profesional, el invicto peso gallo Jordan Purkiss 5(1KO)-0 estuvo más que a la altura de las circunstancias en su primer choque ante un rival con récord positivo y derrotó a los puntos (juez-árbitro 98-94) a Ryan Walker 12(3KO)-4(2), cuyas únicas derrotas recientes habían llegado ante el campeón mundial Paul Butler y el campeón de Europa Lee McGregor.
Purkiss inició el combate con buen pie desequilibrando con una derecha recta en el primer asalto a Walker, que posteriormente intentó tomar el centro del ring y sorprender con arremetidas con su jab pero que erró muchos golpes. En cambio, Purkiss se movió ante las ofensivas con hook de su oponente, contragolpeó con uppercuts de derecha y sacó nuevos directos diestros que fueron los golpes más llamativos, y que además en ocasiones le permitieron descargar posteriormente algún ataque con su rival de espaldas a las cuerdas.
Pese a las ocasiones en las que fue algo estremecido, Walker siempre se rehizo rápido, trató de recuperar la iniciativa y lanzó hooks zurdos, jabs y algunos directos diestros, teniendo quizás sus mejores momentos hacia la mitad, cuando Purkiss no reaccionó rápido ante la presión. Pero cuando posteriormente el imbatido se mostró más activo con sus manos, volvió a estar más atento para contragolpear y se anticipó un tanto al despliegue de Walker con su jab, volvió a ganar rounds de forma consecutiva y, aunque hubo minutos bastante disputados, certificó su merecida victoria.
Con sólo cinco combates como profesional, Purkiss va adelantado a lo que suele ser el ritmo habitual de prospectos, ya que ha disputado ya su primer combate a diez asaltos y ha ganado su primera pelea titular, además ante un rival más fogueado que él. No obstante, dado que en el ámbito británico no hay una gran cantidad de boxeadores en la división del peso gallo, esto podría llegar a suponerle verse empujado hacia peleas demasiado exigentes respecto a su experiencia, siendo posible por ejemplo que se le pueda nombrar coaspirante al vacante título inglés junto a un púgil notablemente correoso.

Although he was at obvious disadvantage regarding pro experience, unbeaten bantamweight Jordan Purkiss 5(1KO)-0 more than rose to the occasion in his first matchup against an opponent with a positive record and defeated on points (judge-referee, 98-94) Ryan Walker 12(3KO)-4(2), whose only recent losses had come against world champion Paul Butler and European champion Lee McGregor.
Purkiss started the fight on the right foot by throwing off balance Walker in the first round with a straight hand. Walker subsequently tried to take the center of the ring and surprise his opponent with jabs jumping forward, but missed many blows. By contrast, Purkiss moved in the ring reacting to his opponent’s offensives with hooks, counterpunched with right uppercuts and landed new right hands that were the most striking blows, and which also sometimes allowed him to later unleash attacks with Walker on the ropes.
Despite the occasions in which he was rocked a bit, Walker always recovered quickly, tried to regain the initiative and threw left hooks, jabs and a few straight right hands, having perhaps his best moments towards the half of the bout, when Purkiss didn’t react fast enough to the pressure. But when later the undefeated was more active with his hands, more ready to counterattack and landed his jab before Walker’s attacks, he won consecutive rounds again and, although there were quite contested minutes, he secured a deserved victory.
With only five fights as a professional, Purkiss is advancing at faster pace than it is usual for prospects, since he has already faced his first ten-round bout and has won his first title fight, and against an opponent more seasoned than him. However, given that in the British scene there are not many boxers in the bantamweight division, this could lead to him being pushed into matches that are too demanding for his experience. In fact, it is possible, for example, that he could be selected as challenger for the English vacant title alongside a remarkably tough fighter.
