Sivenathi Nontshinga was crowned light flyweight world champion in extraordinary war against Héctor Flores

Centro de Usos Múltiples, Hermosillo, Mexico. World championship for the vacant IBF light flyweight belt.

The best victory option for the Mexican Héctor Flores 20(10KO)-1-4 was to create an intense battle against the South African Sivenathi “Special One” Nontshinga 11(9KO)-0, and he definitely did it. However, not only Flores was willing to fight relentlessly at short distance, since Nontshinga answered with tremendous determination, and he even achieved the split decision victory. However the verdict was questionable, specially the ridiculous score of 116-111 for Nontshinga, which was accompanied by a more reasonable card of 114-113 in favor of the South African and by a scorecard of 115-112 for Flores that was perhaps the more accurate.

In the first round, Nontshinga’s speed and reach served him to hit his opponent from long range through jabs and straight rights, so Flores decided to be more aggressive in the second round. However, an unexpected overhand right knocked him to the mat. This would have dissuaded many fighters, but faced with the difficulties, the Mexican increased his pressure in the third round, throwing constant hooks at close distance. At first Nontshinga answered with a lot of tenacity, but little by little he seemed a bit tired by the relentless work of Flores, who hit him with innumerable hooks.

Not wanting to lose his first world title bout and his undefeated record, the South African answered desperately in the exchanges, causing also a cut on the local’s forehead in a clash of heads. But Flores withstood any response from his opponent and kept unleashing his hands with incredible fierceness.

The exhaustion began to affect both boxers, who after the half point seemed to continue fighting with so much grit only for their ambition of victory, but Nontshinga dealt then a bit worse with the situation, losing consecutive rounds due to the punch output from Flores, who even without energies kept throwing his shots.

In any case, Nontshinga resistance did not collapse and he continued to do everything he could to, with sporadic counters, hooks at short range or clinches, keep the actions very contested or even win rounds. Thus, until the end, this was a clash full of action in which neither of them spared efforts.

Contrasting the number of Flores’ punches and the clarity of Nontshinga’s shots, perhaps depending on the judge’s criteria, it could be considered that one or the other was deserving of victory in this, in general, even match. All in all, it was surprising that in a fight in Mexico the precision of the South African’s less numerous hands was better regarded than Flores’ work rate, especially considering that a judge only gave the local four rounds…

Be that as it may, Nontshinga is now world champion after coming out with his arm raised in a bout considered by many one of the best of the year, so he enters in a good position the most important moment of his career. For now, his priority should be to make defenses to increase his professional experience, since it is said that Hiroto Kyoguchi and Kenshiro Teraji have finally agreed a WBA-WBC unification and that Jonathan González, WBO titleholder, will face the winner, which gives Nontshinga time to focus on his reign without looking at the other champions.
