El enfrentamiento era un cruce de caminos entre un púgil que iba a menos en su carrera y otro que iba a más, y tras él las tendencias de ambos boxeadores se afianzaron. Es decir, mientras el estadounidense Gabriel Flores Jr. 21(7KO)-2 fue derribado tres veces y derrotado por decisión unánime, bajando otro escalón más en su valoración, su compatriota Giovanni Cabrera 21(7KO)-0 sumó el mayor triunfo de su carrera en su oportunidad más significativa hasta la fecha. Las puntuaciones fueron de triple 98-89.
La negativa impresión que generó Flores en sus actuaciones ante López y Montoya se vio si cabe agrandada ante un boxeador invicto, motivado y lleno de ambición como Cabrera. Y es que en líneas generales Flores se mantuvo en el centro del ring bastante estático, con un boxeo realmente simple y con obvias brechas defensivas.
Con unos segundos transcurridos un directo zurdo precedido por un cruzado diestro puso en el tapiz a Flores, que volvió a caer posteriormente por directos zurdos y ganchos diestros. La conclusión no llegó ahí, pero Cabrera siguió conectando sus puños rectos y su hook de mano adelantada antes de que en el tercer round su rival fuese sacudido por una potente izquierda parte de un dos-uno. En el cuarto asalto el castigo de Cabrera con los golpes de poder continuó y en el quinto, tras dañar a Flores con una rápida combinación le golpeó con jabs y nuevos hooks zurdos para derribarlo por tercera vez.
A pesar de que conectaba más y mejores manos, Cabrera no poseía una gran frecuencia de golpeo, por lo que su oponente evitó continuar pasando críticos apuros. De hecho, aunque de haber estado más activo al ataque habría podido generar daños importantes y haber puesto las bases para un definitivo KOT, Cabrera permitió que Flores intentase reaccionar pasada la mitad, cuando éste lanzó ofensivas arrojando ganchos zurdos que tenían voluntad pero que no eran muy efectivos. En cualquier caso, con sus directos en breves combinaciones retrocediendo, sus jabs y escasos hooks de mano adelantada a Cabrera la bastó para mantener su ventaja ante un Flores sin recursos, dubitativo al ataque y que avanzó, como en su carrera, sin rumbo.
Hay ocasiones en las que un prospecto con gran rendimiento un día se encuentra con un obstáculo inesperadamente alto, que le causa serias dificultades y que quiebra su moral a largo plazo, generando crisis en una carrera que parecía prometer muchísimo más de lo que termina ofreciendo. Este parece ser el caso de Flores, ya que desde que perdió ante “Venado” López no queda ni rastro del muy hábil boxeador que había sido antes de este tropiezo.
Efectivamente, los fluidísimos, confiados y muy ágiles desplazamientos que había ofrecido anteriormente un Flores con un boxeo repleto de calidad en defensa y al contragolpe, ahora han desaparecido completamente, pareciendo incluso difícil de creer que sea el mismo púgil por su gravísima involución. Así, Flores, que todavía es muy joven, debe pensar en emprender un cambio drástico ya o podría naufragar de forma total.
En cuanto a Cabrera, seguramente de haberse medido a un boxeador con la moral alta, con un sólido plan ofensivo y que pudiese aprovechar sus descuidos defensivos, el choque habría sido muy diferente. Con todo, el púgil cumplió su cometido convincentemente y logró una victoria que podría acercarle a los rankings y que hacia finales de año será sucedida seguramente por una importante pelea para apoyar sus aspiraciones.

This was a crossroads bout between a boxer who was having decreasing effective performances and another one who was rising in direction to the top 15, and after it the tendencies of both fighters became reaffirmed. While the American Gabriel Flores Jr. 21(7KO)-2 was knocked down three times and was defeated by wide unanimous decision, lowering another step, his compatriot Giovanni Cabrera 21(7KO)-0 obtained the greatest victory of his career in his most significant opportunity to date. The scores were triple 98-89.
The negative impression that Flores generated in his performances against López and Montoya was even magnified against an undefeated, motivated and ambitious boxer like Cabrera. In general Flores situated himself in the center of the ring quite static, with a really simple boxing and with obvious defensive breaches.
With a few seconds elapsed, a straight left preceded by a right hook put on the mat Flores, who later was dropped again due to new left hands and right hooks. The end of the clash didn’t come then, but Cabrera continued to land his straight punches and lead hooks before his opponent was rocked in the third round by a powerful left hand part of a two-one combination. In the fourth round Cabrera’s attacks with power shots continued and in the fifth, after hurting Flores with a quick combination, he landed jabs and left hooks to knock down his rival for the third time.
Despite he landed more and better punches, Cabrera did not have a great punching rate, so Flores avoided suffering critical difficulties again. In fact, although if he had been more active on offense he could have generated significant damage and laid the groundwork for a definitive TKO, Cabrera allowed Flores to try to react past the half-point, when he attacked throwing left hooks that were not very effective. In any case, his straight shots in brief combinations going backwards, his jabs and few lead hooks were enough for Cabrera to maintain his advantage over Flores, who lacked tactical resources and hesitated on the attack.
There are times when a good prospect one day hits an unexpectedly high hurdle, which causes him serious difficulties and breaks his morale, creating a crisis in a career that seemed to promise so much more than it ends up delivering. This seems to be the case for Flores, who since his loss to “Venado” López has not even resembled the very skilled boxer that he was before this setback.
Indeed, the very smooth, confident and very agile movements that Flores had showed in the past with a boxing full of quality in defense and counterpunching, have now completely disappeared, seeming hard to believe that it is the same fighter. Thus, Flores, who is still very young, must think about undertaking a drastic change now or it will be too late.
As for Cabrera, surely if he had faced a boxer with high morale, with a solid offensive plan and who could take advantage of his defensive oversights, the clash would have been very different. All in all, the boxer fulfilled his mission convincingly and achieved a victory that could bring him closer to the rankings and that towards the end of the year will surely be followed by an important fight to support his aspirations.
