Después de destronar al eslabón débil de la cadena de monarcas Samuel Salva cayendo una vez a la lona y sacar sólo un empate por decisión técnica en su primera defensa, el entonces campeón IBF del peso mínimo Pedro Tadurán 14(11KO)-3-1 encaró en febrero de 2021 una puesta en juego ante René Mark “Mighty Mouse” Cuarto 19(11KO)-2-2 en la que debía mostrar que tenía regularidad para sustentar su reinado. Con todo, contrariamente Tadurán terminó siendo derrotado contra pronóstico por un púgil que entraba al combate con escasas opciones por su limitada cadencia y pegada.
Es justo señalar que Cuarto evolucionó muchísimo de cara a su primer mundial, y que el veredicto final del combate resultó controvertido, pensando muchos que realmente Tadurán mereció salir con el brazo en alto. De todos modos, un nuevo monarca fue entronizado y a Tadurán sólo le quedó esperar que se pactase una revancha que, lastrada por las restricciones gubernamentales, ha tardado casi un año en materializarse. Al fin, este domingo, en un pabellón en Digos City, Filipinas, los tagalos Tadurán y Cuarto volverán a verse las caras para cerrar su competencia.
Teniendo el precedente inmediato del choque entre ambos, lo lógico de cara a este duelo de desquite es recapitular qué sucedió en el primer cruce. En él, Tadurán presionó y tuvo en líneas generales un mayor volumen de golpeo, si bien hacia la mitad el dinamismo de Cuarto le hizo fallar bastantes manos, recurriendo este último finalmente a un excesivo conservadurismo que para los jueces fue suficiente para asegurarse el triunfo aunque no para la mayoría de los espectadores.
Por lo tanto, parece claro lo que necesita cada uno de ellos. Aunque el agresivo Tadurán se pudo ver sorprendido por una drástica mejora de su rival en cuanto a movilidad y técnica, evolución que ni siquiera parecía viable en las previsiones más optimistas, en esta ocasión ya sabe a lo que se enfrenta y deberá manejar su corte de ring de forma acorde a las circunstancias para llevar en más ocasiones a posiciones estáticas a su rival y castigarle. Asimismo no podrá volver a caer en el error de precipitar sus ataques si no encuentra ocasiones fáciles, necesitando apoyarse en un boxeo de presión paciente, metódico y ordenado.
Por otro lado, aunque Cuarto venció el choque precedente no debe contentarse con desplegar el mismo boxeo, especialmente no podrá confiar sólo en sus desplazamientos, sino que tendrá que acompañarlo de un ritmo de golpeo superior e intentar cargar más peso en sus contragolpes para explotar el avance de su contrincante. Y es que en el primer cruce pudo considerarse afortunado por llevarse la decisión y si vuelve a permitir que los golpes de poder de Tadurán sean las acciones más significativas sin dar una réplica consistente y regular esta vez podría no tener tanta suerte.
Sea como sea, esta interesante revancha seguramente resultará bastante contendida si no es que la pegada de Tadurán logra un punto de ruptura temprano. De todos modos, por mucho que el ganador logre una victoria abrumadora, no evitará ser valorado por debajo de los restantes campeones actuales de la división: Thammanoon Niyomtrong, Panya Pradabsri y Masataka Taniguchi.

After dethroning the weak link in the chain of champions in the division Samuel Salva despite of being knocked down once and drawing by technical decision in his first defense, the then IBF minimumweight titlist Pedro Tadurán 14(11KO)-3-1 faced René Mark «Mighty Mouse» Cuarto 19(11KO)-2-2 in February 2021, a match in which he had to show regularity to sustain his reign. However, on the contrary, Taduran ended up being defeated by upset against a boxer who entered the fight with few options of success due to his limited punch cadence and power.
It is fair to point out that Cuarto evolved a lot for this world championship, and that the final verdict of the fight was controversial, as many thought that Tadurán really deserved to come out with his arm raised. In any case, a new champion was enthroned and Tadurán had to wait for a possible rematch that, as a consecuence of the government restrictions, has taken almost a year to materialize. Finally, this Sunday, in an sports hall in Digos City, Philippines, Tadurán and Cuarto will meet again to close their competition.
As there is an immediate precedent of a bout between the two, the logical thing for this rematch is to recapitulate what happened in the first fight. In it, Tadurán pressed and generally had a greater volume of punches, although towards the middle the dynamism of Cuarto made him miss quite a few punches, and the latter finally resorted to an excessive lack of risks that for the judges was enough to ensure victory, although not for most viewers.
Therefore, it seems clear what each of them needs to do in the rematch. Although the aggressive Taduran was surprised by a drastic improvement in his rival in terms of mobility and technique, an evolution that did not even seem viable, on this occasion he already knows what he is facing and will have to cut the ring according to the circumstances to have more chances to put in static positions his rival and punish him. Also, he needs to avoid the mistake of precipitating his attacks if he does not find easy options, and to rely on a patient and methodical pressure boxing.
On the other hand, although Cuarto won the previous match, he should not display the same boxing, especially he shouln’t trust only in his movements, but will have to accompany them with a higher punch output and try to put more power in his counterattacks to exploit the advance of his opponent. In the first match he could consider himself lucky to achieve the decision of the judges and if he again allows Taduran’s power shots to be the most significant actions without giving a consistent and regular reply this time he might not be so lucky.
Be that as it may, this interesting rematch will surely prove quite disputed if Taduran’s power doesn’t create an early breaking point. However, it will not matter if the winner achieves an overwhelming triumph, since the champion will be considered bellow the level of the other current division champions: Thammanoon Niyomtrong, Panya Pradabsri and Masataka Taniguchi.
