El año 2021 vio la irrupción de una nueva alianza en Reino Unido entre Sky Sports y BOXXER, compañías que en este 2022 están dispuestas a seguir afianzando su posición conjunta y hacerla crecer en el panorama británico en lucha contra Matchroom Boxing y Queensberry Promotions. Para su campaña de esta temporada, BOXXER tiene planeados diversos interesantes eventos, el primero de los cuales llegará este sábado desde el Motorpoint Arena de Cardiff, Reino Unido.
¿Naufragio o revalorización?
Al principio se afirmó que al fanfarrón Chris Eubank Jr. 31(23KO)-2 se le debía dar tiempo para que encontrase su boxeo y madurase, algo que equivocadamente se dijo que sucedería tras su derrota ante Billy Joe Saunders. Posteriormente se afirmó que era cuestión de tiempo hasta que despuntase en la cumbre, si bien abundaron los combates ante rivales de tercera fila o ante púgiles venidos a menos antes de que fuese diseccionado por el jab de George Groves. Finalmente, más de siete años después de su tropiezo ante Saunders, nos encontramos en un punto en el que, a pesar de que algunos expertos aseguraron en su día que sería un futuro top libra por libra, Eubank no ha logrado ni un solo cinturón mundial absoluto e incluso algunos consideran que sólo busca ya una última gran bolsa antes del retiro.
En este sentido, el plan actual de Eubank pasa por repetir sin cesar el nombre de Golovkin, combate que recordemos que se podría haber pactado hace seis años, cuando “GGG” estaba imparable, si el púgil británico entonces no hubiese decidido a última hora negarse a firmar los acordados términos del contrato.
En fin, dado que los únicos duelos relevantes de su carrera han sido ante Saunders, Groves y tres boxeadores en las últimas de su trayectoria como Arthur Abraham, Daniel DeGale y Matt Korobov, sin duda Eubank afrontará este sábado uno de los encuentros de más calibre de su trayectoria, en el que se decidirá si definitivamente naufraga o se revaloriza de forma importante. Y es que su oponente será el pegador, exretador mundial y extitular de Reino Unido del peso medio, Liam “The Machine” Williams 23(18KO)-3(1)-1, que en su última subida al ring vio cortada una racha de siete triunfos antes del límite al ser derrotado por un Demetrius Andrade al que, eso sí, consiguió dejar seriamente tocado en una ocasión.
Ciertamente, Williams es un boxeador muy peligroso y agresivo, fuerte físicamente, con un poderoso directo de mano adelantada y que, además de estar deseoso de volver a la senda del triunfo, quiere aprovechar esta oportunidad de oro ante su público para reengancharse a la parte más alta de las listas. Por ello, Eubank tendrá ante él una verdadera prueba de fuego a las supuestas mejoras en su boxeo. Y es que, como mostró un entonces inspirado Andrade, al bravo Williams se le puede derrotar a base de dinamismo, reflejos y boxeo al contragolpe, precisamente las facetas que Eubank afirma haber mejorado de la mano de su entrenador Roy Jones Jr.
Si es cierto lo que dice y efectivamente ha dado mucha profundidad y técnica a su nuevo estilo móvil (algo cuestionable), Eubank debería poder usar su ventaja en explosividad para aprovechar con sus uppercuts y ganchos el frontal avance de Williams. Sin embargo, hasta ahora ha dado la sensación de que Eubank no ha comprendido bien los conceptos básicos del boxeo dinámico, retrocediendo en momentos innecesarios (como cuando está desbordando al ataque), dudando en la distancia larga, usando mal el jab y poniéndose en situaciones incómodas por sí solo. Así, si vuelve a repetir ese tipo de desajustes y Williams tiene la oportunidad de presionar con intensidad a su adversario o de encerrarlo, los golpes de poder de “The Machine” serían capaces de causar estragos en Eubank amenazando con poner fin a sus últimas pretensiones.
Shields, Wallin y Jenkins en el respaldo
En el semifondo se producirá un mundial por las coronas unificadas WBA-WBC-IBF del peso medio femenino entre la hábil estadounidense Claressa “T-Rex” Shields 11(2KO)-0 y la invicta eslovena Ema Kozin 21(11KO)-0-1, pelea pensada para dar un rodaje a la primera de ambas antes de un campeonato por el título indiscutido de la categoría en la segunda mitad del año contra Savannah Marshall. Dado que Kozin es una boxeadora técnicamente inferior y que a duras penas pudo sacar una victoria por la mínima como local ante Maria Lindberg (a la que Marshall destruyó en tres asaltos), otra cosa que no sea una victoria de Shields sobre la eslovena sería una de las sorpresas del año en el boxeo femenino actual.
También destaca en la velada la participación del peso pesado sueco Otto Wallin 22(14KO)-1, 13º WBC que se hizo famoso por el grave corte por puño que provocó a Tyson Fury y que hace unos meses se quedó sin su programado combate contra Dillian Whyte tras una cuestionada baja del británico-jamaicano. Sea como sea, mientras aguarda un nuevo combate en la cumbre de la división, Wallin combatirá en un rodaje contra el fogueadísimo púgil, de récord engañoso, Kamil Sokolowski 11(4KO)-24(3)-2, que el año pasado perdió de forma muy controvertida contra el prospecto David Adeleye.
Además, de estos y otros duelos, la velada se completará con un campeonato de Inglaterra del peso wélter en el que el titular Samuel “True Sensation” Antwi 13(6KO)-1(1) intentará volver brillar enfrentándose al invicto retador Conah Walker 10(3KO)-0-1 y con un pretendido retorno a la senda del triunfo del excampeón británico wélter Chris Jenkins 22(8KO)-4(1)-3, que se medirá al extitular mundial convertido en piedra de toque Julius Indongo 23(12KO)-4(4).
Esta velada será emitida en España por Proximia desde las 20:30 del sábado, mientras que en Reino Unido la televisará Sky Sports Main Event desde las 19:30 en hora local, las 14:30 ET/11:00 PT.

The year 2021 saw the emergence of a new alliance in the United Kingdom between Sky Sports and BOXXER, companies that in 2022 are willing to continue strengthening their position and make it grow on the British scene against Matchroom Boxing and Queensberry Promotions. For its campaign in the present season, BOXXER has a number of interesting events planned, the first of which will be this Saturday on the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, UK.
Shipwreck or revaluation?
Initially it was stated that Chris Eubank Jr. 31 (23KO)-2 only needed time to find his boxing and mature, something that was said would happen after his loss to Billy Joe Saunders. Later it was stated that it was a matter of time until he reached the top, although then he had plenty of fights against low level boxers, or against others in bad shape, before he was dissected by George Groves’s jab. Finally, more than seven years after his defeat against Saunders, we are at a point where Eubank has yet to win a single world belt and some even consider that he is only looking for one last big purse before retirement.
In this sense, Eubank’s current plan consists in endlessly repeating Golovkin’s name, a fight that could have taken place six years ago, when «GGG» was unstoppable, if the British boxer had not decided at the last minute to refuse the signing of the agreed terms of the contract.
In short, as the only relevant duels of his career have been against Saunders, Groves and three boxers in the last phase of their careers such as Arthur Abraham, Daniel DeGale and Matt Korobov, Eubank will undoubtedly face this Saturday one of his most standing out matches, in which it will be decided if his career definitively shipwrecked or if it is revalued significantly. His opponent will be the puncher, former world challenger and former United Kingdom middleweight titleholder, Liam «The Machine» Williams 23(18KO)-3(1)-1, who in his last bout was defeated by a Demetrius Andrade to whom he clearly hurt in one ocassion.
Certainly, Williams is a very dangerous and aggressive boxer, physically strong, with a powerful jab and who, in addition to being eager to return to the path of victory, wants to take advantage of this opportunity in front of his public to rejoin the top of the rankings. For this reason, Eubank will have a very hard test to his supposed improvements. As a then-inspired Andrade showed, the brave Williams can be defeated using dynamism, reflexes and counter-attack boxing, the aspects that Eubank claims to have improved at the hands of his trainer Roy Jones Jr.
If what he says is true and he has indeed given a lot of depth and technique to his new style (somewhat questionable), Eubank should be able to use his explosiveness to take advantage of Williams’s frontal advance with his uppercuts and hooks. However, so far it has seemed that Eubank has misunderstood the basics of dynamic boxing, backing off at unnecessary moments (such as when he is overwhelming in an attack), hesitating at long range, misusing the jab and putting himself in uncomfortable situations. Thus, if he repeats this mistakes and Williams has the opportunity to intensely pressure his opponent or put him against the ropes, «The Machine» power punches could be capable of causing serious damages on Eubank, threatening to put a definitive lid on his objectives.
Shields, Wallin and Jenkins in the support
In the undercard there will be a world championship for the unified WBA-WBC-IBF female middleweight belts between the skilled American Claressa “T-Rex” Shields 11(2KO)-0 and the undefeated Slovenian Ema Kozin 21(11KO)-0-1, a tune-up fight for Shields before a fight for the undisputed title of the category in the second half of the year against Savannah Marshall. As Kozin is a technically inferior boxer and was barely able to pull off a narrow win at home against Maria Lindberg (whom Marshall destroyed in three rounds), anything other than a win of Shields over the Slovenian would be one of the surprises of the year in women’s boxing.
In the card also stands out the participation of Swedish heavyweight Otto Wallin 22(14KO)-1, 13th WBC who became known for the cut he caused to Tyson Fury and who a few months ago was left without his scheduled fight against Dillian Whyte after a questionable injury of the British-Jamaican. Be that as it may, while awaiting a new fight at the top of the division, Wallin will have a tune-up against the very tough Kamil Sokolowski 11(4KO)-24(3)-2, who last year lost a highly controversial decision against prospect David Adeleye.
In addition to these and other duels, the evening will be completed with an English welterweight championship in which the title holder Samuel “True Sensation” Antwi 13(6KO)-1(1) will try to shine again facing undefeated challenger Conah Walker 10 (3KO)-0-1 and with an intended return to the winning path of former British welterweight champion Chris Jenkins 22(8KO)-4(1)-3, who will face former world titleholder Julius Indongo 23( 12KO)-4(4).
This evening will be broadcasted in the UK by Sky Sports Main Event this Saturday from 19:30 local time, 14:30 ET/11:00 PT.
