Wardley evitó derrota a los puntos asegurada noqueando a Huni

Asalto tras asalto, el australiano Justis Huni 12(7KO)-1(1) se mostró superior al británico Fabio Wardley 19(18KO)-0, teniendo la victoria a los puntos asegurada alcanzado el décimo round: las cartulinas de los jueces eran 82-89, 82-89 y 83-88 a favor de Huni, siendo la de Bastión Boxeo también 82-89. Sin embargo, mostrando que en el boxeo una acción aislada puede cambiar no sólo un combate sino también la dirección de una carrera, Wardley conectó una mano decisiva en el décimo round con la que logró el triunfo por knockout.
Más allá de algún éxito puntual con directos a la contra y alguna otra mano en intercambios igualados, en general Wardley fue controlado por Huni, que usó su velocidad de manos y su destreza para llegar con jabs, directos diestros y ganchos arriba y abajo que acompañaba a menudo de buenas acciones defensivas esquivando, bloqueando y desviando. Pudo parecer que el ritmo de Huni, acompañado de su estilo botando, podría cansarlo pero éste continuó imponiendo su boxeo desde la distancia media y encerrando a Wardley contra las cuerdas frequentemente antes de descargar poderosos curvos.
Alcanzado el séptimo round, Wardley parecía desgastado, si bien tuvo el mérito de saber lidiar con los malos momentos sin desbordarse y buscando su derecha a la contra, que no llegó de forma crucial hasta el décimo episodio. Tras un noveno round en el que Wardley fue alcanzado por ganchos muy claros y peligrosos, en el décimo impactó el directo que había estado esperando, con el cual sorprendió a Huni y lo derribó aparatosamente. El visitante se levantó tarde en la cuenta del árbitro, logrando Wardley certificar su remontada.
El triunfo permite a Wardley seguir adelante con sus objetivos, expandir su fama de pegador y mantenerse como número 1 del ranking WBA. Sin embargo, la inferioridad táctica mostrada durante casi diez asaltos ante Huni (que pese a la derrota ha visto su prestigio aumentado) resulta una evidente señal de alarma de cara a los ambiciosos planes que él y su promotor tienen. De todos modos, si no es que se pacta una revancha ante Huni clamada por muchos fans, es posible que Wardley, ahora titular interino WBA del peso pesado, persiga al veteranísimo Kubrat Pulev, titular regular WBA ante el que debería tener una pelea mucho menos exigente.

Round after round, Australian Justis Huni 12(7KO)-1(1) outworked and outclassed British Fabio Wardley 19(18KO)-0, securing a points victory by the tenth round: the judges’ cards were 82-89, 82-89, and 83-88 in favor of Huni, Bastion Boxing also scoring it 82-89. However, showing that in boxing a single action can change not only a fight but also the direction of a career, Wardley landed a decisive punch in the tenth round to obtain a knockout victory.
Aside from some occasional success with counter right hands and a few other punches in even exchanges, Wardley was generally dominated by Huni, who used his hand speed and skill to land jabs, right hands and hooks up and down often accompanied by good defensive moves, dodging, blocking, and parrying. It might have seemed that Huni’s pace, coupled with his bouncing style, might tire him out, but he continued to impose his boxing from mid-range and frequently pinned Wardley against the ropes before unleashing powerful hooks.
By the seventh round, Wardley seemed worn out, although he had the merit of dealing with the difficult moments without allowing himself to be overwhelmed and looking for his counter right hand, which didn’t land crucially until the tenth round. After a ninth round in which Wardley was hit by very clear and dangerous hooks, in the tenth he connected the straight punch he had been waiting for, with which he surprised Huni and spectacularly knocked him down. The visitor got up late in the referee’s count, so Wardley sealed his comeback.
The win allows Wardley to move forward with his goals, expand his reputation as a puncher and maintain his position as the number 1 heavyweight in the WBA list. However, the tactical inferiority displayed for nearly ten rounds against Huni (whose reputation has increased despite the defeat) is a clear warning sign, especially taking into account the ambitious plans he and his promoter have. In any case, unless a rematch against Huni, as many fans are clamoring for, is agreed, it’s possible that Wardley, now interim WBA heavyweight titleholder, will pursue a match against the veteran Kubrat Pulev, regular WBA titleholder against whom he should have a much less demanding fight.
