Resumen de los cuartos de final del WBC Grand Prix: peso pesado y medio

El pasado miércoles, en el Kingdom Arena de Riyadh, Arabia Saudí, se produjeron los cuartos de final del torneo WBC Grand Prix en sus cuatro categorías de peso. A continuación presentamos un resumen de lo sucedido en las ramas del peso pesado y del peso medio.
Peso pesado
Con un KOT en el primer asalto, el sudafricano Keaton Gomes 13(11KO)-3(1) arrolló al estadounidense Devon Young 9(7KO)-1(1). Desde el inicio, Gomes impactó nítidos y peligrosísimos cruzados diestros, uno de los cuales dañó gravemente a su rival. Young no se tenía casi en pie, pero fue golpeado prolongadamente antes de que el árbitro parase demasiado tarde el roto combate.
En cuanto al choque entre el polaco Piotr Lacz 14(10KO)-0-1 y el argentino Kevin Cristopher Ramírez 10(4KO)-0-2, la pelea terminó en empate (57-57, 56-58, 58-56). También dio un resultado de empate el “sistema de puntuación mejorado WBC”, decidiendo un panel ejecutivo del WBC que el ganador debía ser Ramírez. Bastión Boxeo puntuó la pugna 56-58 para Ramírez.
Aunque Lacz sostuvo una presión constante y llegó con buenos cruzados diestros en una pugna por lo general contendida, Ramírez fue más efectivo de manera sostenida con su manejo de los hooks y los uppercuts de espaldas a las cuerdas.
También pasó a semifinales el bosnio Ahmed Krnjić 6(4KO)-0, que derrotó por decisión mayoritaria (58-56, 58-56, 57-57) al ucraniano Tsotne Rogava 12(8KO)-1. Bastión Boxeo: 56-58 Rogava.
Durante la primera mitad, Rogava simplemente desplegó un eficaz boxeo, desplazándose y variando las trayectoria de golpeo. Pero, como le sucedió en octavos, Rogava se vio lastrado por su mal estado de forma y su sobrepeso, cansándose en la segunda mitad y permitiendo que Krnjić le desgastase aún más usando sus golpes de poder en hook.
Finalmente en cuanto al peso pesado, el estadounidense Dante Stone 21(13KO)-1 se hizo con un merecido triunfo unánime (59-55, 58-56, 58-56) contra el marroquí Youness Balla 2(2KO)-2. Bastión Boxeo: 58-56 Stone. El estadounidense usó sus desplazamientos y su jab, junto a algunos abiertos cruzados y directos para controlar la mayor parte del tiempo a un Balla frontal, previsible y que sólo logró acortar la diferencia con puntuales embestidas decididas a las que no dio continuidad.
Así, las semifinales ofrecerán los choques Gomes vs. Krnjić y Ramírez vs. Stone.
Peso medio
Al igual que en octavos, el canadiense Derek Pomerleau 14(11KO)-0 volvió a hacerse con un triunfo antes del límite, en esta ocasión por KOT en el segundo round sobre el ucraniano Dmytro Rybalko 5(2KO)-1(1)-1. Este último tuvo un buen primer round, pero en el segundo tuvo un descuido, fue sorprendido por un fuerte y certero directo de izquierda del zurdo Pomerleau y recibió ganchos y rectos hasta terminar sin posibilidad de continuar.
Por otro lado, el australiano Dylan Biggs 16(9KO)-1(1) se hizo con un cuestionable triunfo por decisión unánime (59-54, 58-55 y 57-56) ante el ucraniano Petro Frolov 12(4KO)-2. Bastión Boxeo: 56-57 Frolov. Aunque es cierto que los puños de Biggs parecieron más sólidos, en general dio la sensación de que la cadencia de golpeo y la constancia de Frolov habían sido suficientes para darle la victoria a éste, incluso a pesar de que padeció un knockdown en el quinto asalto por un gancho zurdo a la sien acompañado de un posterior directo bloqueado.
En un enfrentamiento con predominancia de los ataques sobre las defensas, el francés Ephrem Bariko 12(6KO)-1 fue derrotado por el colombiano Carlos Sinisterra 13(10KO)-1 con un KO en el tercer round. En los primeros dos rounds, Bariko presionó bien contra las cuerdas a Sinisterra y le alcanzó con un apreciable número de ganchos. Sin embargo, en el tercer asalto Sinisterra dañó a su contrincante con un cruzado diestro y le golpeó prolongadamente con hooks hasta desplomarlo en la lona.
Finalmente, el combate entre el mexicano Emiliano Aguillón 13(7KO)-0-2 y el francés Lancelot Proton de la Chapelle 17(5KO)-1(1)-2 terminó en empate (tres 57-57). “El sistema de puntuación mejorado WBC” también llevó a un empate, y fue el panel ejecutivo WBC el que le dio el triunfo en el torneo a De la Chapelle. Bastión Boxeo: 58-56 De la Chapelle.
Aguillón realizó alguna buena acción a la contra, pero fue demasiado expectante y dio demasiado tiempo y espacio a De la Chapelle, que a base de persistencia y precisión con sus rectos le superó.
En las semifinales del peso medio se verán las caras, por un lado, los pegadores Pomerleau y Sinisterra y, por el otro, Biggs y De la Chapelle.
WBC Grand Prix quarterfinals: heavyweight and middleweight recap

Last Wednesday, at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the quarterfinals of the WBC Grand Prix tournament took place across its four weight classes. Below is a summary of what happened in the heavyweight and middleweight divisions.
Heavyweight
With a TKO in the first round, South African Keaton Gomes 13(11KO)-3(1) steamrolled American Devon Young 9(7KO)-1(1). From the outset, Gomes landed clean and dangerous right hooks, one of which seriously hurt his opponent. Young was barely able to stand, but was hit repeatedly before the referee stopped the one-sided bout far too late.
As for the clash between Polish Piotr Lacz 14(10KO)-0-1 and Argentine Kevin Cristopher Ramírez 10(4KO)-0-2, the fight ended in a draw (57-57, 56-58, 58-56). The “WBC enhanced scoring system” also resulted in a draw, leading the WBC executive panel to decide that the winner should be Ramírez. Bastion Boxing scored the bout 56-58 for Ramírez.
Although Lacz maintained constant pressure and landed good right hooks in a generally competitive fight, Ramírez was more consistently effective with his use of hooks and uppercuts while backed against the ropes.
Also advancing to the semifinals was Bosnian Ahmed Krnjić 6(4KO)-0, who defeated Ukrainian Tsotne Rogava 12(8KO)-1 by majority decision (58-56, 58-56, 57-57). Bastion Boxing: 56-58 Rogava.
During the first half, Rogava simply displayed effective boxing, moving and varying his punch angles. But, as happened in the round of 16, Rogava was hampered by poor conditioning and excess weight, tiring in the second half and allowing Krnjić to wear him down further with his power punches in hook.
Finally, as for the heavyweight division, American Dante Stone 21(13KO)-1 earned a well-deserved unanimous decision win (59-55, 58-56, 58-56) against Moroccan Youness Balla 2(2KO)-2. Bastion Boxing: 58-56 Stone. The American relied on his movement and jab, along with wide hooks and straight punches, to control most of the fight against a frontal, predictable Balla, who only managed to close the gap with sporadic, determined charges that lacked follow-up.
Thus, the semifinals will feature the matchups Gomes vs. Krnjić and Ramírez vs. Stone.
Middleweight
As in the round of 16, Canadian Derek Pomerleau 14(11KO)-0 once again secured a win inside the distance, this time by TKO in the second round over Ukrainian Dmytro Rybalko 5(2KO)-1(1)-1. The latter had a good first round, but in the second he made a mistake, was caught by a strong and accurate left straight from the southpaw Pomerleau, and received hooks and straight shots until he was unable to continue.
Meanwhile, Australian Dylan Biggs 16(9KO)-1(1) earned a questionable unanimous decision win (59-54, 58-55, and 57-56) over Ukrainian Petro Frolov 12(4KO)-2. Bastion Boxing: 56-57 Frolov. While Biggs’s shots did seem heavier, overall it felt like Frolov’s punch output and consistency were enough to give him the win, even though he suffered a knockdown in the fifth round from a left hook to the temple followed by a blocked straight hand.
In a bout where offense prevailed over defense, Frenchman Ephrem Bariko 12(6KO)-1 was defeated by Colombian Carlos Sinisterra 13(10KO)-1 with a third-round KO. In the first two rounds, Bariko pressured well against the ropes and landed a notable number of hooks. However, in the third round Sinisterra hurt his opponent with a right hook and hit him repeatedly with power punches until Bariko was dropped to the canvas.
Finally, the fight between Mexican Emiliano Aguillón 13(7KO)-0-2 and Frenchman Lancelot Proton de la Chapelle 17(5KO)-1(1)-2 ended in a draw (three 57-57 scorecards). The “WBC enhanced scoring system” also resulted in a draw, and the WBC executive panel awarded the win in the tournament to De la Chapelle. Bastion Boxing: 58-56 De la Chapelle.
Aguillón executed some good counters, but was too passive and gave too much time and space to De la Chapelle, who outworked him with persistence and precision using straight punches.
