Moussa Gholam batió en seis rounds a Maximiliano Verón

La pasada noche, en el Teatro Las Vegas de Madrid, España, el peso superpluma marroquí Moussa Gholam 24(15KO)-1 disputó su quinto combate (su segundo del año) desde su controvertida derrota ante Elnur Samedov, actualmente número 1 del ranking WBA. Gholam se midió al joven argentino Maximiliano Jesús Verón 11(4KO)-2(1), que en este mayor reto de su carrera y primera pelea como visitante hizo todo lo que pudo pero no pudo evitar ser vencido por KOT en el sexto asalto.
Consciente del peligro de su oponente, Verón intentó desplazarse por el ring evitando intercambios, lanzando jabs y cortas combinaciones cuando su rival se acercaba, si bien estos golpes fueron bloqueados. Además, el jab de Gholam fue mucho más sólido y lo conectó de forma repetida antes de que, ya en el segundo asalto, acelerase sus pasos y dañase al argentino con un gancho zurdo a la cabeza, siendo derribado Verón tras unos curvos más. De todos modos, tirando el bucal, agarrándose y lanzando golpes con intención disuasoria, Verón resistió el asalto.
En el tercer round, Verón tuvo su mejor asalto, aprovechando que Gholam intentó no precipitarse para alcanzarlo con algunas buenas combinaciones arriba y abajo, pero para el cuarto el favorito volvió a la carga y le castigó duramente con uppercuts diestros, ganchos al cuerpo y hooks de mano adelantada, terminando el visitante el asalto al borde de la detención. En el quinto episodio, en el que a Verón se le descontó un punto por perder por enésima vez su protector bucal, éste realizó un meritorio esfuerzo, llegando incluso a intercambiar brevemente en el centro del ring buscando reducir la presión, si bien la pegada de Gholam siguió marcando la diferencia. Hasta tal punto que en el sexto asalto, tras dos derechazos que dañaron otra vez a Verón, se paró el combate y se le dio el triunfo a Gholam.
Con la victoria, Gholam capturó un cinturón menor WBA que le debería permitir escalar algunos peldaños desde su posición de 10º. De todos modos, al margen de cuál sea su ranking, Gholam necesita ya una pelea crucial ante un oponente de nivel alto. Y es que está en los mejores años de su carrera, nunca se sabe cuándo podría empezar un declive de rendimiento y no puede seguir perdiendo el tiempo con peleas en las que se sabe con certeza que va vencer abrumadoramente y que no le van a dar grandes réditos de ningún tipo.

Last night, at Teatro Las Vegas in Madrid, Spain, Moroccan super featherweight Moussa Gholam 24(15KO)-1 stepped into the ring for his fifth fight (his second this year) since his controversial loss to Elnur Samedov, currently the WBA’s top-ranked fighter. Gholam faced the young Argentine Maximiliano Jesús Verón 11(4 KO)-2(1), who, in the biggest challenge of his career and his first bout abroad, did everything he could but was ultimately defeated by TKO in the sixth round.
Aware of his opponent’s danger, Verón tried to move around the ring to avoid exchanges, throwing jabs and short combinations when Gholam came close, although these punches were blocked. Gholam’s jab was much powerful and repeatedly found its mark until, in the second round, he picked up the pace and hurt Verón with a left hook to the head, knocking him down after some more hooks. Nevertheless, Verón endured the round—spitting out his mouthguard, clinching, and throwing punches trying to keep Gholam at bay.
In the third, Verón had his best moment, capitalizing on Gholam’s cautious approach then and landing combinations to the head and body. But in the fourth, the favorite resumed his assault, punishing Verón with right uppercuts, hooks downstairs, and lead-hand shots, leaving the visitor barely standing by the round’s end. In the fifth, Verón had a point deducted for repeatedly losing his mouthguard, yet he made a spirited effort—briefly exchanging blows in the center of the ring to relieve pressure—although Gholam’s power continued to be decisive. So much so that in the sixth round, after two hard rights that hurt Verón again, the fight was stopped.
With the win, Gholam claimed a minor WBA title, which should help him climb a few spots from his current No. 10 ranking. However, regardless of his placement on the list, Gholam now urgently needs a major bout against a high-level opponent. He’s in the prime years of his career, and since it’s impossible to predict when performance may start to decline, he can’t keep wasting time on fights he’s expected to win decisively and which offer few benefits.
