Puede que el británico Hamzah Sheeraz 22(18KO)-0-1 no estuviese en su mejor momento tras su controvertido empate ante Carlos Adames, pero el estadounidense Edgar Berlanga 23(18KO)-2(1) hace mucho tiempo que va a la deriva. De hecho, desde que acabó su famosa racha de knockouts en el primer asalto, Berlanga fue yendo de mal en peor a pesar de que sus victorias ante Qugiley y McCrory y su derrota solo por decisión ante Canelo crearon un cierto espejismo a ojos de muchos.
Pues bien, todos y cada uno de los numerosos puntos débiles de Berlanga, fácilmente intuibles durante su carrera, terminaron siendo explotados al mismo tiempo anoche por el primer boxeador con ambiciones, joven y con pegada al que se ha enfrentado en su trayectoria. Y es que Sheeraz debutó en el peso supermedio destruyéndolo en cinco asaltos en una eliminatoria WBC que, en teoría, le ha colocado por detrás del titular interino Mbilli en el acceso a la pelea por el cinturón mundial.
Con ambos boxeadores situados próximos al centro del ring y en la distancia media-larga, durante los primeros asaltos ambos hicieron pruebas con sus jabs, sus directos y algún hook, pero poco a poco fue Sheeraz quien empezó a encontrar más huecos para sus golpes de poder. Entre ellos destacó un duro uppercut diestro que Berlanga se mostró completamente incapaz de defender. Desde que el británico tuvo éxito con sus curvos, las cosas se precipitaron: el desgaste de Berlanga se acumuló rápido, Sheeraz acentuó su acierto y agresividad y para el cuarto asalto la pelea se rompió completamente.
Entonces Sheeraz conectó una brutal combinación de hooks a la cabeza que desplomaron a Berlanga, siendo evidente que éste no iba a poder aguantar muchos más golpes a pesar de ponerse de pie. De hecho, en la reanudación una nueva serie de curvos nuevamente le pusieron en el tapiz. Lo ideal para la salud del boxeador habría sido que se parase entonces la pelea, aunque seguramente habría aprovechado ese hecho para afirmar que se había parado prematuramente. No tuvo ocasión de señalar tal cosa, puesto que el combate continuó, llegó al quinto asalto y entonces Sheeraz le hizo tocar otra vez la lona usando su derecha recta y su gancho de izquierda, forzando así la detención arbitral.

British fighter Hamzah Sheeraz 22(18KO)-0-1 may not have been at his best following his controversial draw against Carlos Adames, but American Edgar Berlanga 23(18KO)-2(1) has been drifting for quite some time. In fact, ever since his famous streak of first-round knockouts ended, Berlanga has gone from bad to worse, even though his wins over Quigley and McCrory and his decision loss to Canelo created a certain illusion for many.
Well, each and every one of Berlanga’s many weaknesses — easily perceptible throughout his career — ended up being exploited all at once last night by the first ambitious, young, hard-hitting boxer he has ever faced. Sheeraz made his debut at super middleweight by destroying him in five rounds in a WBC eliminator that, in theory, places him behind interim champion Mbilli in the race for the world title shot.
With both fighters positioned near the center of the ring and at mid-to-long range, during the first rounds they tested with their jabs, straight hands, and a few hooks, but little by little it was Sheeraz who began finding more openings for his power punches. Among them stood out a hard right uppercut that Berlanga was completely unable to defend against. From the moment the British fighter found success with his power shots, things quickly escalated: Berlanga’s faded rapidly, Sheeraz increased his success and aggression, and by the fourth round the fight had completely broken down.
Then Sheeraz landed a brutal combination of hooks to the head that sent Berlanga crashing down, making it clear he wouldn’t be able to take much more punishment despite getting back to his feet. In fact, after the restart, another flurry of hooks put him back on the canvas. Ideally, for the boxer’s health, the fight should have been stopped right then, although Berlanga would likely have used it to claim the stoppage was premature. He didn’t get the chance to say so, because the fight continued, reached the fifth round, and Sheeraz made him touch the canvas again with a straight right and a left hook, forcing the referee to stop the fight.
