Es posible que la acumulación de castigo del veterano excampeón mundial Tevin Farmer 33(8KO)-9(3)-1 le pasase factura, o que se viese afectado por el clásico golpe en frío al principio del combate del que es difícil recuperarse si se está ante un púgil contundente, pero el hecho es que anoche fue barrido. Y es que el prospecto del peso ligero Floyd Schofield 19(13KO)-0 sólo necesitó un minuto y dieciocho segundos para derribarlo dos veces y derrotarlo, pasando así de forma brillante su mayor test hasta la fecha y asestándole a Farmer su primera derrota antes del límite desde 2012.
Con unos 30 segundos transcurridos, Schofield impactó un duro gancho diestro que puso en el tapiz al zurdo Farmer. Éste se levantó pero, aunque se intentó agarrar durante el nuevo ataque de su rival en la reanudación, fue llevado a la lona de nuevo por una combinación de hooks terminada con un gancho de izquierda a la cabeza. Finalmente, después de la cuenta, unos cuantos curvos más conectados por Schofield convencieron al árbitro de la necesidad de parar el enfrentamiento.
En el momento en el que más lo necesitaba, especialmente tras el knockdown padecido en su último combate, Schofield logró un excelente triunfo ante un boxeador que llegaba de ofrecer buenas actuaciones ante Muratalla y Zepeda, lo que le permitirá encarar con la moral muy alta su persecución de una pelea mundialista. Hay que recordar que Schofield es 2º WBA por detrás del citado Zepeda, que accederá al mundial WBC contra Stevenson en un par de semanas, lo que, de facto, le sitúa como el boxeador mejor posicionado para retar al campeón de la Asociación, el estadounidense Gervonta Davis.

It’s possible that the accumulation of punishment over the years finally caught up with veteran former world champion Tevin Farmer 33(8KO)-9(3)-1, or that he just got caught cold early in the bout, kind of shot from which it’s hard to recover—especially against a good puncher. But the fact is last night he was swept away. Lightweight prospect Floyd Schofield 19(13KO)-0 needed just one minute and eighteen seconds to drop him twice and secure the win, brilliantly passing the biggest test of his career so far and handing Farmer his first stoppage loss since 2012.
About 30 seconds in, Schofield landed a hard right hook that floored the southpaw Farmer. Although he beat the count, and tried to clinch during his opponent’s attack after the restart, he was sent to the canvas again by a combination of hooks, ending with a left hook to the head. Finally, after the second count, a few more clean hooks from Schofield convinced the referee to step in and wave the fight off.
At a moment when he needed it most—especially after suffering a knockdown in his previous bout—Schofield came through with an outstanding victory over a boxer who had strong performances against Muratalla and Zepeda. This win will give him a big boost in confidence as he continues his pursuit of a world title shot. It’s worth noting that Schofield is ranked #2 by the WBA, just behind Zepeda, who will challenge Stevenson for the WBC title in a couple of weeks. That, in practice, makes Schofield the best positioned fighter to challenge the Association’s champion, American Gervonta Davis.
