Canelo Álvarez no es precisamente el tipo de boxeador que siempre ha buscado el mayor reto posible, algo que se ha recrudecido en esta última fase de su carrera, en la que, consciente de que se acerca el final, se ha medido a púgiles como el inactivo superwélter Jermell Charlo, un Edgar Berlanga que había pasado por una grave crisis o un William Scull que se coronó con un robo y que no merecía ser campeón, como demostró sobre el ring ante el mexicano. Eso por no hablar de su próximo choque en el peso supermedio ante un Crawford tres años mayor que él, que en su penúltimo choque era peso wélter y que en su debut en el peso superwélter a duras penas logró un controvertido triunfo ante Madrimov.
Dicho esto, y pudiendo estar su retiro cerca, parece improbable que Canelo vaya a aceptar medirse a un aspirante de élite del peso supermedio, además de un pegador peligrosísimo, como el fuerte Christian Mbilli 29(24KO)-0. Sea como sea, Mbilli hizo su parte para situarse al alcance de una pelea contra Canelo, o al menos al alcance del título WBC del peso supermedio, capturando el cinturón interino en una eliminatoria contra el veterano Maciej Sulecki 33(13KO)-4(2), al que anoche derrotó en un round en el Centre Videotron de Ciudad de Quebec, Canadá.
Aunque Diego Pacheco necesitó seis rounds para vencer a Sulecki, dos minutos después del comienzo del combate, y tras cruzar unos cuantos jabs y alguna derecha con su rival, Mbilli conectó un par de golpes al cuerpo sucedidos por un duro uppercut diestro que arrojó sobre el tapiz a su contrincante. Sulecki se levantó con dificultad y el árbitro consideró que no estaba en condiciones para continuar.
En la última actualización del ranking WBC, Jermall Charlo es el boxeador mejor clasificado detrás de Mbilli, por lo que, si tras el Canelo-Crawford los cuatro cinturones quedasen vacantes por retiro del vencedor, el nuevo titular interino se convertiría en campeón de pleno derecho y tendría que defender ante Charlo.

Canelo Álvarez has never exactly been the kind of fighter who consistently seeks out the toughest challenges—and that trend has only sharpened in this final stage of his career. Aware that the end is near, he’s chosen opponents like the inactive super welterweight Jermell Charlo, Edgar Berlanga (who was coming off a serious slump), or William Scull, who captured a title in a controversial decision and showed in the ring against the Mexican that he didn’t deserve to be champion. And that’s not even mentioning his upcoming super middleweight bout with Terence Crawford, who is three years older, who fought at welterweight in his penultimate bout, and who barely scraped by in his super welter debut with a controversial win over Madrimov.
That said, and with retirement possibly looming, it seems unlikely that Canelo will agree to face an elite super middleweight contender—especially one as dangerous as the hard-hitting Christian Mbilli, now 29-0 with 24 KOs. Nevertheless, Mbilli did his part to move within reach of a shot at Canelo—or at least at the WBC super middleweight title—by capturing the interim belt in an eliminator against veteran Maciej Sulecki 33(13KO)-4(2), whom he stopped in just one round last night at Centre Videotron in Quebec City, Canada.
While Diego Pacheco needed six rounds to beat Sulecki, Mbilli needed only two minutes. After trading a few jabs and rights with his opponent, he landed a pair of body shots followed by a crushing right uppercut that dropped Sulecki to the canvas. The veteran rose with difficulty, and the referee judged he was unfit to continue.
In the latest WBC rankings, Jermall Charlo sits just behind Mbilli. So, if all four belts were to become vacant should the winner of Canelo-Crawford choose to retire, the interim titlist would be upgraded to full champion and would be required to defend against Charlo.
