Wilson venció controvertidamente a Giménez, que reclama revancha a la WBO

En el respaldo del choque Liam Paro vs. Jonathan Navarro, que se produjo ayer en el Convention Centre de Cairns, Australia, tuvo lugar un interesante duelo del peso superpluma entre el exretador mundial australiano Liam Wilson 16(8KO)-3(3) y el excampeón de Argentina, y titular de Sudamérica, Ayrton Osmar Giménez 22(4KO)-2. Este enfrentamiento entre ranqueados, que tenía en juego lograr un puesto en la parte más alta de la lista WBO, terminó con un controvertido triunfo del local Wilson por decisión unánime, siendo las cartulinas un razonable 96-94, un sospechoso 97-93 y un horrendo e injustificable 98-92. Bastión Boxeo puntuó el combate 95-95.
Realmente fue un choque muy igualado y difícil de puntuar, por lo que resulta extremadamente complicado poder dar a uno de los boxeadores todos los asaltos menos dos. Y es que en este choque de estilos entre la elusividad y movilidad de Giménez y la firmeza y la potencia de Wilson, realmente hubo muy poco que separase a los contendientes en varios de los rounds.
En ocasiones, el argentino logró evitar casi todas las manos de su contrincante y llegó con astutos jabs o veloces combinaciones con manos arriba y abajo en inesperadas entradas. En otros momentos, Wilson lograba dar un paso adelante y llegar con algún sólido jab o algún golpe de poder en gancho zurdo que decantaba las acciones de su lado. Y en muchas otras ocasiones, simplemente, ambos se cruzaban en breves y rápidos intercambios en los que conectaban y bloqueaban manos a partes iguales y sin que ninguno de ellos marcase la diferencia claramente.
Además, no hubo cambios de tendencia generales más allá del hecho, a penas intuido, de que Giménez (si bien no tuvo un bajón de rendimiento, que podría haberse producido por sus constantes desplazamientos) fue más ágil y eficaz durante la primera mitad y en la segunda Wilson logró encontrar algunas oportunidades más. Sin embargo, terminados los diez asaltos, no había un incuestionable ganador y las cartulina de dos de los jueces parecen obedecer únicamente a un evidente sesgo localista.
Es por esto que el equipo de Giménez ha pedido una revancha a la WBO, organismo del que había un cinturón menor en juego, estando ahora en manos de un comité evaluar si ordena un segundo combate entre ambos, algo que parece necesario teniendo en cuenta que, en virtud de esta victoria, Wilson podría quedar en posición de pelear por el cinturón mundial si éste queda vacante.

On the undercard of the Liam Paro vs. Jonathan Navarro event, which took place yesterday at the Convention Centre in Cairns, Australia, an interesting super featherweight duel took place between Australian former world title challenger Liam Wilson 16(8KO)-3(3) and former Argentine and current South American champion Ayrton Osmar Giménez 22(4KO)-2. This clash between ranked fighters, which had a top 3 spot on the WBO list at stake, ended with a controversial unanimous decision victory for local fighter Wilson. The scores were a reasonable 96-94, a suspicious 97-93, and a horrendous and unjustifiable 98-92. Bastion Boxing scored the fight 95-95.
It was truly a very close and difficult fight to score, so it is extremely difficult to give either boxer all but two rounds. In this clash of styles between Giménez’s elusiveness and mobility and Wilson’s composure and power, there was very little to separate the fighters in several rounds.
At times, the Argentinian managed to avoid almost all of his opponent’s hands and landed clever jabs or quick combinations with hands up and down in unexpected attacks. At other times, Wilson managed to step forward and land a solid jab or a power punch in left hook that tipped the action in his favor. And on many other occasions, the two engaged in brief, quick exchanges in which they connected and blocked hands, with neither of them gaining a clear advantage.
Furthermore, there were no general changes in the trend beyond the fact, barely discernible, that Giménez (while not experiencing a drop in performance, which he could have suffered by his constant movement) was more agile and effective during the first half, and Wilson managed to find more opportunities in the second. However, after ten rounds, there was no clear winner, and two of the scorecards appeared to be influenced purely by hometown bias.
This is why Giménez’s team has requested a rematch from the WBO, organization that had a minor belt at stake in the bout. It is now up to a committee to evaluate whether to order a second fight between the two, something that seems necessary considering that, by virtue of this victory, Wilson could be in a position to fight for the world belt if it becomes vacant.
