Hitchins retuvo su cinturón mundial ante Kambosos

Sin haber tenido una buena actuación desde 2021, teniendo desventajas en altura, alcance y juventud, así como un peor estado físico y moral, y ascendiendo de división para combatir contra un campeón mundial invicto como visitante, y que encima posee el estilo de boxeo que más le cuesta enfrentar, el australiano George Kambosos Jr. 22(10KO)-4(2) prácticamente no tenía opciones de triunfo ante Richardson Hitchins 20(8KO)-0. Así, no resultó para nada sorprendente que Hitchins se hiciese con una victoria por KOT en el octavo round y retuviese su cinturón mundial IBF del peso superligero.
Con su jab y algunos directos diestros al ataque o la contra, Hitchins controló muy temprano en la pelea, teniendo Kambosos evidentes dificultades para lidiar con el boxeo técnico de su oponente, que siempre estaba atento para evitar manos con un paso atrás o agachándose. De todos modos, lo más llamativo no fue este previsible dominio táctico de las acciones por parte del olímpico Hitchins, sino que Kambosos fuese capaz de, eventualmente, llegar a cortar los espacios pero no supiese o quisiese dar continuidad: en ocasiones llegó a la distancia corta tras un gancho de mano adelantada aislado, pero inmediatamente daba un paso atrás para volver a situarse en la distancia media o media-larga.
Así, con Hitchins siendo superior round tras round y Kambosos no pudiendo aprovechar las pocas oportunidades que tenía ante un rival que, pese a sus ventajas, cometía fallos, la pelea fue desgastando al veterano excampeón hasta que se llegó a la conclusión. Antes de ella, un gancho zurdo dejó tocado a Kambosos en el quinto round y le supuso recibir una andanada de puños, pero la resistió, siendo en el octavo asalto cuando Hitchins le derribó con un nuevo hook de izquierda al cuerpo seguido de una derecha. Kambosos se levantó tarde y con mucha dificultad y no parecía en condiciones de seguir, de modo que el árbitro detuvo el combate.
Tras el combate, Eddie Hearn señaló que ahora se le buscarán grandes peleas a Hitchins, si bien los posibles planes para hacerle medirse a un nombre famoso de la división del peso superligero no podrán pasar por alto la defensa obligatoria que tendrá que afrontar ante el pegador Subriel Matías.

Having not performed well since 2021, suffering from disadvantages in height, reach, and youth, as well as having a poorer physical and mental shape, and moving up a weight class to fight an undefeated world champion on the road, and who also possesses the boxing style most difficult for him to face, Australian George Kambosos Jr. 22(10KO)-4(2) had virtually no chance of winning against Richardson Hitchins 20(8KO)-0. Thus, it was not at all surprising that Hitchins earned a TKO victory in the eighth round and retained his IBF super lightweight world belt.
With his jab and some right hands attacking and countering, Hitchins established control very early in the fight, while Kambosos clearly struggled to deal with the technical boxing of his opponent, who was always alert to avoid hands with a step back or ducking. However, the striking aspect of the bout wasn’t Hitchins’ predictable tactical dominance of the actions, but rather that Kambosos was able to, occasionally, close the distance but didn’t know how (or not wanted) to follow through: occasionally, he reached close range after a lead hook, but immediately stepped back to return to medium or medium-long distance.
Thus, with Hitchins being superior round after round and Kambosos being unable to capitalize on the few opportunities he had against an opponent who, despite his advantages, was making mistakes, the fight wore down the veteran former champion until it came to an end. Before this, a left hook hurt Kambosos in the fifth round and made him receive a barrage of punches, but he withstood them. It wasn’t until the eighth round that Hitchins knocked him down with another left hook to the body followed by a right hand to the head. Kambosos got up late and with great difficulty and didn’t seem in condition to continue, so the referee stopped the fight.
After the match, Eddie Hearn stated that they will now look for big fights for Hitchins, although any plans to have him face a well-known name in the super lightweight division can’t overlook the mandatory defense he will have to face against puncher Subriel Matías.
