Jermall Charlo regresó con fácil victoria ante Thomas LaManna

Después de haber estado un año y medio fuera del ring y haber tenido graves problemas personales, la cuestión principal respecto al excampeón mundial Jermall Charlo 34(23KO)-0 era que volviese a subirse al ring y no tanto qué rendimiento iba a mostrar en su primer combate de retorno. En cualquier caso, a diferencia de Plant, Charlo sí cumplió con su cometido y superó sin dificultades a un Thomas LaManna 39(18KO)-6(4)-1 que está muy lejos del nivel de la cumbre de la división y que, realmente, por aptitudes, logros y estilo era mucho más asequible que Reséndiz.. El triunfo de Charlo llegó por KOT en el sexto asalto.
Desde los primeros instantes se vio la diferencia abismal entre el jab de Charlo y su rival, logrando el excampeón conectar afilados directos de mano adelantada que enrojecieron el rostro de LaManna. Posteriormente, Charlo comenzó a desplegar derechazos, uno-dos y algún gancho zurdo para dejar claro que era cuestión de tiempo que su oponente cayese al tapiz. LaManna intentó moverse, agarrarse, esquivar y llegar con algún jab, pero su total falta de contundencia le impidió hacerse respetar, de modo que Charlo siguió insistiendo en sus calmados ataques hasta que en el tercer round derribó a su oponente: lo dañó con una derecha y, cuando se intentó agarrar, le asestó un gancho diestro.
En el cuarto asalto LaManna volvió a tocar la lona, en esta ocasión con su rodilla, si bien el árbitro no lo vio y fue necesaria la revisión de la repetición para decretar el knockdown entre asaltos. Finalmente, en el quinto asalto Charlo derribó otra vez a su contrincante con una derecha recta y, en el comienzo del sexto round, el médico aconsejó al árbitro detener el desnivelado choque, como así se hizo.
Tras el triunfo, muchos realizaron desmedidos halagos al rendimiento de Charlo, no teniendo en cuenta la gigantesca disparidad de nivel entre ambos contendientes. Y es que, aunque hizo lo que debía y no lo hizo mal, a Charlo le faltó algo de fluidez en su boxeo y dejó ocasiones evidentes para el contragolpe que mostraron que, si quiere disputar un choque contra un rival del máximo nivel y en buen estado ahora que quizás el duelo ante Plant no se realizará, deberá quitarse todavía bastante óxido.

After a year and a half out of the ring and having suffered serious personal problems, the main issue regarding former world champion Jermall Charlo 34(23KO)-0 was whether he would get back into the ring, not how he would perform in his first fight back. In any case, unlike Plant, Charlo did his job and easily defeated Thomas LaManna 39(18KO)-6(4)-1, who is very far from the top of the division and, actually, in terms of skills, achievements, and style, was a much easier opponent than Reséndiz. Charlo’s victory came via sixth-round TKO.
From the first moments, the huge difference between Charlo’s jab and his opponent’s was evident, with the former champion landing sharp straight shots with his lead hand that reddened LaManna’s face. Charlo subsequently began unleashing right hands, one-two combinations and occasional left hooks, making it clear it was only a matter of time before his opponent fell to the mat. LaManna tried to move, hold, dodge, and jab, but his complete lack of forcefulness prevented him from deterring his opponent. Charlo continued to calmly attack until he knocked his opponent down in the third round: he hurt him with a right hand, and when he tried to clinch, he landed a right hook.
In the fourth round, LaManna touched the canvas again, this time with his knee, although the referee didn’t see it, and a replay review was needed to rule the knockdown between rounds. Finally, in the fifth round, Charlo knocked his opponent down again with a straight right hand, and at the start of the sixth round, the doctor advised the referee to stop the uneven fight.
After the win, many highly praised Charlo’s performance, failing to take into account the enormous disparity in level between the two fighters. Indeed, he did what he should and did it fine, but Charlo lacked some smoothness in his boxing and gave obvious opportunities for counterpunching, which showed that if he wants to face a top-level opponent in good shape now that the fight against Plant may not happen, he’ll still have to shake off a lot of rust.
