Previa: Sunny Edwards debuta con Matchroom Boxing ¿Se cumplirán las promesas de unificación?

La compañía Matchroom Boxing lleva desde 2019 representando los intereses del monarca WBC del peso mosca Julio César Martínez, y prácticamente después de cada pelea de éste, Eddie Hearn ha asegurado que el siguiente combate del mexicano sería una unificación. Sin embargo, estas declaraciones de Hearn han sido falsas, como tantas otras, y Martínez ha basado su reinado en defensas voluntarias (por lo general ante rivales sencillos) y su mayor pelea ha sido un combate en el peso supermosca contra un veterano “Chocolatito” que lo dominó completamente.
Teniendo en cuenta que Hearn representa también al nuevo monarca WBO de la división, es decir Jesse Rodríguez, y que a éste se ha sumado el recientemente fichado titular IBF Sunny “Showtime” Edwards 19(4KO)-0, la esperanza de muchos fans es que al fin se pacten unificaciones en la división del peso mosca ahora que Matchroom controla tres de los cinturones. No obstante, antes de un choque de monarcas, Edwards debutará con la citada compañía en una defensa voluntaria…
Esta puesta en juego se producirá el sábado en el Wembley Arena de Londres, Reino Unido, ante el invicto chileno Andrés Campos 15(4KO)-0. Éste ha hecho todo lo que ha podido (teniendo en cuenta el contexto del boxeo de su país) para desarrollarse, progresar y entrar en los rankings, contando además con una base técnica sólida, tenacidad y fuerza física. Dicho esto, Campos tiene una falta de experiencia de calidad muy importante (sus mayores duelos han sido ante veteranas piedras de toque), no tiene una destreza ni siquiera cercana a la del muy hábil Edwards y carece de pegada.
Por lo tanto, en un choque entre púgiles de limitada potencia, la calidad técnica, el instinto boxístico y la eficacia defensiva de Edwards deberían poder marcar la diferencia a su favor. Ciertamente, el campeón ha tenido varios combates en los que ha ganado por estrecho margen, y sus enormes excesos de confianza tarde o temprano le costarán caro, pero no parece que Campos vaya a ser el boxeador que le derrote contra pronóstico.
Respaldo del evento
Las peleas que acompañarán al Edwards-Campos serán, como en las últimas veladas de Matchroom, choques que están lejos de cumplir las expectativas de los fans. Quizás el encuentro más interesante del respaldo será el primer asalto a un cinturón mundial por parte de la peso supergallo Ellie Scotney 6(0KO)-0, que retará a la monarca IBF, la australiana Cherneka Johnson 15(6KO)-1. Aunque no tiene un mal juego de piernas, Johnson es considerada la titular reinante de nivel más bajo en el peso supergallo, por lo que, sumándose a esto su condición de visitante y su derrota ante Shannon O’Connell, es inevitable que la prospecta Scotney parta como favorita.
En otro campeonato mundial femenino, la campeona WBA del peso gallo Nina Hughes 5(2KO)-0, tras destronar a Jaime Mitchell, dará un paso atrás enfrentándose a una Katie Healy 6(0KO)-0 que, al margen de su experiencia como kickboxer, ha logrado cinco de sus seis victorias ante rivales de récord negativo y dependerá sobre todo de su garra para intentar igualar las acciones.
Finalmente, los prospectos Cheavon Clarke 5(4KO)-0 y Youssef Khoumari 15(6KO)-1-1 afrontarán peleas de desarrollo en las que son claros favoritos para vencer. El peso crucero Clarke se enfrentará a un David Jamieson 10(7KO)-2(1) que en su mayor combate fue derrotado en ocho rounds por el campeón británico Mikael Lawal, mientras que el peso superpluma Khoumari pugnará contra un Reece Bellotti 15(13KO)-5(2) que lleva 14 meses inactivo y que sólo ha peleado una vez desde que Raymond Ford lo batió en tres asaltos.

Matchroom Boxing has been representing WBC flyweight titlist Julio César Martínez since 2019 and, after almost each of his fights, Eddie Hearn has said that the Mexican’s next bout would be a unification. However, these statements by Hearn have been false, like so many others, and Martínez has based his reign on voluntary defenses (usually against easy opponents) and his biggest fight has been a super flyweight clash against the veteran «Chocolatito», who completely dominated him.
Taking into account that Hearn also represents the new WBO champion of the division, that is, Jesse Rodríguez, and that this fighter has been joined by the recently signed IBF titleholder Sunny “Showtime” Edwards 19(4KO)-0, the hope of many fans it is that unifications can finally be agreed in the flyweight division now that Matchroom is in control of three of the belts. However, before a clash of champions, Edwards will debut with the aforementioned company in a voluntary defense…
This defense will take place on Saturday at the Wembley Arena in London, United Kingdom, against the undefeated Chilean Andrés Campos 15(4KO)-0. The challenger has done everything he could, taking into account the situation of boxing in his country, to develop, progress and enter the rankings, and he also has a good technical foundation, tenacity and strength. That said, Campos has a huge lack of quality experience (his biggest matchups have been against veteran stepping stones), he doesn’t have anywhere near the ability of the highly skilled Edwards and he lacks punch.
Therefore, in a clash between non-punchers, Edwards’ technical quality, boxing instinct and defensive efficiency should be enough to allow him to win the fight. Certainly, the champion has had several bouts in which he has won by narrow margins, and his obvious overconfidence will sooner or later cost him dearly, but it does not seem that Campos is going to be the boxer who will upset him.
Undercard
The fights that will accompany the Edwards-Campos clash will be, as in the last Matchroom events, bouts that are far from meeting the expectations of the fans. Perhaps the most interesting matchup of the undercard will be the first world title fight for super bantamweight Ellie Scotney 6(0KO)-0, who will challenge the IBF champion, the Australian Cherneka Johnson 15(6KO)-1. Although she doesn’t have bad footwork, Johnson is considered the easiest super bantamweight reigning champion. So, adding to this that she fights away from home and that she lost to Shannon O’Connell, prospect Scotney is the betting favorite.
In another women’s world championship, the WBA bantamweight belt holder Nina Hughes 5(2KO)-0, after dethroning Jaime Mitchell, will take a step down facing Katie Healy 6(0KO)-0 who, regardless of her experience as a kickboxer, has scored five of her six victories against opponents with a negative record and will depend above all on her grit to try to be competitive.
Lastly, prospects Cheavon Clarke 5(4KO)-0 and Youssef Khoumari 15(6KO)-1-1 will face development fights in which they are clear favorites to win. Cruiserweight Clarke will face David Jamieson 10(7KO)-2(1), who in his biggest fight was defeated in eight rounds by British champion Mikael Lawal, while super featherweight Khoumari will face Reece Bellotti 15(13KO )-5(2), who has been inactive for 14 months and has only fought once since Raymond Ford beat him in three rounds.
