Chantelle Cameron

The judges finally admitted a defeat for Katie Taylor against great Chantelle Cameron

3Arena, Dublin, Ireland. Championship for the undisputed women’s super lightweight title. Cameron’s first defense.

In the Olympic final against Sofiya Ochigava, in her two fights against Delfine Persoon and against Amanda Serrano, the Irish Katie Taylor 22(6KO)-1 dodged bullets that seemed to hit her and scored controversial victories. However, this time the judges could not help her, since the undefeated British Chantelle Cameron 18(8KO)-0 put on a great offensive display, insisted with her power shots and her aggressiveness and retained her undisputed super lightweight crown. The result was a majority decision with scorecards of 95-95, 96-94 and 96-94.

Cameron started very aggressively, putting firm pressure and landing straight-hook combinations and uppercuts against a mobile Taylor, who tried to counter but generally with less success. In addition, in the duel of jabs Cameron was very competent (many times she outjabbed the skilled Taylor) as well as in the exchanges, in which her tenacity was decisive. Thus, and with the local receiving right hands when she tried to throw a counteroffensive, Cameron’s confidence increased and had even more success with her right hands, body shots, right uppercuts, etc.

Taylor needed to react quickly if she was to avoid defeat, so she moved more and attempted to counter cunningly and land quick combinations, but Cameron remained determined in her pressure and connected hard hooks in intense exchanges in the sixth round. As she could not match her at close range, Taylor moved again in the seventh round, but Cameron dominated the middle distance, landing crisp right hands and left hooks.

Perhaps in the eighth round Taylor had her best round until that moment with precise counters, but in the ninth round Cameron again punished her on the ropes with hooks and uppercuts. So even though Taylor threw everything she had left with barrages of hooks in the final round, it wasn’t enough for her to earn the win.

With this great victory, Cameron will finally receive the recognition she deserves as a pound-for-pound boxer and will aim for the biggest possible fights around her weight, obviously highlighting among them the possibility of a rematch to which Taylor has right by a clause in the contract of the bout.
