El enfrentamiento Eimantas Stanionis vs. Vergil Ortiz Jr. recibe nueva fecha oficialmente

En un principio el combate entre el lituano Eimantas Stanionis y el estadounidense Vergil Ortiz Jr. se suponía que iba a tener lugar el 18 de marzo, aunque entonces fue aplazado porque, supuestamente, el primero tuvo que ser sometido a una apendicectomía. Extrañamente, tras esta supuesta operación la pelea se reubicó en el calendario para el 29 de abril, pareciendo que era muy poco tiempo un mes entre una intervención quirúrgica y el combate.
Algunos sospecharon que la nueva fecha era falsa y que la pelea no se iba a producir entonces, y efectivamente el 29 de abril tampoco fue la fecha definitiva para el duelo, ya que Ortiz afirmó padecer un “brote de rhabdomyolysis a consecuencia de COVID persistente”, como si esa excusa pudiese ser justificada médica y racionalmente…
En fin, en ese punto pareció que, como tantísimas otras veces en la historia reciente, las promotoras no querían hacer que dos invictos con proyección se enfrentasen antes de que peleasen en un mundial y que simplemente estaban jugando para ver cómo camuflaban mejor su deseo de que el duelo no se llevase a cabo. Sin embargo, Golden Boy Promotions ha anunciado una tercera fecha para el enfrentamiento, que ahora está programado para el 8 de julio en el AT&T Center de San Antonio, Estados Unidos.
En esta ocasión los tiempos entre anuncio y fecha de la pelea son lógicos, ya que faltan cerca de dos meses. Por otro lado, el enfrentamiento tiene todo el sentido para ambos boxeadores, ya que con Terence Crawford y Errol Spence manteniendo estancada la división del peso wélter, en estos momentos ni Stanionis ni Ortiz pueden aspirar a un combate mayor, ni tienen una forma mejor de intentar hacer méritos para mostrar que merecen el mundial. Además, no contando Golden Boy con una escuadra demasiado profunda y teniendo sólo un par de nombres insignes (eso por no mencionar su tendencia a organizar peleas mal emparejadas) difícilmente podría encabezar uno de sus eventos con una pugna de más calibre protagonizada por uno de sus boxeadores.
Aun así, y aunque sobre el ring el Stanionis-Ortiz debería ser una batalla realmente buena valorando los estilos de ambos, el hecho es que nadie se debería sorprender si el combate se termina cancelando otra vez por algún pretexto creíble o no creíble, y finalmente la velada del 8 de julio termina siguiendo adelante con un puñado de duelos desparejados.

Initially the fight between the Lithuanian Eimantas Stanionis and the American Vergil Ortiz Jr. was supposed to take place on March 18, although it was then postponed because, supposedly, the former had to undergo an appendectomy. Strangely, after this supposed operation the fight was rescheduled for April 29, although just a month was a very short time between surgery and a bout.
Some suspected that the new date was fake and that the fight was not going to take place then, and indeed April 29 was not the final date for the clash either, since Ortiz claimed to be suffering from a «rhabdomyolysis flare-up due to long COVID» , as if that excuse could be medically and rationally justified…
Anyway, at that point it seemed that, like so many other times in recent history, the promoters didn’t want to make two undefeated prospects fight each other before facing a world title bout and that they were simply playing to see how to camouflage their desire to avoid the bout. However, Golden Boy Promotions has announced a third date for the showdown, which is now scheduled for July 8 at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, USA.
On this occasion, the amount of time between the announcement and the date of the fight is logical, since there are about two months left. On the other hand, the matchup makes perfect sense for both fighters, since with Terence Crawford and Errol Spence keeping the welterweight division stagnant, at this moment neither Stanionis nor Ortiz can hope for a bigger fight, nor do they have a better way to try to make merits to show that they deserve a world title opportunity. Also, as Golden Boy doesn’t have a very deep squad and just have only a couple of relevant names (not to mention its insistence on organizing badly matched fights), the company could hardly headline one of its cards with a fight of higher caliber featuring one of its boxers.
Even so, and although in the ring the Stanionis-Ortiz fight should be really good considering the styles of both boxers, the fact is that no one should be surprised if the clash ends up being canceled again for some credible or non-credible pretext, and finally the evening of July 8 ends up going ahead with a handful of mismatches.
