Previa: Tim Tszyu y Tony Harrison combaten por lograr oportunidad obligatoria ante el campeón indiscutido Charlo

Teniendo en cuenta que es el siguiente aspirante obligatorio del campeón indiscutido del peso superwélter Jermell Charlo, verdaderamente el australiano Tim Tszyu 21(15KO)-0 merece alabanzas por afrontar, sin necesidad alguna, un combate de “rodaje” y preparación tan difícil como enfrentarse al exmonarca mundial estadounidense Tony “Super Bad” Harrison 29(21KO)-3(3)-1.
Sin duda, muchos otros ni siquiera se habrían planteado un movimiento similar, y de hecho no tenemos que buscar demasiado para encontrar casos recientes como el de Jaime Munguía, que permaneció dos años como número 1 WBO del peso medio sin pedir una pelea contra el campeón Demetrius Andrade y afrontando combates a medida; o como el del número 1 IBF superwélter Bakhram Murtazaliev, que no ha disputado ni un mínimo reto desde que ganó una eliminatoria final ante Jorge Fortea en 2019.
De hecho, el propio Harrison fue muy claro al expresar su opinión respecto a la decisión de Tszyu de enfrentarse a él:
“Esta es la decisión más estúpida que puedes tomar como mánager, como promotor. Si fuese el siguiente en línea para pelear por todos los cinturones, no habría peleado contra Tim. No habría peleado con nadie para ser honesto […] Y les doy una palmada en la espalda, porque ha sido estúpido, muy estúpido. Valiente desde el punto de vista del boxeo, estúpido desde el punto de vista de los negocios. Si pudiese darle un abrazo a Tim ahora mismo, se lo daría”.
Otros no han expresado esta opinión con tanta dureza pero, lógicamente, sí han coincidido en que medirse a un boxeador tan hábil y experimentado como Harrison, que derrotó en una ocasión al propio Jermell Charlo, es un movimiento realmente osado por parte de Tszyu. En cualquier caso, esta pelea no sólo ofrece inconvenientes para el invicto australiano.
Si lograse vencerla daría todo un golpe en la mesa, por un lado, en cuanto a mostrar su valentía, su ambición y su deseo de encarar grandes retos, y por el otro, respecto a sus posibilidades de batir a Charlo. Asimismo, si se mira el asunto del revés, quizás Tszyu, que fue derribado por Terrell Gausha en su último combate, ha encarado el choque ante Harrison como una prueba de fuego que decida por sí misma si de verdad merece pelear en un mundial por la corona indiscutida. En otras palabras, quizás Tszyu y su equipo han pensado ¿para qué acceder al mundial ante el peligroso Charlo si no somos capaces de batir a un boxeador menos contundente, fuerte y sólido como Harrison?
Y es que, aunque combinándose la última gran actuación de Harrison con los arriba citados problemas de Tszyu ante Gausha muchos consideran que el estadounidense podrá lograr dar la sorpresa en el Qudos Bank Arena de Sydney, Australia, lo cierto es que “Super Bad” no es ni mucho menos una roca imbatible.
Hay que recordar que, aunque en el pasado fue considerado un insigne prospecto, tuvo gravísimos problemas de resistencia que le llevaron a una derrota contra pronóstico ante Willie Nelson que le forzó a cambiar de estilo. Aun así, Harrison siguió sin despuntar, siendo aplastado por Jarrett Hurd antes de lograr su triunfo sobre Charlo que, recordemos, fue quizás el resultado más controvertido de 2019 en cuanto a peleas mundiales se refiere. Finalmente, este éxito fugaz fue sucedido por una dura derrota en la revancha ante Charlo y por un empate con una floja actuación ante Bryant Perrella antes de su triunfo sobre Sergio García.
Respecto a este último, aunque Harrison ofreció quizás una de sus actuaciones más brillantes, el factor determinante en la pugna fue simple y llanamente que García no tuvo la pegada, explosividad y fuerza como para desgastar de manera crítica a su contrincante, fallando también en su corte de ring.
Sin embargo, si el contundente Tszyu aprovecha sus ventajas para presionar con determinación y avanzando tan rápido y constante como pueda, causa estragos cuando las acciones lleguen a la distancia corta y carga su peso en los clinches, quizás pueda llevar a aguas profundas a un Harrison que, recordemos, no se caracteriza ni por su encaje ni por su resistencia al cansancio. En este sentido hay que recordar que, desde que reconvirtió su boxeo, Harrison ya no pone tanto peso en los golpes y ha perdido mucha pegada (en otras palabras, ha renunciado a su potencia intentando mejorar su resistencia), no logrando un knockout desde 2018.
Por lo demás, si Tszyu no logra que Harrison tenga que quemar sus energías constantemente y no le hace pagar sus descuidos con dureza, el visitante perfectamente podría usar su altura y envergadura, sus afilados rectos, su movilidad y su astucia para crear una pelea tácticamente muy complicada para un rival con muchos menos recursos técnicos.
En cualquier caso, este es un muy interesante combate del peso superwélter (que será emitido en Estados Unidos a través de Showtime desde las 22:45 ET/19:45 PT, las 4:45 de la madrugada en hora española) y que permitirá aclarar mejor si Charlo está ante una gran amenaza enfrentándose a Tszyu o si este último no está a la altura de las circunstancias.

Considering that he is the next mandatory challenger for undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo, Australian Tim Tszyu 21(15KO)-0 truly deserves praise for facing, without any need, a “stay-busy” fight as difficult as battling former titlist Tony “Super Bad” Harrison 29(21KO)-3(3)-1.
Undoubtedly, many others would not even have considered a similar movement, and in fact it’s easy to find recent cases like that of Jaime Munguía, who spent two years as WBO number 1 middleweight without asking for a fight against the belt holder Demetrius Andrade while facing tailor-made bouts; or like that of the IBF number 1 super welterweight Bakhram Murtazaliev, who has avoided any kind of challenge since he won a final eliminator against Jorge Fortea in 2019.
In fact, Harrison himself was very clear in expressing his opinion regarding Tszyu’s decision to fight him:
“This is the stupidest decision you can make as management, as promotion. I’m next up to fight for all the belts, I wouldn’t have fought Tim. I wouldn’t have fought nobody to be honest. I would’ve waited it out […] And I’m patting them on the back because that was stupid. Very stupid. Courageous in a sense of boxing. Stupid in a sense of business. If I could hug Tim right now I would.”
Others have not expressed this opinion quite as harshly, but of course they have stated that taking on a boxer as skilled and experienced as Harrison, who once defeated Jermell Charlo, is a truly bold move on Tszyu’s part. In any case, this matchup doesn’t just offer drawbacks for the undefeated Australian.
If he manages to beat Harrison, he would make a huge statement, on the one hand, in terms of showing his courage, his ambition and his desire to face great challenges, and on the other, regarding his chances of beating Charlo. Also, if things are looked from a different perspective, perhaps Tszyu, who was knocked down by Terrell Gausha in his last fight, sees the match against Harrison as a litmus test that will decide if he really deserves to fight in a world championship for the undisputed crown. In other words, perhaps Tszyu and his team have thought, why step into the ring against the dangerous Charlo if we are not capable of beating a less forceful, strong and solid boxer like Harrison?
Although Harrison’s last great performance was close in time to the problems Tszyu suffered against Gausha, and many consider that the American will be able to achieve the upset at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia, the truth is that «Super Bad» It is by no means an unbeatable fighter.
It must be remembered that, even though in the past he was considered a remarkable prospect, he had serious stamina issues that led him to an unexpected loss against Willie Nelson that forced him to change his style. Even so, Harrison continued to fall short: he was crushed by Jarrett Hurd before scoring his win over Charlo, which was perhaps the most controversial result of 2019 in a world title fight. Ultimately, this fleeting success was followed by a tough rematch loss to Charlo and a weak performance in his draw against Bryant Perrella before his victory over Sergio Garcia.
Regarding the latter, although Harrison delivered perhaps one of his most brilliant performances, the determining factor in the bout was simply that García did not have the punch, explosiveness and strength to critically wear down his opponent, and he also failed in his ring cut.
However, if the hard-hitting Tszyu uses his advantages to pressure with determination and moves forward as fast and consistent as he can, unleashes hard power shots when actions reach the close range and uses his weight in the clinches, he might be able to take Harrison into deep waters, as the American is a boxer who is not characterized by his chin or his resistance to fatigue. In this sense, it must be remembered that, since he changed his boxing style, Harrison no longer puts much weight in his shots and that he has lost a lot of punch (in other words, he has given up his power trying to improve his stamina), something that has made him unable to score a stoppage since 2018.
For the rest, if Tszyu does not force Harrison to burn his energies constantly and does not make him pay for his oversights, the visitor could perfectly use his size and reach, his sharp straight punches, his mobility and his cunning to create a very complicated tactical fight for an opponent with far fewer technical resources.
In any case, this is a very interesting super welterweight bout (which will be broadcast in the United States on Showtime from 10:45 p.m. ET/7:45 p.m. PT, 3:45 a.m. UK time) and that will help clarify more if Charlo is facing a big threat against Tszyu or if the latter isn’t up to the task.
