El choque entre el invicto Hamed Ghaz 18(4KO)-1 y el extitular inglés del peso pluma Reece Mould 17(6KO)-1(1) parecía trascendental para las carreras de ambos, y más concretamente para que pudiesen mantener vivas sus aspiraciones en la cumbre británica. Además, iba a servir también para mostrar más claramente de qué estaban hechos los dos. Pues bien, de esta prueba de fuego quien salió con el brazo en alto fue Mould, que mostró garra al ataque y destreza boxeando ante un Ghaz muy bravo para proclamarse campeón inglés en una segunda división y poner sus miras en el título británico a medio plazo.
El resultado de este gran combate fue una decisión unánime con justas puntuaciones de 97-94, 96-94 y 96-94.
Desde el primer asalto la pelea tuvo intensidad, ofreciendo intercambios considerablemente duros y en los que ambos se alcanzaron con mucha claridad con cruzados diestros, ganchos zurdos, directos, etc. La pelea se había convertido rápidamente en una batalla de desgaste en la que quien resistiese peor el castigo iba a verse en apuros. Inicialmente éste fue Ghaz, que en el segundo asalto quedó tocado por un gancho zurdo arriba, si bien el boxeador siguió cruzando en corta con gran valentía. De hecho, todavía en el segundo asalto, un directo de Mould estremeció de nuevo a su adversario, pero éste igualmente contestó contra las cuerdas a la desesperada y se mantuvo en el choque.
Aunque las cosas habían empezado bien para Mould, en el tercer episodio éste fue sacudido por un par de duros curvos, aunque también mostró su coraje intentando mantenerse en corta intercambiando. En un cierto momento Mould pareció estar seriamente afectado, pero en el cuarto asalto la batalla en corta hizo que Ghaz recibiese poderosos ganchos a la cabeza que amenazaron con dañarlo.
Estando así las cosas, Ghaz decidió mantenerse firme en su presión, mientras que Mould desde el quinto round intentó dar más espacios, desplazarse, tirar el jab e intentar sorprender contragolpeando o lanzando contraofensivas repentinas. La táctica dio resultados, puesto que Ghaz falló un considerable número de puños y se expuso a golpes de poder nítidos. De todos modos, esto no implicó que Mould pasase a estar en una pelea sencilla, ya que la presión de su rival siguió acechándole y en ocasiones recibió peligrosas combinaciones. Aun así, el doble jab, la puntería a la contra, el solido uso de las piernas y la buena gestión de su trabajo fueron determinantes para asegurar el triunfo de Mould ante un Ghaz que en el noveno round sufrió un grave corte en el párpado derecho por choque de cabezas.
Mould ahora deberá prestar atención a lo que pase en Cardiff el día 22 de abril, cuando Gavin Gwynne expondrá su cinturón británico del peso ligero ante Craig Woodruff. El vencedor perfectamente podría terminar siendo su oponente en un futuro no muy lejano, si bien quizás antes Mould pueda afianzar su posición como titular inglés del peso ligero con alguna útil defensa.

The clash between undefeated Hamed Ghaz 18(4KO)-1 and former English featherweight titleholder Reece Mould 17(6KO)-1(1) seemed decisive for both of their careers, and more specifically so that they could keep alive their aspirations in the British top. Besides, it was going to serve also to show more clearly what they were both made of. Well, from this trial by fire, the fighter who came out with his hand raised was Mould, who showed grit in attack and boxing skills against a very brave Ghaz to become a two-division English champion and set his sights on the British title in the medium term.
The result of this great fight was a unanimous decision with fair scores of 97-94, 96-94 and 96-94.
From the first round the fight had intensity, offering considerably tough exchanges in which both hit each other very clearly with right overhands, left hooks, straight hands, etc. The fight had quickly turned into a battle of attrition in which whoever withstood the punishment worse was going to find himself in trouble. Initially this was Ghaz, who in the second round was hurt by a left hook up, although the boxer continued to exchange at short distance with great courage. In fact, still in the second round, a right hand from Mould rocked his opponent again, but Ghaz again answered desperately against the ropes and remained in the clash.
Although things had started well for Mould, in the third round he was shaken by a couple of hard hooks, though he also showed his courage trying to stay at close range trading leather. At one point Mould seemed to be considerably affected by the punches received, but in the fourth round Ghaz was hit by powerful hooks to the head that threatened to hurt him.
In that situation, Ghaz decided to remain firm in his pressure, while from the fifth round Mould tried to create more space, move, throw his jab and try to surprise his opponent counterpunching or launching sudden counteroffensives. The tactic paid off, as Ghaz missed a considerable number of punches and exposed himself to clean power shots. In any case, this did not mean that Mould had an easy fight from then on, since his opponent’s pressure continued and sometimes he received dangerous combinations. Even so, his double jab, his accuracy counterpunching, his solid use of the legs and his good management of the work in the round were decisive in ensuring Mould’s victory over Ghaz, who in the ninth round suffered a serious cut on his right eyelid due to a clash of heads.
Mould will now have to pay attention to what happens in Cardiff on April 22, when Gavin Gwynne will defend his British lightweight belt against Craig Woodruff. The winner of that bout could very well end up being his opponent in the not-too-distant future, although before that fight Mould might be able to cement his position as English lightweight titleholder with a useful defense.
