Preview: Undisputed championships Serrano-Cruz and Baumgardner-Mekhaled headline Matchroom/DAZN card

@BastionBoxing

The Hulu Theater at the Madison Square Garden in New York, United States, will be the venue in which this Saturday women’s boxing will reach another historic milestone, since Matchroom Boxing will organize an event headlined by two undisputed championships. The featured bout of this card will be the clash between the Puerto Rican, WBC, IBF and WBO featherweight champion, Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano 43(23KO)-2-1, and the Mexican, WBA titleholder, Erika “Dinamita” Cruz 15(3KO)-1.

Apart from the fact that this is a fight between the number 1 and number 2 in the division, for many the main interest of the match is to see how Serrano performs before facing Katie Taylor in a rematch in a few months, the first bout being considered one of the most significant in the history of women’s boxing. Thus, with such a perspective for the future, it is inevitable that many want to see this Saturday’s duel as a mere formality, although Serrano could expect a tough fight.

Despite in the past she showed good footwork and skillful movements, in recent years Serrano has focused on offering frontal pressure trying to impose her explosiveness and power on the attack, often neglecting her defense. So, facing a strong, brave boxer who likes to hold the center of the ring and counter her aggressive opponents, this should be a good battle with plenty of power shots and exchanges.

Given that Cruz hasn’t won by stoppage in ten fights (since 2017), has a simpler boxing, and doesn’t have a pace or a work rate equivalent to Serrano’s, it’s inevitable to expect the latter to achieve victory, especially if the Mexican renounces to having the initiative too much or if the Puerto Rican takes advantage of her slow legs. However, Serrano will need to be firm with her right hook, exchange carefully in this duel of southpaws so as not to be surprised by her opponent’s overhands and avoid being so overconfident as she attacks.

Baumgardner follows the path set
That the powers in the elite of the industry want to bring the American Alycia «The Bomb» Baumgardner 13(7KO)-1 to stardom it could already be seen when she won the verdict of the judges in an even duel against Mikaela Mayer that she faced in an event organized by a rival promoter to hers; when before that fight an advertisement starring her was broadcast dozens of times on ESPN; or when the WBA ordered a unification against Hyun Mi Choi despite in other more necessary cases the sanctioning body refused to do so.

However, once Hyun Mi Choi alleged an injury and was stripped of her belt, the intentions for Baumgardner’s career were not hidden at all, since Elhem “The Diamond” Mekhaled 15(3KO)-1 was selected as her opponent to fight for the undisputed super featherweight title. The French boxer never has owned a world title and is coming from a defeat, something that in theory should prevent her from accessing a world championship, even more to one for the undisputed title…

That being said, it is true that in her defeat Mekhaled offered a commendable performance against Delfine Persoon, so it can’t be said that she has a low level. All in all, Baumgardner will be clear favorite, having much more speed and punch, superior technique, great footwork and a punching technique on a different level.

In order for Mekhaled to hope to achieve the upset, she will need to pressure very firmly trying to take the fight to mid and close range and look to throw a great number of punches against an opponent who relies heavily on isolated and precise shots. Conversely, if she hesitates or proves incapable of closing the gap quickly, the fluidity and skill of Baumgardner, who has much more technical resources, will lead Mekhaled to defeat through movements and fast chosen hands.

Rest of the fights in the event
In the main card broadcast by DAZN, in theory, only two more fights will be aired. In one, undefeated American super lightweight, IBF number 13, Richardson Hitchins 15(7KO)-0 will seek his biggest victory to date against American southpaw John «El Terrible» Bauzá 17(7KO)-0, while in the other Puerto Rican Olympian Yankiel “El Doctorcito” Rivera 2(2KO)-0 will look to shine in his Matchroom debut facing American Fernando “Leoncito” Díaz 11(3KO)-2-1 in a flyweight bout.

Theoretically, both YouTube and DAZN will broadcast the remaining clashes of the bill: Australian Olympian Skye Nicolson 5(0KO)-0 will be overwhelming favorite to capture a WBC minor featherweight title, and climb to the top 5, facing Spaniard Tania Alvarez 7(1KO)-0; British-Somali super bantamweight Ramla Ali 7(2KO)-0 will have another tailor-made bout against Australian Avril Mathie 8(3KO)-0-1; lightweight, US national gold medalist, Harley Mederos 4(3KO)-0 will face Mexican Julio Madera 4(3KO)-2; promising American super middleweight Shadasia Green 11(10KO)-0 will prepare for her first world championship bout facing Swedish former unified champion Elin Cederoos 8(4KO)-1; and American Aarón Aponte 6(2KO)-0-1 will move away from a draw in his last fight fighting at super lightweight against his compatriot Joshua David Rivera 8(3KO)-1.

The Serrano-Cruz main card will be broadcast on DAZN on Saturday from 20:00 ET / 17:00 PT, 1:00 in the United Kingdom, while the preliminary bouts will be aired from 16:15 ET/13:15 PT, 21:15 on the UK.
