The best fights of the weekend (1/27-28/2023)

@BastionBoxing

Little by little, boxing activity is increasing its intensity after the Christmas break, and in the coming days we will no longer have a situation like that of the first weeks of the year, in which there were very few fights to highlight. Even so, although there will be a couple of world title bouts, some interesting matches and the participation of some well-known names, we are still far from the level of activity that will be reached in the coming months.

Friday, January 27
The biggest fight on Friday will take place at the Showcenter Complex in Monterrey, Mexico, televised by ESPN Knockout, as two brave and aggressive boxers like former unified world champion Francisco “Chihuas” Rodríguez 36(25KO)-6(1)-1 and former world title challenger Joel “El Trino” Córdova 13(3KO)-6(3)-2 will square off in a flyweight duel that should be packed with action and exchanges. This should be especially the case as both will look to avoid distancing themselves from the top after having suffered defeats in their last bouts, both in meritorious performances outside their country: Rodríguez against Junto Nakatani and Córdova against Samuel Carmona.

On the other hand, at the Quiet Cannon Country Club in Montebello, United States, UFC Fight Pass will offer an evening in which the WBC number 6 super welterweight, the Ukrainian Serhii «El Flaco» Bohachuk 21(21KO)-1(1), will seek to maintain his 100% of stoppage wins, extend his winning streak to four (since his unexpected defeat against Brandon Adams) and strengthen his position in the ranking facing the experienced Nathaniel Gallimore 22(17KO)-6(1)-1 with a minor belt at stake. Although Gallimore comes from a wide defeat against Fiodor Czerkaszyn, he is a resistant boxer, who is usually competent and who has faced opponents such as Julian Williams, Jeison Rosario, Erickson Lubin or Sebastian Fundora, so he should give Bohachuk some good rounds and put his finishing ability to test.

Lastly regarding Friday, it can be mentioned that, at the Castleton Banquet & Conference Center in Windham, United States, heavyweight Otto Wallin 24(14KO)-1, WBO number 3, WBC number 9 and IBF number 12, will face a tune-up fight to stay prepared for a big opportunity battling Mexican-American Helaman Olguín 9(4KO)-4(3)-1, who is coming off a draw against a Golden Gloves winner like Roney Hines.

Saturday, January 28
On Saturday there will be a world championship for the unified WBC-IBF-WBO light heavyweight titles between two punchers like the fearsome champion Artur Beterbiev and his powerful mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde. Read more following the link.

Another world championship fight will take place at this event, as WBA flyweight champion Artem Dalakian will face one of his biggest challenges to date against David “Medallita” Jiménez. There is talk about the possibility of the winner later battling Sunny Edwards in a unification. Read more following the link.

Since it will be broadcast by DAZN, many will also pay attention to the evening that will take place at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, United States, organized by Golden Boy Promotions. However this looks like another mockery of the promoter towards the fans in which only luck, or too much overconfidence from the favorites, will prevent all the underdogs from suffering very wide defeats.

In the main event, the overprotected welterweight Alexis Rocha 21(13KO)-1 will finally not even face Anthony Young but the Ghanaian veteran George «Red Tiger» Ashie 33(25KO)-5-1, fighter whose biggest bout was a loss to Kevin Mitchell in 2006…

Regarding the rest of the card, super middleweight Bektemir Melikuziev 10(8KO)-1(1) should have no problem knocking out Ulises Sierra 17(10KO)-2(1)-2, who was beaten in one round by Edgar Berlanga and who has not boxed for 15 months; lightweight prospect Floyd Schofield 12(10KO)-0 will score a one-sided victory over Alberto Mercado 17(4KO)-4-1, who lacks punch and who has clearly lost all his biggest fights; and promising Óscar Collazo 5(3KO)-0 will be obvious favorite to win a WBO minimumweight eliminator against the substitute Yudel Reyes 15(5KO)-1, who suffered his only loss against Moisés Caro, boxer pummeled by Dusmatov and dominated by Wilfredo Méndez.

With these fights mentioned, only these others can be highlighted on a Saturday full of mismatches:
-At the RCC Boxing Academy in Yekaterinburg, Russia, Boets Tv will televise an evening for prospects in which, among other duels, Tajik lightweight Bakhodur Usmonov 3(0KO)-0 will face a tough test against Russian Dmitrii Khasiev 12(6KO)-4(2)-2.
-At the International Conference Hall in Nagoya, Japan, aired by Abema, former world light flyweight champion Masamichi Yabuki 14(13KO)-4(2) will seek to obtain his second recovery victory against Ronald Chacón 28(20KO)-1-1, who has only faced extremely low-level opponents so far.
-At the Chateau Neuf in Oslo, Norway, super featherweight Bernard Angelo Torres 16(7KO)-1 will try to bounce back from a controversial loss to Frency Fortunato Saya (suffered in a ShoBox card) by fighting journeyman Cristian Ávila 18(14KO)-7(5)-1, whom Saya beat by seventh round TKO.
-At the Club Deportivo Jorge Newbery in Gálvez, Argentina, TyC Sports will televise a championship for the vacant South American flyweight belt in which the Argentinian Jeremías Reyes 9(8KO)-0 will be overwhelming favorite to defeat Colombian Edinson Martínez 11(9KO)-2(2)-2.
