Con la captura de un título menor WBO ante Cristian Javier Ayala el pasado octubre, el argentino Cristian “Escopeta” Reggiardo 9(5KO)-4(2) había logrado situarse en el ranking del peso wélter de dicho organismo. Con todo, lo que rápido vino, rápido se fue, ya que sólo una pelea más tarde fue noqueado en el séptimo asalto por su invicto compatriota Joel “El Popo” Mafauad 9(4KO)-0.
Resulta evidente cuando un boxeador sale al ring dispuesto a no desaprovechar una oportunidad, algo que Mafauad dejó claro en dos primeros rounds en los que empezó fuerte, avanzando con firmeza contra su rival y atacándole insistentemente al torso con ganchos zurdos y jabs. Dio la sensación de que quizás Reggiardo quería aguantar bloqueando esperando a que su rival se cansase, pero en el segundo asalto un derechazo de Mafauad le tambaleó y demostró que no era para nada conveniente aguardar a que éste se desgastase.
Así, Reggiardo decidió cada vez desplazarse menos, ceder menos terreno y cruzar más golpes en la distancia media con su adversario. Esto le dio resultados en el tercer y el cuarto asalto, en los que pareció conectar las manos más potentes en los intercambios, aunque la pelea se mantuvo contendida, recuperando algo de actividad Mafauad en el quinto round.
La pelea había entrado en una fase crítica, pareciendo inicialmente que Mafauad se estaba cansando un tanto por su intensa primera mitad, lo que “Escopeta” aprovechó para llegar con buenos directos en el sexto episodio. Sin embargo, en el séptimo Mafauad volvió a la carga y con un par de derechas sintió que había dañado a su contrincante, al que llevó contra las cuerdas y le atacó con largas series de hooks. Finalmente, tras ser hostigado prolongadamente, Reggiardo tuvo que arrodillarse en la lona tras un sólido jab al cuerpo sucedido por un par de hooks abajo, no logrando levantarse durante la cuenta del árbitro.
En su primer enfrentamiento a diez asaltos, Mafauad obtuvo una contundente victoria y, lo que es mejor aún, lo hizo ofreciendo una actuación repleta de determinación y ritmo pese a venir de 15 meses de inactividad. Con este triunfo y la consiguiente captura de un título menor, Mafauad situará su nombre por debajo del puesto 15 en el ranking WBO del peso wélter, pero en una división como ésta indudablemente necesitará aparcar sus aspiraciones internacionales por el momento y centrarse en intentar aumentar su experiencia y extender su cadena de victorias en el circuito de su país, cosa que seguramente le llevará a ofrecer nuevos entretenidos combates a la afición.

Capturing a WBO minor title against Cristian Javier Ayala last October, Argentinian Cristian “Escopeta” Reggiardo 9(5KO)-4(2) managed to put his name in the welterweight ranking of that organization. However, he lost that position as quick as he gained it, since just one fight later he was knocked out in the seventh round by his compatriot Joel “El Popo” Mafauad 9(4KO)-0.
It is evident when a boxer enters the ring willing to make the most of an opportunity, something that Mafauad made clear in the first two rounds, in which he advanced firmly against his opponent and insistently attacked his torso with left hooks and jabs. It seemed that perhaps Reggiardo wanted to just block waiting for his opponent to get tired, but in the second round a right hand from Mafauad staggered him and showed that it was not at all convenient to wait for him to slow down.
Thus, Reggiardo decided to move less, hold his ground more and even exchange in the middle distance. This paid off in the third and fourth rounds, in which he seemed to land the most powerful hands, though the fight remained close, with Mafauad regaining some offensive activity in the fifth round.
The fight had entered a critical phase, and initially it looked like Mafauad was getting a bit tired by his intense first half, something «Escopeta» took advantage of to land good right hands in the sixth episode. However, in the seventh Mafauad charged again and, with a pair of right hands, he felt that he had hurt his opponent, who he pinned against the ropes and attacked with long barrages of hooks. Finally, after being punched without much of an answer for a long time, Reggiardo had to kneel in the canvas due to a solid jab to the body followed by a couple of hooks downstairs. The boxer did not get up during the referee’s count and so the fight ended.
In his first ten-round matchup, Mafauad scored a resounding victory and, even better, he did so by delivering a performance packed with determination and offensive intensity despite coming off a 15-month layoff. With this win and the subsequent conquest of a minor title, Mafauad will put his name just below the number 15 in the WBO welterweight ranking. However, fighting in such a difficult division, he will undoubtedly need to put his international aspirations on hold for now and focus on trying to increase his experience and extend his string of victories in his country, something that will surely lead him to offer new entertaining fights to the fans.
