Sin poder contar de su lado con la posibilidad de un knockout o un knockdown debido a su limitada pegada y enfrentándose como visitante a una boxeadora invicta y en la que su promotor había puesto muchas esperanzas, la mexicana Jéssica Nery Plata 29(3KO)-2 afrontó un reto más que difícil. Sin embargo, ofreciendo una actuación realmente estupenda, Plata se hizo con una clara victoria ante la canadiense Kim Clavel 16(3KO)-1, que lo intentó y lo volvió a intentar con valentía, generando una pelea intensa, pero que siempre se quedó corta. Las puntuaciones del triunfo de Plata fueron un demasiado ajustado 96-94 y un doble 97-93 algo más razonable.
El enfrentamiento tuvo dos tipos de asaltos. En unos, Plata se desplazaba y utilizaba un seco y eficaz jab para frenar el avance de Clavel, a la que hacía fallar golpes con sutiles movimientos de hombros y la contragolpeaba con aislados cruzados, uppercuts o directos sucedidos por pasos laterales. En otros, cuando Clavel aceleraba al máximo sus pasos y a base de empeño se situaba en la distancia media-corta, las boxeadoras intercambiaron con agresividad, pero casi siempre fue Plata quien se llevó la mejor parte. Es decir, cuando Clavel impactaba un buen gancho zurdo, la mexicana conectaba dos directos, y si la local impactaba dos ganchos, Plata reaccionaba con una serie de tres o más puños.
A pesar de que la potencia de la visitante no es muy grande, más bien al contrario (3 triunfos antes del límite en 31 combates), las manos de Plata fueron tan nítidas y precisas que terminaron enrojeciendo e inflamando el rostro de Clavel, que padeció una hemorragia nasal. De todos modos, aunque Plata se imponía tanto boxeando con espacios como guerreando y la situación táctica para su rival era muy complicada, Clavel siguió atacando con determinación y bravura, logrando en ocasiones impactar algunos duros hooks (como en el octavo asalto) y generando tremendos intercambios.
Indudablemente, no se pudo negar el esfuerzo de Clavel, pero sus mejores éxitos fueron siempre contestados por una Plata que fue perseverante con sus precisas manos para no dejar dudas como visitante. Por ello, siendo posible argumentar a favor de Plata incluso en los mejores rounds de Clavel, aunque el choque fue emocionante y entretenido por sus excelentes cruces de golpes, la primera logró certificar una clara victoria e incluso finalmente dejó mermada a su contrincante.
Teniendo en cuenta que era la no favorita y que peleaba fuera de su país ante una invicta con cualidades que había recibido importante apoyo mediático (y que las cartulinas a favor de los locales en el respaldo fueron espantosas), el triunfo de Plata resultó enormemente meritorio de por sí. Pero es que además por momentos brilló y completamente anuló a una campeona mundial en plenitud con sus contragolpes y esquivas, consiguiendo también superarla cuando la batalla fue más peligrosa manteniendo el terreno e imponiendo su precisión.
En definitiva, Plata, que venía de ganar a la futura Salón de la Fama Yessica Bopp y que no pierde desde que la venció la sensacional Kenia Enríquez en 2017, es hoy por hoy la número 1 del peso minimosca femenino, tiene opciones claras de convertirse en campeona indiscutida si recibe el apoyo necesario y, en su mejor versión, podría ofrecerle una muy complicada noche a cualquier púgil alrededor de su peso.

Without having the possibility of a knockout or a knockdown due to her limited punch, and battling as a visitor an undefeated boxer with great promotional support, the Mexican Jéssica Nery Plata 29(3KO)-2 faced a more than difficult challenge. However, offering a truly stupendous performance, Plata earned a clear victory against Canadian Kim Clavel 16(3KO)-1, who bravely tried and tried again, generating an intense fight, but that fell short. The scores for Plata’s victory were a too close 96-94 and somewhat more reasonable cards of double 97-93.
The bout had two types of rounds. In some, Plata moved and used a sharp and effective jab to stop the advance from Clavel, whom she made miss with subtle shoulder movements and counterpunched with isolated hooks, uppercuts or straight hands followed by lateral steps. In the other rounds, when Clavel accelerated her steps to her maximum and reached with effort the medium-short distance, the boxers exchanged aggressively, but it was almost always Plata who got the best of it. That is to say, when Clavel connected a good left hook, the Mexican landed two straight hands, and if the local hit her opponent with two hooks, Plata reacted with a combination of three or more shots.
Despite the fact that the power of the visitor is not very great, rather the opposite (3 stoppage wins in 31 bouts), Plata’s hands were so clear and precise that they ended up reddening and swelling Clavel’s face, and the latter also suffered a nosebleed. In any case, although Plata prevailed both boxing with distance and brawling at close range and the tactical situation for her opponent was very complicated, Clavel continued to attack with determination and bravery, sometimes managing to land hard hooks (as in the eighth round) and generating excellent exchanges.
Undoubtedly, Clavel’s effort was great, but her best successes were always answered immediately by Plata, who persevered with her precise hands trying to leave no room for doubt as a visitor. Therefore, being possible to argue in favor of Plata even in Clavel’s best rounds, although the clash was exciting and entertaining due to its excellent exchanges, the former finally even wore down her opponent and managed to obtain a clear victory.
Taking into account that she was the underdog and that she was fighting outside her country against an undefeated fighter with qualities that had received significant support from the media (and that the scorecards in favor of the locals in the support were appalling), Plata’s triumph was very meritorious. And if it wasn’t enough, at times she shone and completely neutralized a world champion with her counterpunches and dodges, also managing to overcome her when the battle was more dangerous holding her ground and imposing her precision.
In short, Plata, who had just beaten the future Hall of Famer Yessica Bopp and who has not lost since the sensational Kenia Enríquez defeated her in 2017, is currently the number 1 female light flyweight, has clear chances to become undisputed champion if she receives the necessary support and, in her best version, she could offer a very difficult night for any fighter around her weight.
