Gervonta Davis derrotó por KOT al “Androide” García

El enfrentamiento entre Gervonta “Tank” Davis 28(26KO)-0 y Héctor Luis “El Androide” García 16(10KO)-1(1) pareció cerca de cancelarse días atrás cuando el primero de ambos fue arrestado por enésima vez, si bien súbitamente estos últimos obstáculos del invicto con la justicia se evaporaron. Algo similar pasó sobre el cuadrilátero, ya que tras perder Davis rounds y ganar otros trabajadamente (muchos tenían sus cartulinas igualadas antes del último tramo), la voluntad de García de combatir se diluyó repentinamente, llegándose a un KOT en el noveno round tras ser estremecido seriamente el púgil dominicano una sola vez.
Durante el primer tercio la pelea se desarrolló táctica y como un duelo de jabs en el que García, utilizando su precisión, pudo llegar a menudo contra un Davis que, como siempre, regaló los rounds iniciales con su bajísima cadencia de golpeo. Poco a poco el zurdo estadounidense fue aumentando el ritmo y, aunque se encontró con algunos buenos contragolpes en hooks, empezó a impactar manos peligrosas contra “El Androide”, que fue alcanzado por nítidos izquierdazos y ganchos diestros.
De todos modos, el dominicano resistió estos puños mejor que otros boxeadores. Y es que lidió casi sin inmutarse con directos al mentón que han derribado a muchos otros. Aun así, le estaban golpeando manos demasiado claras y potentes de forma regular y parecía que, de seguir así, tarde o temprano iba a terminar derrumbándose sobre la lona. Por el momento, García siguió siendo competitivo con su buen jab y sus contragolpes en directo y hook, que impactaba incluso tras recibir un fuerte puño.
En el octavo asalto hubo una pausa en el combate decretada por el árbitro debido a que los púgiles se estaban distrayendo por una riña que se estaba produciendo en las gradas. En la reanudación, las cosas se mantuvieron igual que antes hasta que, cerca del final del asalto, “Tank” conectó una izquierda (había sido precedida por varias otras) que dejó claramente tocado a García, que recibió un fuerte cruzado zurdo segundos antes del tañido. Quienes esperaban que la pugna se reanudase en el noveno episodio se quedaron con las ganas de ello, ya que hasta ahí llegó el esfuerzo del no favorito, que decidió no salir al noveno episodio alegando problemas de visión que han sido puestos en duda por muchos.
En cualquier caso, increíblemente dos de los jueces sólo le habían dado un asalto a García hasta el momento de la detención, así que realmente tampoco habría servido de nada que intentase luchar por el triunfo en el último tramo, menos aún contando con una pegada muy limitada.
Aunque en lo deportivo ahora el camino está despejado para que Tank Davis se enfrente a Ryan García en abril, la reincidencia delictiva del primero pone en duda que este termine siendo el mes definitivo para la pugna o que llegue a producirse este año. Es decir, aunque la carrera de Davis no va a terminar truncada por una larga condena, se ha comportado como un energúmeno demasiadas veces ya y el sistema judicial necesita darle un escarmiento para intentar fingir que no hay impunidad para los ricos y famosos, lo que se podría traducir en una estancia en prisión de unos meses que afectase la fecha del enfrentamiento ante Ryan García.

The bout between Gervonta «Tank» Davis 28(26KO)-0 and Héctor Luis «El Androide» García 16(10KO)-1(1) seemed close to being canceled days ago when the former was arrested for the umpteenth time, although suddenly these obstacles of the undefeated with justice evaporated. Something similar happened in the ring, since after Davis lost rounds and won others working hard (many having a close bout in the cards entering in the last stretch), García’s will to fight suddenly disappeared, ending the bout in a ninth round TKO after the Dominican boxer was seriously rocked only once.
During the first third, the fight was basically a tactical duel of jabs in which García, using his precision, was able to often hit Davis who, as always, lost the initial rounds due to a very low punch rate. Little by little the American southpaw increased the pace and, although he received some good counterpunches in hook, he began to land dangerous hands against “El Androide”, who was hit by hard straight lefts and right hooks.
Regardless, the Dominican withstood these punches better than other boxers as he dealt almost without flinching with straight hands to the chin that have knocked down many others. Still, he was being hit cleanly and powerfully on a regular basis so it seemed that, if he continued like that, sooner or later he was going to end up dropped hard on the canvas. However Garcia was still competitive with his good jab and his counterpunches in straight hand and hook, which he landed even after receiving a hard punch.
In the eighth round there was a pause in the fight ordered by the referee because the fighters were getting distracted by a brawl that was taking place outside the ring. After the restart, things remained the same as before until, near the end of the round, «Tank» landed a left hand (it had been preceded by several others) that clearly hurt García, who received a strong overhand seconds before the bell. Those who expected the fight to resume in the ninth round were disappointed, since the effort made by the underdog ended then. García refused to continue alleging vision problems that have been questioned by many.
In any case, unbelievably two of the judges had only given Garcia one round of the first eight, so there really wouldn’t have been any point in him trying to fight for the win in the last stretch, specially with his limited punching power.
Although from the sporting point of view the path is now clear for Tank Davis to face Ryan García in April, the former’s recidivism casts doubt on whether the bout will take place in that month or even in this year. That is to say, while Davis’s career isn’t going to be cut short by a lengthy sentence, he has behaved awfully outside the ring too many times already and the court system needs to give him a lesson trying to pretend there isn’t impunity for the rich and famous, which could translate into a stay in prison for a few months that could affect the date of the fight against Ryan García.
