El destacado contendiente wélter Jaron Ennis se convirtió en aspirante obligatorio de Spence con poco convincente actuación

Cuando a un boxeador que todavía no ha alcanzado ni siquiera su primera pelea mundialista se le compara con Sugar Ray Leonard, Roy Jones Jr., Floyd Mayweather, etc., no se le hace ningún favor. Y es que cuando tiene una actuación por debajo de las expectativas, las loas recibidas anteriormente sólo hacen que las críticas sean más duras.
Esto es lo que le está pasando al peso wélter estadounidense Jaron “Boots” Ennis 29(27KO)-0 que, pese a tener el potencial para tener una carrera realmente brillante, ha recibido halagos absolutamente desproporcionados (algunos le han calificado ya como el mejor boxeador de los últimos 25 años) que contrastaron el sábado con una poco convincente actuación ante el ucraniano Karen Chukhadzhian 21(11KO)-1. Con todo, finalmente Ennis se hizo con la victoria por decisión unánime y excesivas tarjetas de triple 120-108.
Chukhadzhian se centró en intentar evitar dar planos fáciles moviéndose constantemente y apoyándose en una cadencia de golpeo realmente baja para tratar de ofrecer los menos huecos posibles para recibir contras decisivas. De todos modos, esta táctica centrada básicamente en intentar sobrevivir no le permitió evitar que el veloz Ennis le asestase secos jabs, conectase peligrosos golpes de poder aquí y allá con directos diestros, cruzados, uppercuts, ganchos, etc. y se anotase todos los asaltos de la primera mitad.
Dicho esto, con un oponente que tenía como objetivo evitar el knockout, “Boots” no pudo lucir como otras veces, teniendo que dedicar muchos minutos a perseguir e intentar cortar el ring (algo que no siempre hizo bien), lo que terminó llevándole a frustrarse un tanto y precipitarse en sus ataques, recibiendo ciertos contragolpes en hook zurdo o directo. Con todo, aunque en ciertos momentos, como en el sexto asalto, Chukhadzhian enlazó buenas esquivas y sacó ciertos réditos del mal medido avance del local, el ucraniano estaba lejos de ofrecer el trabajo necesario para ganar.
Alcanzado el último tercio, Ennis empezó a golpear con insistencia al torso, mermando ligeramente a un Chukhadzhian que poco a poco empezó a dar oportunidades para puños nítidos, lo que el pegador invicto aprovechó para poner en ciertos apuros a su contrincante en el décimo asalto. Pero esta vez Ennis, que poseía un 90% de knockouts antes de este duelo, no logró terminar antes del límite, lo que no le hizo ningún favor.
Y es que, más allá de que no pudiese dar un golpe en la mesa ante un púgil sin experiencia del máximo nivel, ahora mismo la conversación que gira alrededor de la trayectoria de Ennis es si tiene lo que hace falta para derrotar a Errol Spence y Terence Crawford, dificilísimos retos para los que no sumó argumentos a su favor con su actuación ante Chukhadzhian. Eso por no hablar de que no respaldó precisamente las proyecciones sobre que será un campeón indiscutido en varias divisiones como algunos aseguran.
En cualquier caso, que no brillase espléndidamente ante Chukhadzhian no significa que no pueda lograr importantes éxitos, ni siquiera que sea imposible que derrote a Spence o Crawford, si bien todavía necesita pulir cosas en su boxeo y quizás no le quede mucho tiempo antes de su primera gran noche. Con la captura del título interino IBF, Ennis es ahora retador obligatorio de Spence y, si no es que se produce un Spence-Crawford o que el primero deja vacante su cinto, debería poder acceder al mundial ante “The Truth” este mismo año.

When a fighter who hasn’t even reached his first world title fight is compared to boxers such as Sugar Ray Leonard, Roy Jones Jr., Floyd Mayweather, etc., people are doing him a disservice. And that is because when the prospect has a performance below expectations, the praise received previously only makes the criticism harsher.
This is what is happening to American welterweight Jaron “Boots” Ennis 29(27KO)-0 who, despite having the potential to have a truly brilliant career, has received completely disproportionate praise (some have already described him as the best boxer of the last 25 years) that contrasted with an unconvincing performance against Ukrainian Karen Chukhadzhian 21(11KO)-1. However, Ennis obtained the victory by unanimous decision and too wide scorecards of triple 120-108.
Chukhadzhian focused on trying to avoid being hit easily by constantly moving and having a really low punch rate to offer as few holes as possible to receive decisive counters. However, this tactic focused mainly on trying to survive did not prevent the fast Ennis from landing sharp jabs and dangerous power shots here and there with right hands, hooks, uppercuts, etc. and winning round after round in the first half.
That said, facing an opponent looking to avoid a knockout, «Boots» couldn’t shine like he usually does, spending many minutes chasing Chukhadzhian and trying to cut the ring (something he didn’t always do well). This, in turn, frustrated him a little and made him rush in his attacks, receiving some counters in left hook or straight right. However, although at certain moments, such as in the sixth round, Chukhadzhian offered good consecutive dodges and took advantage from the local’s failed attacks, the Ukrainian was far from offering the necessary work to win.
In the last third, Ennis began to hit the body insistently, wearing down a bit Chukhadzhian, who little by little began to give opportunities for sharp punches, so the undefeated put his opponent in some trouble in the tenth round. But this time Ennis, who had a 90% knockout ratio going into this matchup, did not achieve the stoppage win, which didn’t do him any favors.
Beyond the fact that he couldn’t make a statement against a boxer without experience at the highest level, right now the conversation around Ennis’ career is whether he has what it takes to defeat Errol Spence and Terence Crawford, very difficult challenges for which he did not add arguments in his favor with his performance against Chukhadzhian. Not to mention that he didn’t exactly back the projections made by some regarding that he will be an undisputed champion in various divisions.
In any case, the fact that he did not dazzle against Chukhadzhian does not mean that he cannot achieve important successes or that it is impossible for him to beat Spence or Crawford, although he still needs to hone certain things in his boxing and he may not have much time left before his first big night. With the interim IBF title conquered on Saturday, Ennis became Spence’s mandatory challenger and, if the Spence-Crawford fight does not take place or the former doesn’t vacate, he should access the world championship against «The Truth» this year.
