The best fights of the remainder of the year and the beginning of the next one (20-7/12-1/2022-23)

In the days that remain until the end of the year there will be more mentionable fights than in other seasons, although these will be separeted and there will not be large concentrations of events. In any case, with a considerable number of bouts, among which are some interesting ones, and a unification on the last day of the year, boxing fans will be able to entertain themselves before reaching a total lack of activity that will be ended with the first two good cards of 2023.

Tuesday, December 20
We start in San Fernando, Philippines, where the young light flyweight John Paul Gabunilas 8(6KO)-1, 29th WBC, will look to get closer to the top 15 and gain some quality experience against his compatriot Jesse “Little Giant” Espinas 20(11KO)-5 (1), whose only recent losses have been close and against opponents like the dangerous Esneth Domingo, the WBO number 1 Mark Vicelles and the former world challenger Edward Heno.

Wednesday, December 21
Moving on to the Sony Hall in New York, United States, the American national bronze medalist Anthony “The Magician” Sims Jr. 22(20KO)-1 will seek to keep recovering from his unexpected loss against Roamer Angulo facing the seasoned Antonio Todd 14(8KO)-6(2), who this year beat in an upset the former ranked boxer Hugo Centeno Jr. and lost by questionable split decision to the undefeated Connor Coyle.

On the other hand, again in the Philippines, specifically in the city of Naga, former world minimumweight champion Victorio «Vicious» Saludar 21(11KO)-6(2), 6th WBA, will try to return to winning ways against his compatriot Ariston “Double A” Aton 9(5KO)-5(1), a fighter of a much lower level than his and whom theoretically he should defeat without problems.

Thursday, December 22
On this day, the promotional company Angels – A will offer an event from the Titov Arena in Barnaul, Russia, in which the tall super middleweight Artysh Lopsan 9(6KO)-1(1)-1 will look to take his good winning streak to eight victories (among which is the one he obtained as a visitor over Olympic bronze medalist Vijender Singh) defeating Vasily Shtyk 5(4KO)-4(2). This is a rematch of a an exciting and hard clash in which Lopsan won by TKO but was rocked and had to work hard to win.
In addition, undefeated heavyweight Arslan Iallyev 13(8KO)-0 will try to knock out the Brazilian Igor Macedo 10(10KO)-1(1) in fewer rounds than the ten needed by former ranked fighter Sergey Kuzmin.

Friday, December 23
The year 2022 has two important women’s bouts left, one of which will take place at the Club Sarmiento in Resistencia, Argentina, televised by TyC Sports. In it, two former titlists with more than ten victories in world championships such as future Hall of Famer Marcela Eliana «La Tigresa» Acuña 51(20KO)-8(1)-2 and Débora «La Gurisa» Dionicius 34(6KO)-4 will meet in a good duel that will have the WBO interim super bantamweight belt at stake and that will be a rematch of a fight won by split decision by Dionicius a year ago.
On the undercard, super lightweight Fabián Andrés Maidana 18(13KO)-2 will look to bounce back from his highly controversial loss in Mexico by facing Carlos Daniel Aquino 19(14KO)-13(6)-2.

On the other hand, at the Palahockey Guglielmo Fanticini in Reggio Emilia, Italy, an interesting Italian national championship will take place, as veteran Carlo De Novellis 9(0KO)-4-1 will defend his middleweight belt for the first time against the young Giovanni “Nino” Rossetti 10(3KO)-1, who faces his biggest test to date.

Monday, December 26
The Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan, will close its very busy season with an event headlined by a Japanese national championship. At stake will be the vacant super bantamweight title, and the challengers will be two veterans boxers like Ryoichi Tamura 15(7KO)-6-1 and Gaku Furuhashi 28(16KO)-9(1)-2. They already met in 2019, and the bout ended with a close victory for Furuhashi, who will be the favorite again in the rematch.

On this same day, at the Kursaal Bern in Bern, Switzerland, undefeated middleweight Ramadan Hiseni 15(5KO)-0-1 will try to recover morale after his draw against Nizar Trimech, and continue his development, battling the competent Frenchman Ismael Seck 9(4KO)-7-2, who fought to a draw against reigning French champion Diego Natchoo and lost narrowly in the UK against River Wilson-Bent.

Thursday, December 29
Another rematch will take place at the Lucerna Palace in Prague, Czech Republic, between two journeymen with international experience such as Vasil Ducar 12(10KO)-6(1)-1 and Vladimir Reznicek 11(5KO)-4(1)-2, who will meet again four and a half years after competing in a national cruiserweight championship that ended in a draw. In the second fight it seems that Ducar, who in recent years has offered several very meritorious performances on the road despite his defeats, should be able to achieve a convincing victory.

Also on that Thursday, Chinese Olympian Bin Lu 2(1KO)-1(1), who saw a too fast and ambitious professional advance cut short losing by TKO his second bout (in which he faced Carlos Cañizales), will continue a new attempt in the paid ranks (he began it last October) facing the young Thai, former WBA secondary titleholder, Yutthana Kaensa 23(10KO)-4(3) in a super flyweight clash.

Friday, December 30
On the penultimate day of the year, an American boxer with projection like super welterweight Peter Dobson 16(9KO)-0 will face his first matchup outside his country fighting for a WBC minor title at the Mao Zedong Stadium in Zanzibar, Tanzania, against the local Hassan Mwakinyo 20(14 KO)-3(2). Until a few months ago Mwakinyo was well rated, since to his UK victory over Eggington was added a long winning streak, but his disappointing performance against Liam Smith in September makes Dobson clear favorite to win.

A few hours later, at the Casino in Buenos Aires, Argentina, televised by TyC Sports, Uruguayan lightweight Maira Moneo 11(2KO)-1 will face a decisive test taking on (in a WBA eliminator) a former champion with enormous quality experience such as the Argentinian Erica Farías 27(10KO)-6, who in her last five bouts has faced Jessica McCaskill twice, Mikaela Mayer once and Sandy Ryan twice, ending two of the fights with controversial defeats and one with victory.
On the same bill, two boxers with long winning streaks such as Agustín Quintana 18(13KO)-1-1 and Juan Javier Carrasco 15(8KO)-1(1) will face off in another well-matched duel, in this case with the South American lightweight belt at stake.

Saturday, December 31
We have now reached the last three dates, which will be the most important. As has been a tradition in his recent career, WBO world super flyweight champion Kazuto Ioka 29(15KO)-2 will close the year fighting on the last day of the season at the Ota-City General Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan. However, this time the duel will have a special meaning, since it will be a unification against the WBA monarch, the American Joshua Franco 18(8KO)-1(1)-2.

Although Franco in theory does not have the same level than his opponent, something that became clear with his controversial fights against Andrew Moloney and his close clashes against Óscar Negrete, he is a brave, tough boxer who could be entering his peak. On the other hand, Ioka has narrowly won three of his last five bouts and, despite his cunning, he does not always properly distribute his work. Thus, this could be a highly contested and entertaining clash in which the visitor has some chances of winning despite Ioka will be justly considered the favorite.

Friday, January 6
Japan will also be the country where the first great evening of the year will take place, since two interesting world minimumweight championships will headline an evening at the Edion Arena in Osaka. It’s worth noting that it seems possible that the winners will later unify their belts.

In one of the fights, the best prospect in the division, the Japanese Ginjiro Shigeoka 8(6KO)-0, will seek to turn the projections into reality by dethroning the IBF monarch, the Mexican Daniel «Cejitas» Valladares 26(15KO)-3-1, who, given the difficulties he suffered against René Mark Cuarto, probably will not be able to deal with the effectiveness of the undefeated challenger.
In the other world championship bout, the WBO champion Masataka Taniguchi 16(11KO)-3 will also face a very dangerous defense against the Filipino Melvin Jerusalem 19(11KO)-2, who lost narrowly against Chayaphon Moonsri (also known as Wanheng Menayothin). Perhaps Taniguchi will end up winning the clash in the long run due to his strength, punch and physical condition, but it should be a contested and very demanding battle.

Also at the event, the WBO number 12 and WBA number 15 super featherweight Yoshimitsu Kimura 14(9KO)-2-1 will attempt to improve his ranking by fighting for a WBO minor title in a well-matched duel against the OPBF champion Masanori Rikiishi 12(7KO)- 1(1), while young super flyweight Ayumu Hanada 8(6KO)-1-1 will face a hard test against Panamanian puncher Azael Villar 19(15KO)-1(1)-3, who comes from beating in just one round former world champion Ryo Miyazaki.

Saturday, January 7
Finally, we end the article with the biggest evening that will take place in the stretch covered in this article. In the Capitol One Arena in Washington, United States, PBC will offer a PPV event that will be headlined by a good lightweight clash between two undefeated fighters as Gervonta «Tank» Davis 27(25KO)-0 and Héctor Luis «El Androide» Garcia 16(10KO)-0. Given that Davis has a huge advantage in punching power and Garcia, in addition to being somewhat overrated, is moving up a division, «Tank» should be able to win by stoppage, although he needs to avoid giving away so many rounds with a very low punch output, as he has done in his last fights.

In the co-main event, one of the best pound-for-pound prospects, the avoided American welterweight Jaron “Boots” Ennis 29(27KO)-0, will seek to secure a world title opportunity by fighting for an IBF interim title against Ukrainian Karen Chukhadzhian 21(11KO)-1, who does not have the technical level or the explosiveness necessary to prevent being defeated by Ennis.

Also in the evening, agile American welterweight Rashidi «Speedy» Ellis 24(15KO)-0 will face a good test against Venezuelan-Colombian puncher Roimán «Flaco de Oro» Villa 25(24KO)-1, who beat undefeated Janelson Figueroa in an upset in his US debut in September, and former two-division world champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade 31(19KO)-0 will face his umpteenth inconsequential tune-up bout in his super middleweight debut against countryman Demond “D’Bestatit” Nicholson 26(22KO)-4(2)-1.
