Xander Zayas venció a “Laberinto” Salazar con actuación no demasiado convincente

De los tres invictos prospectos de Top Rank que participaron en el respaldo principal del Teófimo-Sandor, el que logró un triunfo menos convincente fue el joven puertorriqueño Xander Zayas 15(10KO)-0, que no ofreció ni mucho menos su mejor versión pero que, aun así, derrotó por muy amplia decisión unánime (80-72 y doble 79-73) al mexicano Alexis “Laberinto” Salazar 24(9KO)-5(1).
Desde la distancia media Salazar intentó conectar sus golpes, pero todavía en el primer round un gancho zurdo precedido por un directo diestro le hizo caer sobre las cuerdas, aunque el árbitro no realizó cuenta. En cualquier caso, Zayas tenía mucha más velocidad, reflejos explosividad y técnica, por lo que pudo evitar la mayor parte de los ataques de su contrincante con esquivas y bloqueos y buscar impactar hooks de mano adelantada arriba y abajo además de golpes rectos.
Como los golpes de Zayas eran por mucho los más claros y frecuentes, se fue anotando los asaltos de manera evidente, pero su actuación no fue brillante. Quizás fue debido a que Salazar tiene un estilo errático e incómodo que no le permitió desplegar bien su boxeo ofensivo o quizás todavía tiene que mejorar mucho su control de la distancia y su selección de golpes, pero el hecho es que dependió demasiado de sus ventajas físicas para, con salteadas acciones aisladas y mejores resultados en los cruces de golpes, vencer por decisión una pugna ante un púgil que fue batido en sólo tres rounds por Carlos Adames.
A pesar de que su actuación no fue para enmarcarla, el hecho es que igualmente logró un triunfo clarísimo y que sólo tiene 20 años. Por lo tanto, si resulta algo completamente normal que un prospecto tenga una noche más floja de lo habitual sin que ello resulte preocupante, más margen se le debe dar a un Zayas que ni siquiera perdió dos rounds y al que le quedan muchos años antes de entrar en el pico de su rendimiento.

Salazar tried to connect his hands from the middle distance, but in the first round a left hook preceded by a straight right made him fall on the ropes, although the referee did not count. In any case, Zayas had much more speed, reflexes, explosiveness and ability, so he was able to avoid most of his opponent’s attacks with dodges and blocks and look to land lead hooks up and down as well as straight punches.
Since Zayas’ shots were by far more clear and frequent, he clearly won the rounds, but his performance was far from brilliant. Perhaps it was because Salazar’s awkward and erratic style prevented him from deploying his offensives well, or perhaps he still has a lot to improve on his distance control and punch selection. But the fact is that he relied too much on his physical advantages for, with isolated actions and better results in the exchanges, defeating by decision a fighter who was beaten in only three rounds by Carlos Adames.
Despite the fact that his performance was not excellent, the fact is that he still scored a very clear victory and that he is only 20 years old. Therefore, if it is completely normal for a prospect to have a weaker night than usual without it being worrying, Zayas performance was even less alarming, since he didn’t even lose two rounds and he is many years away from entering his peak.
