Prograis controló tácticamente su choque ante Zepeda antes de batirlo por KOT y coronarse campeón mundial WBC superligero

Su nuevo gran momento se hizo esperar más de tres años y medio, pero anoche el excampeón mundial estadounidense Regis “Rougarou” Prograis 28(24KO)-1 volvió a coronarse monarca derrotando a su compatriota José “Chon” Zepeda 35(27KO)-3(2). Además, Prograis no sólo venció sino que lo hizo asestándole la derrota más clara de su carrera a Zepeda e incluso haciéndolo parecer fácil durante largos tramos. El triunfo de Prograis llegó por KOT en el undécimo episodio.
Los boxeadores se tomaron con calma el enfrentamiento, haciendo pruebas con sus jabs, fintando constantemente y sacando muy eventuales golpes de poder, siendo algo más frecuentes inicialmente los de Zepeda. De todos modos, aunque tuvo que esperar un poco para ajustar su timing ante la ventaja en alcance de Zepeda y una vez más se confió demasiado, por ejemplo realizando esquivas con las manos bajas, gradualmente Prograis empezó a asestar peligrosos izquierdazos que en el tercer round sacudieron a su contrincante.
Si Prograis hubiese cargado al ataque seguramente habría logrado éxitos decisivos pronto, pero prefirió seguir calmadamente esquivando y volviendo a esquivar moviendo la cintura mientras avanzaba pausadamente conectando potentísimos directos de mano adelantada (que provocaron un corte en el ojo derecho de Zepeda) y sacando esporádicos pero muy fuertes directos y ganchos. Ante todo esto, Zepeda estaba teniendo una actuación realmente floja, ya que pronto fue sacado del combate tácticamente hablando, no dejó volar sus manos y ante los ataques más duros de su rival se replegó sin ofrecer oposición.
Habiendo martilleado con muchísimos jabs y habiendo dado muestras de su potencia con sus salteados golpes contundentes ante un “Chon” que no estaba ni siquiera cerca de él en cuanto a nivel, pasada la mitad era el momento de que Prograis buscase el knockout cargando al ataque. Pero contrariamente siguió imponiéndose de manera táctica, moviéndose y cediendo la iniciativa sin ningún gesto que evidenciase que quería acabar con su contrincante antes del límite. Hubo que esperar hasta el décimo episodio para que Prograis, tras ser movido por un directo, se volcase claramente al ataque y castigase de forma seguida a un Zepeda que recibió peligrosos hooks.
Finalmente, en el undécimo round, Prograis terminó la faena y, después de dañar a Zepeda con un izquierdazo, le atacó con una dura andanada de ganchos sin respuesta hasta derribarlo y llevarlo al KOT.
En los últimos años Prograis ha sido injustamente ninguneado a pesar de que resulta claro para cualquiera que le vea combatir que tiene un talento desbordante y cualidades para conseguir excelentes logros. Con todo, ahora a “Rougarou” no se le podrá pasar por alto durante más tiempo, ya que es campeón mundial WBC del peso superligero y ha capturado el cinturón haciendo parecer a Zepeda un rival sencillo, así que ahora le toca a su promotor estar a la altura de las circunstancias y buscarle los mayores combates posibles, entre ellos unificaciones, para intentar mejorar su prestigio lo máximo posible.

He had to wait for more than three and a half years before a new big moment in his career, but last night American former world champion Regis «Rougarou» Prograis 28(24KO)-1 was crowned titlist again defeating his compatriot José «Chon» Zepeda 35(27KO)-3(2). In addition, Prograis not only won, but he did it by dealing the clearest defeat of his career to Zepeda and even making it look easy for long stretches. Finally Prograis’ victory came by TKO in the eleventh round.
The boxers approached the bout calmly, testing with their jabs, constantly feinting and landing very occasional power punches, Zepeda’s being somewhat more frequent initially. Still, although he had to wait a bit to adjust his timing in front of Zepeda’s reach advantage and once again became overconfident, for example performing dodges with his hands low, Prograis gradually began to land dangerous left hands than in the third round shook his opponent.
If Prograis had charged forward, he would surely have achieved decisive successes soon, but he preferred to continue calmly dodging moving his waist while slowly advancing, landing powerful jabs (which cut Zepeda’s right eye) and connecting sporadic but very hard straight shots and hooks. But on the contrary, he continued to impose his tactical prowess, moving and giving up the initiative without showing that he wanted to finish the bout before the final bell. It was necessary to wait until the tenth episode for Prograis, after being shook by a straight shot, to turn clearly to the attack and immediately punish Zepeda, who received very dangerous hooks.
Lastly, in the eleventh round, Prograis finished the job and, after hurting Zepeda with a left hand, attacked him with a hard barrage of unanswered hooks until he dropped him and obtained the TKO.
In recent years Prograis has been unfairly overlooked despite the fact that it is clear to anyone who sees him fight that he has a lot of talent and enough qualities to obtain excellent achievements. However, now “Rougarou” can no longer be overlooked, as he is the WBC super lightweight world champion and has captured the belt making Zepeda look like an easy opponent. So now it is up to his promoter to look for the biggest possible fights, including unifications, to try to improve his prestige as much as possible.
