PalaBoni, Mantua, Italia.

Vincenzo Picardi

Vincenzo Picardi once again beat Zara by narrow decision and captured the European Union bantamweight title (Video of the evening)

Pala Boni, Mantua, Italy. European Union championship for the vacant bantamweight title.

Without a doubt, the Italian Vincenzo Picardi 9(1KO)-0 will have great memories of his clashes against Cristian Zara 9(3KO)-2, while for the latter it will be the opposite. This is because the two victories that Picardi has achieved in these matches have served him to advance significantly in his career, since in the first bout he established himself as Italian champion and in the second, last night, he became European Union titlist with a fair unanimous decision win and scores of 115-114, 115-114 and 115-113.

In the first round, Zara touched the canvas twice when he lost his balance trying to avoid blows to the torso that hit him, a situation in which many referees would have ruled a knockdown. However, on this occasion Zara did not receive any count, something that did not prevent Picardi from having a better first third, overcoming the spaced jabs and tepid left hooks of his opponent with isolated but more eye-catching power shots, especially with straight hands.

In an essentially tactical clash, the veteran (with a lot of amateur experience) Picardi had advantage due to his cunning, timing and ability. This isn’t to say that Zara was lacking in skill, since at times he did offer good dodges while moving, handled distance appropriately with his footwork and found openings for opportune hands. But although he made the bout generally contested, Picardi’s ability to distribute his successes during the round with accurate left hooks or right hands allowed him to take the lead in a fight which often had more defense than attack.

Even so, after the half point, although there was a certain moment in which Zara seemed a bit hurt, Picardi lost a lot of precision and his opponent took advantage of it to land short straight shots and counter lefts hooks. In this way, Zara hindered the progress of his opponent, who also seemed to deal worse than him with several clashes of heads, and was able to shorten the distance in the cards quite a bit. But in the final stretch, Picardi found the way for his straight hands again and Zara failed to maintain his previous accuracy, so the former narrowly prevailed one more time over this boxer.

As he made his professional debut at the age of 36, Picardi has no time to waste, and in the first quarter of 2023 he should seek to get into the ring, at least, in a voluntary defense. For the rest, his next step should be to do everything possible to try to reach the European championship against his compatriot Alessio Lorusso, who currently holds the belt. Apart from the fact that this fight should not be very difficult to make, perhaps it would serve both to better show what they are made of, since the pressure work from the astute Picardi (who this time was much less hasty than in the first duel against Zara) would offer an interesting match for the elusive, mobile and technical boxing of Lorusso.

New champion of Italy
In the co-feature there was an Italian championship for the vacant flyweight belt in which the resistant Tommaso Melito 5(1KO)-8(1)-1 looked chinny and lost in the second round against Samir El Kadimi 7(5KO)-1- 1.

In a tactically chaotic bout, after some failed attempts by both, El Kadimi staggered his opponent with his straight shots and hooks, insisting then with more attacks. Initially these new offensives did not have great results and Melito recovered a bit, although a little later El Kadimi rocked his opponent again with a hook. After this very negative first round, things got even worse for Melito in the second, since a counter left hook hurt him and later an overhand right took him to the canvas. The fight resumed, although Melito was in no condition to continue, so that, after receiving a few more punches, he staggered again and the referee ended the clash.
