Después de haber tenido actuaciones meritorias terminadas en derrotas ante púgiles como Dalton Smith, Abraham Nova o Samuel Molina, entre otros, Brian Peláez 13(3KO)-6(1) encaró en la noche del viernes su primera pelea por un título relevante. Lo hizo disputando el nacional español ante el púgil de origen liberiano Gadatamen Taylor 5(0KO)-11(1)-1, que pese a los malos números de su récord ofreció una valerosa y agresiva actuación, aunque terminó con KOT en el noveno round.
El zurdo Taylor optó por presionar con intensidad buscando fijar a su oponente en las cuerdas y golpearle con combinaciones de ganchos abajo y con directos de izquierda. De todas formas, pronto Peláez fue ajustando su precisión para, entre sus desplazamientos cercanos al ensogado o directamente apoyado en él, encontrar huecos para nítidos contragolpes en directo diestro, cruzados y ganchos zurdos, uppercuts, cruzados diestros, etc.
Así, Peláez se situó por delante en las cartulinas de los jueces, pero Taylor no dejó de atacar intentando menoscabar a su contrincante, produciéndose buenos intercambios en los que el combativo no favorito llegó con voluntariosas manos, aunque se expuso y recibió como réplica más significativos y contundentes golpes de poder. Con todo, aunque Taylor recibió puños que sacudieron su cabeza, siguió y siguió trabajando, logrando con su persistencia impresionar de más a los jueces, que lo tenían sólo un punto por debajo tras el séptimo round a pesar de que parecía que iba perdiendo con más diferencia (triple 67-66).
Esto espoleó a Taylor, que en el octavo round atacó con más determinación aún, si bien en el episodio posterior, un cruzado zurdo y un directo diestro de Peláez dejaron tocado a su contrincante, que se tambaleó. La reacción de Taylor al ser hostigado fue realmente mala, puesto que, en lugar de agarrarse o de poner una rodilla en la lona, corrió despavorido por el ring, incluso dándole la espalda al rival, hasta que finalmente Peláez lo encerró en las cuerdas y tiró una combinación que, al no encontrar respuesta, llevó al árbitro a parar el encuentro
Por un lado, aunque durante la mayoría de los rounds mostró garra y gran preparación física, que Taylor accediese al campeonato de España del peso ligero, aunque fuese como remplazo, muestra o que la comisión española no está haciendo bien su trabajo o que el boxeo español no está tan en una segunda época dorada como algunos dicen, o quizás puede que ambas cosas. Pero sólo hay que conocer el palmarés ante oposición nacional de Taylor para ver que el acceso al campeonato de España es un excesivo premio, más aún midiéndose a un Peláez que ya le había derrotado por decisión este mismo marzo.
Dicho esto, y aunque ganó como se preveía el favorito, ambos ofrecieron una buena actuación y un entretenido combate, que servirá al nuevo campeón Peláez para coger aire después de demasiados combates difíciles y apuntar en 2023 a un duelo ante un insigne retador ante el que intentar consolidarse como titular y demostrar que no sólo se ha coronado por enfrentarse a un rival muy por debajo del nivel de la cumbre nacional.

After having had meritorious performances that ended in defeats against fighters such as Dalton Smith, Abraham Nova or Samuel Molina, among others, Brian Peláez 13(3KO)-6(1) faced his first fight for a relevant title on Friday night. He did it by fighting for the Spanish national belt against the fighter of Liberian descent Gadatamen Taylor 5(0KO)-11 (1)-1, who despite the bad numbers of his record offered a courageous and aggressive performance, although he ended beaten by TKO in the ninth round.
The southpaw Taylor decided to press hard looking to pin his opponent on the ropes and hit him with combinations of hooks down and straight lefts. In any case, Peláez soon began to adjust his precision so that, between his movements close to the ropes or directly leaning on them, he found holes for clear counters in straight right hand, left hook, uppercut, right overhand, etc.
Thus, Peláez took the lead on the judges’ cards, but Taylor did not stop attacking trying to weaken his opponent, and there were good exchanges in which the combative underdog landed hands full of will, although he exposed himself and received more significant reply through forceful power punches. Still, despite Taylor took punches that shook his head, he kept advancing and working and his persistence overimpressed the judges, who had him trailing by just one point after the seventh round even though it looked like he was losing clearly (triple 67-66).
This motivated Taylor even more, so in the eighth round he attacked with even more determination, although in the next round, a left hook and a straight right hand from Peláez staggered his opponent. Taylor’s reaction in the face of adversity was really bad, since, instead of holding on or putting a knee on the canvas, he ran terrified around the ring, even turning his back on his opponent, until finally Peláez cornered him and threw a combination that, finding no answer, led the referee to stop the match.
On the one hand, although during most of the rounds he showed grit and great shape, the fact that Taylor accessed the Spanish lightweight championship, even as a replacement, shows either that the Spanish commission is not doing its job properly or that Spanish boxing it’s not quite in a second golden age as some say, or perhaps both. It is only necessary to know Taylor’s record against national opposition to see that a fight for the Spanish belt was an excessive prize, even more so when he lost against Peláez by decision this March.
That said, and although the favorite won as expected, both offered a good performance and an entertaining bout, which will serve the new champion Peláez to catch his breath after too many difficult fights and aim in 2023 for a duel against a distinguished challenger against whom try to strengthen himself as belt holder and show that he has not only been crowned due to the fact that he faced a boxer well below the level of the national top.
