Gervonta Davis y Ryan García llegan a acuerdo para enfrentamiento a falta de resolución del juicio contra “Tank”

Una y otra vez, boxeadores relevantes han señalado que ciertos combates eran irrealizables debido a que sus oponentes eran parte de un grupo promocional/audiovisual diferente al suyo. Es cierto que, en términos prácticos, a menudo las pugnas entre compañías dibujan unos límites claros, pero cuando existe interés real por parte de los promotores, todas esas barreras terminan siendo inexistentes, habiéndose pactado múltiples duelos entre competidores directos como, por ejemplo, los enfrentamientos Fury-Wilder, organizados en colaboración entre Top Rank y PBC.
Esto ha quedado claro de nuevo en las últimas horas, puesto que Gervonta Davis y Ryan García han alcanzado un acuerdo para enfrentarse en 2023 en una pelea a peso pactado en 136 libras (61,7 kg), siendo los representantes respectivos de estos boxeadores dos “enemigos” como Premier Boxing Champions y Golden Boy Promotions.
Al margen de las pugnas entre promotoras, que éstas tengan acuerdos vigentes con grupos audiovisuales opuestos, tampoco ha resultado un problema, acordándose que Showtime estará a cargo de la retransmisión y que tanto este grupo como DAZN ofrecerán la velada por PPV en Estados Unidos a través de sus plataformas.
Así, ha quedado totalmente claro que muchos de los obstáculos en las negociaciones son perfectamente superables si se pone algo de voluntad para vencerlos en lugar de usarlos como un escudo para proteger intereses. Sin embargo, aunque todo esto ofrece una lección positiva en general al mundo del boxeo y el choque entre García y Davis es uno de los más esperados por los aficionados, que se termine materializando tendrá todavía ciertos condicionantes.
Primero, Davis tendrá que vencer un rodaje contra un rival por confirmar al que se enfrentará el 7 de enero, y segundo tendrá que salir airoso de su juicio por el accidente de tráfico que provocó y del que se fugó.
Es decir, aunque Davis no pasará lo que le queda de su carrera en la cárcel como algunos dijeron en su momento (la condena máxima a la que se expone ha sido ya rebajada de 7 años a 4 años y seguramente no se le pondrá la máxima), el juez quiso dar ejemplo y no aceptó un acuerdo de culpabilidad que habría dejado irse a “Tank” prácticamente sin recibir castigo. Por ello, Davis tendrá que acometer un juicio en febrero cuyo resultado podría afectar a la fecha del combate y, en el peor de los casos para los intereses de los púgiles, incluso llevar a un aplazamiento.

Time and time again, prominent boxers have pointed out that certain bouts were not feasible because their opponents were part of a different promotional group. It is true that, in practical terms, the fights between companies often draw clear limits, but when there is real interest on the part of the promoters, all these barriers end up being almost non-existent, as there are many precedents of fights organized by direct competitors, such in the case of the Fury-Wilder matchups, offered in collaboration between Top Rank and PBC.
This has become clear again in the last hours, since Gervonta Davis and Ryan García have reached an agreement to meet in 2023 at a catch weight of 136 pounds (61.7 kg), despite the fact their respective representatives are two “enemies” like Premier Boxing Champions and Golden Boy Promotions.
Apart from the fights between promoters, the fact that they have current agreements with opposing broadcasters, has not been a problem either. Showtime will be in charge of the telecast and the PPV could be purchased through Showtime and DAZN platforms.
Thus, it has become completely clear that many of the obstacles in the negotiations are perfectly superable if some will is put into overcoming them instead of using them as a shield to protect interests. However, although all this offers a positive lesson in general to the world of boxing and the clash between García and Davis is one of the most anticipated by fans, there will still be certain conditions for it to take place.
First, Davis will have to win a tune-up, against an opponent to be confirmed, that he will face on January 7, and second, he will have to deal with his trial for the traffic accident that he caused and from which he fled.
That is to say, although Davis will not spend the remainder of his career in jail as some said at the time (the maximum sentence he could receive has already been reduced from 7 years to 4 years, and surely he will not receive the maximum sentence), the judge did not accept a plea arrangement that would have let “Tank” go virtually unpunished. For this reason, Davis will have to undertake a trial in February whose result could affect the date of the fight and, in the worst case for the interests of the fighters, even lead to a postponement.
