The best fights of the weekend (11/17-19/2022)

Daniel Pi
@BastionBoxing

We are getting very close to the end of the season. In fact, within a month the biggest promotional companies will have finished their schedules. Thus, the number of events will accumulate in this and the following weeks. However, no pound-for-pound fighters or big stars will fight this weekend, and only one reigning world champion will step into the ring.

Thursday, November 17
We start our journey at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan, where once again two interesting Japanese national championships will take place.

Special attention will have to be paid to the duel for the vacant Japanese minimumweight title, since it will feature the prospect Yudai Shigeoka 5(3KO)-0, brother of a rising star in the division like Ginjiro Shigeoka who will seek to follow in the footsteps of his relative fighting Tatsuro Nakashima 11(7KO)-3(2)-1. Apart from his defeat against Ginjiro, Nakashima has only been beaten by current world champion Masataka Taniguchi and by world title challenger Kai Ishizawa, so there is no doubt that he has quality experience and that only boxers with a high level are capable of defeat him.

In the other Japanese championship, lightweight titlist Shu Utsuki 11(9KO)-0 will try to achieve the biggest win of his career to date in a hard test against puncher Jirolian Riku 14(13KO)-3(1), who comes from scoring five stoppage victories in his last six wins.

Also on Thursday, the Duban Casino in Durban, South Africa, will be the venue for an event where the 8th WBC, 10th IBF and 13th WBO super bantamweight Ludumo “9mm” Lamati 20(10KO)-0-1 will close out his 2022 season, before a year which should be crucial in his career, facing the Filipino Mark Anthony Geraldo 38(19KO)-11(2)-3, a fighter who has battled rivals such as Takuma Inoue or Nordine Oubaali and who last year lost by narrow difference against the undefeated prospect Carl Jammes Martin.
On the same card, super lightweight Xolisani Ndongeni 30(17KO)-2(1) will try to take his winning streak to five against former world title challenger Apinun Khongsong 20(17KO)-2(2).

Friday, November 18
Friday’s biggest title fight will be the European middleweight championship between titleholder Anderson “Ladoune” Prestot 25(13KO)-2(1) and former champion Matteo “Il Giaguaro” Signani 31(11KO)-6(1)-3, which will take place at the Seven Sporting Club in Savignano sul Rubicone, Italy, broadcast by RAI Sport 2. In any case, this rematch of a duel ended with Prestot winning by technical decision, is a championship of limited consequences, as Signani is very close to retirement and his opponent does not seem to belong to the top of the division, despite being ranked 14th IBF.

In the support, two prospects such as super bantamweight Vincenzo La Femina 11(6KO)-0 and middleweight Giovanni Sarchioto 5(5KO)-0 will face developmental matches, respectively, against Venezuelan Héctor Betancourt 14(11KO)-5 and the Spaniard José Manuel López Clavero 16(5KO)-19(6)-1.

As for the best-known boxer who will fight on the day, this will be the Mexican former world champion Francisco «El Bandido» Vargas 27(19KO)-4(3)-2, who will fight at the Centro Cívico in Ecatepec, Mexico. However, Vargas is on the verge of retirement and his opponent in this lightweight clash will be a fighter who hasn’t won a bout since 2020 as Guillermo “Borrego” Ávila 19(14KO)-12(7).
On the undercard, the competent “Jacky” Calvo 16(1KO)-7(1)-2 will face an opponent even younger than her as Angela Nolasco 9(0KO)-5-1 and super welterweight Luis Vidales 21(9KO)-8(2) and Gustavo «Vitaminas» Garibay 17(9KO)-15(9)-2 will face each other in a rematch (the first fight was narrowly won by Vidales).

On the other hand, Thompson Boxing will offer one more of its evenings broadcast through YouTube from the DoubleTree Hotel in Ontario, United States. On this occasion, the main event will feature welterweight Louie López 12(4KO)-1-1, a boxer with aspirations but who has had several performances below expectations who will serve as decisive test for the undefeated Adrián Gutiérrez 12(6KO)-0-1, who has had a more stable advance but against lower level opponents.

In addition, these other clashes will take place on Friday:
-At the Complexe Sportif du Lido in Sète, France, undefeated super lightweight Bastien Ballesta 24(5KO)-0-1 will try to break into the IBF ranking fighting for a minor title against the Venezuelan Samuel “Pana” González 23(13KO)-8(1) and bantamweight Mike Esteves 10(0KO)-1(1) will begin to test the continental scene against Spaniard Jonathan Santana 9(1KO)-3(1).
-At the Grupa Azoty Arena in Pulawy, Poland, broadcast by TVP Sport, welterweight Michal Lesniak 16(4KO)-1-1 will face a risky fight against the undefeated Czech Lukas Dekys 7(3KO)-0, who knocked out Michal Syrowatka in three rounds a year ago. Also, undefeated middleweight Stanislaw Gibadlo 8(0KO)-0 will face Tomasz Nowicki 10(3KO)-1(1).
-In Teplice, Czech Republic, flyweight prospect Alexas Kubicki 4(0KO)-0 will face her biggest fight to date against Mexican former world title challenger Isabel “La Catrina” Millán 29(9KO)-8(2)-2.
-At the Polideportivo Fray Mamerto Esquiú in Catamarca, Argentina, TyC Sports will televise a fight in which super welterweight Gabriel “El Terrible” Corzo 17(3KO)-0 will try to climb in the ranking from his 14th WBO position fighting for a minor belt against Jose Hugo “Chinito” Acevedo 14(8KO)-3(3)-2.

Saturday, November 19
The only world championship of the week will be the one between WBA cruiserweight champion Arsen Goulamirian and mandatory challenger Aleksei Egorov, two strong fighters who should offer an entertaining clash. In the support, Milan Prat will be the clear favorite to be crowned European super welterweight champion against substitute Stephen Danyo and Kevin Lele Sadjo will be even more favorite to retain his European super middleweight title against the flawed Emre Cukur. Preview of Goulamirian-Egorov fight following the link.

As for the most famous boxer that will enter the ring on Saturday, this will be Mexican former world champion Jaime Munguía, although, once again, he will face a very poorly matched fight. This time his opponent will be Gonzalo Coria, who lost in just two rounds against Janibek Alimkhanuly. Preview of the fight following the link.

Cartel promocional del evento Liam Davies vs. Ionut Baluta

Saturday will also have an evening organized by Frank Warren from the Telford International Center in Telford, United Kingdom, and broadcast by BT Sport, in which unbeaten Liam Davies 12(5KO)-0 will face by far the biggest test of his career to date against the combative Romanian Ionut Baluta 15(3KO)-3, with the vacant European super bantamweight belt at stake.
In the betting odds, the tall and effective Davies is the favorite, and if he takes advantage of his qualities counterpunching, he could perfectly achieve victory. However, if he is not firm enough or hesitates when unleashing his shots, the high pace and unexpected attacks of Baluta, who has chained five very meritorious performances and who often creates messy fights with his aggressiveness, could turn Davies in another boxer who suffers an upset defeat against the Romanian.

In the same bill, former world light heavyweight challenger Anthony Yarde 22(21KO)-2(1) will face an easy tune-up fight, before challenging Artur Beterbiev in January, facing Stefani Koykov 14(12KO)-1(1) and welterweights Eithan James 9(0KO)-0 and Connor Parker 14(1KO)-1(1) will square off in a well-matched bout.

Finally, RCC Boxing will also offer an event aired through YouTube. In this event, which will take place at the RCC Boxing academy in Yekaterinburg, Russia, the very promising super middleweight Pavel Silyagin 11(5KO)-0 will face his third fight of the year against Argentinian Abraham Buonarrigo 11(9KO)-3, who comes from losing in a very controversial way against the undefeated Russian Aslambek Idigov.

In addition, the evolved super featherweight Mark Urvanov 21(10KO)-3-1 will face a tough fight against the always competent René “Gemelo” Alvarado 32(21KO)-12(1), super lightweight prospect Khariton Agrba 9(5KO)-0 will look to knock out Julius Indongo 24(13KO)-6(4) and Nikita Zon 4(3KO)-0-1 and Manuk Dilanyan 12(5KO)-9(5)-2 will meet in an interesting super middleweight clash.

Closing this article, these other fights can also be mentioned:
-At the Palasport Dal Lago in Novara, Italy, broadcast on YouTube, local Martina Bernile 4(1KO)-1-1 will try to become European flyweight champion battling for the vacant title against Frenchwoman Justine Lallemand 8(1KO )-1-1.
-At the Magna Center in Rotherham, United Kingdom, broadcast by Fightzone, the European welterweight champion Kirstie Bavington 6(2KO)-2-2 will defend her crown against German Naomi Mannes 6(4KO)-0.
-At the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, United States, two boxers coming off defeats such as Toka Khan Clary 28(19KO)-3(1), who was beat by Shakur Stevenson, and former world title challenger Jonathan Oquendo 31(19KO)-7(2), who was controversially defeated by Jamel Herring, will face each other trying to bounce back.
-At the Club Albatros in Montevideo, Uruguay, broadcast by TyC Sports, the undefeated Dominican Francis Frometa 16(10KO)-0, 14th WBA at lightweight, will try to strengthen his position by fighting for a minor title against Argentinian Javier Herrera 17( 8KO)-6-1.
-At the York Hall in London, United Kingdom, Sajid Abid 11(1KO)-1(1) and Mikey Sakyi 9(4KO)-3 will meet in an eliminator for the English super lightweight title.
