Lomachenko logró merecida victoria unánime en muy exigente combate contra gran Jamaine Ortiz

En su regreso al cuadrilátero el ucraniano Vasyl Lomachenko 17(11KO)-2 se topó con un boxeador absolutamente dispuesto a intentar catapultar su carrera venciéndole. No obstante, aunque el estadounidense Jamaine “The Technician” Ortiz 16(8KO)-1-1 ofreció la mejor actuación de su trayectoria en su mayor reto hasta la fecha y se ganó una nueva buena oportunidad, Lomachenko se hizo con una victoria por decisión unánime y justas cartulinas de 115-113, 116-112 y 117-111.
Las cosas no empezaron demasiado bien para Lomachenko que, enfrentándose a un boxeador joven, motivado, veloz y con mayores dimensiones, en el comienzo recibió jabs y directos y además padeció una inflamación en su pómulo derecho, quizás por un cabezazo. Con todo, “Loma” poco a poco empezó a adaptarse a su oponente, le hizo fallar muchas manos con sus entradas y salidas y empezó a encontrar el camino para afilados jabs, buenos directos de izquierda y astutas combinaciones de rectos.
Pese a ello, Ortiz se había preparado muy bien para este combate en cuanto a estudiar a su oponente y utilizar un adecuado planteamiento y cuando el europeo trató de reaccionar él utilizó sus rápidos puños con agresividad al ataque y anticipación a la contra. Incluso sus habituales clinches esta vez los aprovechó para golpear con mucha garra. Pero aunque dio todo lo mejor de sí, los jabs y rectos del ucraniano le fueron aguijoneando de manera crecientemente eficaz con sus uno-dos y dos-uno. Estos golpes provocaron una inflamación muy seria bajo el ojo izquierdo de Ortiz, que empezó entonces a caer en las trampas creadas por las diagonales de su adversario.
Con todo, aunque encaró dificultades que hicieron a otros derrumbarse moralmente, Ortiz siguió lanzando manos con explosividad intentado dañar o contener al excampeón mundial, de modo que todavía logró capturar rounds en la segunda mitad, algo que pocos pueden decir en un enfrentamiento contra Lomachenko. Sin embargo, aunque Ortiz podía impresionar con sus fugaces combinaciones, el móvil y astuto Lomachenko impactó las manos más contundentes y significativas en el último tercio, incluso sacudiendo la cabeza de su rival con un uppercut en el noveno asalto.
Ciertamente, “Loma” no mostró las energías de otras peleas y su cierre no fue ni mucho menos tan intenso o abrumador como en otras ocasiones, pero impactó más manos claras con sus cortos directos y logró asegurarse la victoria ante un Ortiz que se esforzó mucho hasta el final y que le obligó a aplicarse a fondo con las esquivas durante los doce asaltos.
Ahora el plan es que Lomachenko se enfrente a Devin Haney por el título indiscutido del peso ligero que el estadounidense posee. Aunque los problemas de Lomachenko con Ortiz han hecho que muchos se precipiten al descartar las opciones de victoria del ucraniano en esa pelea, lo cierto es que no pocos también cometieron el mismo error respecto a Oleksandr Usyk, cuyas opciones de éxito ante Anthony Joshua se menospreciaron ridículamente tras sus complicaciones ante Derek Chisora.
Es evidente que Lomachenko no ofreció ni de lejos su mejor versión ante Ortiz, algo que tanto él mismo como Haney (que subió al ring tras la pelea) saben. Pero por un lado no se debe restar mérito a un Ortiz que demostró sus virtudes y que tiene mucho futuro por delante. Y por el otro no se debe dudar respecto a que con este duro combate de preparación, sumado a su deseo de lograr la corona indiscutida, Lomachenko ofrecerá un boxeo mucho más sólido ante Haney y que éste último, gane o pierda, tendrá una de las peleas más intrincadas de su carrera.

On his return to the ring, the Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko 17(11KO)-2 ran into a boxer absolutely willing to try to bring his career to a new level by beating him. However, while American Jamaine “The Technician” Ortiz 16(8KO)-1-1 delivered his best performance in his biggest challenge to date and earned another good opportunity, Lomachenko claimed a unanimous decision win with fair scorecards of 115-113, 116-112 and 117-111.
Things did not start too well for Lomachenko who, facing a young, motivated, fast and larger boxer, initially received jabs and straight punches and also suffered inflammation in his right cheekbone, perhaps due to a headbutt. All in all, “Loma” gradually began to adapt to his opponent, made him miss many hands with his constant movements and began to find the way for sharp jabs, good straight lefts and cunning combinations.
Despite this, Ortiz had prepared very well for this fight in terms of studying his opponent and using a proper approach, and when the European tried to react he used his fast hands aggressively on attack and was very clever on the counter. This time he even took advantage of his usual clinches to throw hands with a lot of grit. But although he did his best, the Ukrainian’s jabs and straight hands hit him increasingly effectively through one-two and two-one combinations. These strikes caused a very serious swelling under Ortiz’s left eye, and the local boxer then began to fall into the traps created by the angles used by his opponent.
Still, though he was facing difficulties that made others crumble morally, Ortiz continued to throw explosive hands trying to hurt or contain the former world champion, so he still managed to capture rounds in the second half, something few can say in a matchup against Lomachenko. However, while Ortiz could impress with his fast combinations, the mobile and astute Lomachenko struck with the most forceful and significant hands in the last third of the fight, an he even shook his opponent’s head with an uppercut in the ninth round.
Certainly, «Loma» did not show the energy of other bouts and his closing of the fight was not nearly as intense or overwhelming as on other occasions, but he landed more clear hands with his straight punches and managed to secure the victory against Ortiz, who tried very hard until the end and forced the favorite to apply himself thoroughly with the dodges during the twelve rounds.
Now the plan is for Lomachenko to face Devin Haney for the undisputed lightweight title the American holds. Although Lomachenko’s problems with Ortiz have already made many refuse to give the Ukrainian chances of victory in that potential fight, the truth is many also made the same mistake regarding Oleksandr Usyk, who was ridiculously underestimated before his first fight against Anthony Joshua after his difficulties against Derek Chisora.
It is clear that Lomachenko did not offer his best version against Ortiz, something that both the former champion and Haney (who entered the ring after the fight) know. But on the one hand, Ortiz deserves credit for his performance, in which he demonstrated his virtues and that he has a great future ahead. And on the other hand, there should be no doubt that with this hard preparation duel, added to his desire to achieve the undisputed crown, Lomachenko will offer a much more solid boxing against Haney and that the latter, win or lose, will have one of the most intricate fights of his career.
