Además de estar en juego el primer cinturón significativo de su carrera, para la peso supergallo británica, 5ª WBA, Ellie Scotney 6(0KO)-0 una victoria ante la 3ª WBA, la española Mary Romero 8(2KO)-3, podía situarla realmente cerca de su primer mundial. En este decisivo encuentro, Scotney cumplió su objetivo y venció a la campeona de Europa por decisión unánime y tarjetas de 97-93, 97-94 y 96-94.
En lugar de aprovechar su ventaja en fuerza para crear una intensa guerra, Romero cometió el error de intentar boxear de manera táctica ante la hábil púgil local. De ese modo, aunque la titular pudo llegar con alguna aislada buena contra, Scotney escogió cortos directos diestros, jabs y ganchos zurdos para ganar rounds ante una Romero que, como tantas otras veces, arremetió de forma desordenada y embarró las acciones con recurrentes clinches.
Además de usar una estrategia equivocada, Romero se cansó un tanto por su excesivo movimiento, algo que con el paso de los minutos le llevó a perder aún más efectividad y a que Scotney fuese más consistente con sus aciertos. De hecho, los precisos golpes de la británica fueron yendo a más hasta que en el noveno round sus aislados hooks al torso dañaron a su oponente y sus directos al rostro movieron a Romero, que continuó hasta el final en su errada estrategia y pagó el precio.
Cully volvió a brillar
El peso ligero irlandés Gary Cully 15(9KO)-0 ya estaba despuntando como un interesantísimo prospecto en la división antes de lo sucedido el sábado, en el que volvió a deslumbrar. Y es que, aunque se suponía que iba a afrontar un test exigente ante un motivado espigado e invicto boxeador con buen rendimiento reciente como Jaouad “Le Bombardier Marocain” Belmehdi 16(7KO)-1(1)-3, Cully se deshizo de él en poco más de 30 segundos.
Belmehdi cometió el error de salir demasiado agresivo y bastante descontrolado, fallando manos ante las ballestas de su rival y recibiendo cortos rectos antes de que un izquierdazo del zurdo Cully le arrojase al tapiz. Belmehdi intentó ponerse en pie, pero se desequilibró una vez tras otra y el combate fue parado.

In this decisive match, Scotney fulfilled her mission and beat the European champion by unanimous decision and scorecards of 97-93, 97-94 and 96-94.
Instead of using her advantage in strength to create an intense war, Romero made the mistake of trying to box tactically against the skilled local fighter. In this way, although the titlist was able to land some counterpunches, Scotney chose short straight hands, jabs and left hooks to win rounds against Romero, who, like so many other times, attacked lacking order and entangled the actions with recurring clinches.
In addition to using a wrong strategy, Romero got a bit tired due to her excessive movement, something that in the second half led her to lose even more effectiveness and helped Scotney to be more consistent with her successes. In fact, the British’s precise punches landed more and more clearly until in the ninth round her isolated hooks to the body hurt her opponent and her straight punches to the face shook Romero, who kept using until the end a wrong strategy and paid the price.
Cully shined again
