Plaza de Toros, Ciudad de México, México. Peso superligero.

Reshat Mati

The undefeated Reshat Mati obtained a hard-fought and unconvincing victory against substitute Eduardo Leonel Rodríguez

Plaza de Toros, Mexico City, Mexico. Super lightweight.

There are prospects that the first time you see them fight they dazzle with their qualities and performance, but this is not the case of the young American Reshat «The Albanian Bear» Mati 13(7KO)-0, who has had some not too convincing performances and a boxing not nearly as impressive as that of other undefeated fighters.

Although it is true that he could have had problems dealing with the altitude of Mexico City (2.2240 m/7349 ft), on Saturday Mati had another not brilliant performance that did not even convince him, since in his debut at super lightweight he had some difficulties to defeat by unanimous decision (triple 97-93) the Mexican substitute Eduardo Leonel Rodríguez 10(5KO)-3(1)-1.

Despite entering the fight with short notice, Rodríguez did not give up at the first opportunity as so many other boxers have done in similar circumstances but, on the contrary, offered a considerable effort. Advancing on his opponent, Rodríguez found breaches for good hooks and some straight shots against Mati, who has a defense not as good as he thinks and who had to apply himself to not suffer serious difficulties initially, beyond a hard clash of heads.

However, Mati’s advantage in skill and his longer preparation for this fight allowed him to take the lead, since his opponent’s pace, pressure and hitting rate gradually decreased and he landed clear right hands, one-twos, counter lead hooks, right uppercuts, etc. In addition, the American resorted to clinches and opportune side steps to stop Rodríguez’s progression, and when the Mexican sporadically intensified his attacks again Mati offered precise response through counterattacks.

Given the circumstances in his favor, it’s fair to say Mati wasn’t too forceful or dominant enough, and in both the seventh and eighth rounds he seemed to be hurt by body shots that forced him to clinch. Still, with his jabs, movement and astute punch selection he managed to maintain the distance and the lead in the scores to end up obtaining the win.

Although Mati still has time to develop and improve before facing decisive fights, his position is not ideal. Apart from the fact that he does not have a boxing without flaws, the welterweight division is currently really difficult not only at its summit, but in the positions around the top 15, while in his debut at super lightweight his physical performance was poor and it could have been affected by the extra weight cut. Thus, in the next half dozen fights, Mati and his team will have a lot to work on and a lot to adjust to try to find the most appropriate path and follow it in the best possible way.
