Alycia Baumgardner unificó tres cinturones mundiales con cuestionable decisión dividida ante Mikaela Mayer

El triunfo de Mikaela Mayer 17(5KO)-1 ante Maiva Hamadouche fue cuestionable y entonces perfectamente podría haber perdido su récord invicto. Con todo, en su disputado encuentro ante Alycia «The Bomb» Baumgardner 13(7KO)-1, la victoria de Mayer habría sido perfectamente justificable al igual que un empate. Sin embargo, los jueces dieron cartulinas de 97-93 y doble 95-96 a favor de “The Bomb”, pese a las protestas del público.
Baumgardner se puso por delante en el comienzo utilizando bien su juego de piernas, su alcance y su velocidad de manos para llegar con su jab, reposicionarse y contragolpear con derechas. Mayer estaba incómoda y no lograba encontrar su boxeo ante el estilo hábil y contragolpeador de su contrincante. No obstante, desde el tercer round Mayer se adaptó al ritmo de su rival, ajustó su timing y empezó a llegar bien con su jab y a encontrar huecos para buenos directos diestros y ganchos zurdos.
Tras un buen comienzo en el que se mostró bravucona, cuando las cosas empezaron a ir mal “The Bomb” empezó a mostrar dudas en su rostro, su jab se diluyó y, aunque pudo tirar de reflejos y explosividad con alguna mano aislada, recurrió demasiado al clinch. Así, Mayer recuperó la distancia perdida y amenazó con decantar claramente de su lado el duelo.
Necesitando reaccionar, en el séptimo asalto Baumgardner realizó alguna rápida embestida, pero en el octavo Mayer tuvo momentos eficaces en el boxeo sin iniciativa usando su jab y cortos contragolpes. Con la pelea igualada, Mayer volvió a encontrar el camino para repetidos directos diestros en el noveno episodio, pero Baumgardner se mostró más activa en el último round.
Lo lógico sería que ambas disputasen una revancha, pero teniendo en cuenta la actitud de Baumgardner, es de esperar que trate de pactar un combate contra la monarca mundial WBA Hyun-Mi Choi, algo difícil, ya que la coreana ha rechazado repetidas veces unificar contra las otras monarcas y ha eludido constantemente aspirantes difíciles en sus defensas.
En cualquier caso, más allá de la posibilidad de que la coreana pueda terminar cediendo a la presión para que unifique, a Baumgardner no le faltarán grandes peleas potenciales, entre ellas un ascenso al peso ligero buscando retar a Katie Taylor.

A pesar de la evidente calidad de los dos combates principales del evento, el undercard de la cartelera era sobre el papel un despropósito, y sobre el ring las malas perspectivas se cumplieron, siendo tres prácticas de tiro de un solo lado.
La oro olímpica británica Lauren Price 2(1KO)-0 venció en cuatro asaltos a la húngara Timea Belik 6(2KO)-7(2). A menudo Belik se quedó en el centro del ring frontal, rígida y con la guardia abierta, por lo que Price impactó duros uno-dos o combinaciones directo-gancho que sacudieron la cabeza de la visitante hasta que el tercer hombre se apiadó de ella y detuvo este espantosamente emparejado duelo.
Por su parte, la olímpica británica Caroline Dubois 4(3KO)-0 ganó un combate del peso ligero ante la búlgara Milena Koleva 10(4KO)-15(4)-1. Con su gran ventaja en alcance, velocidad y habilidad, la zurda Dubois conectó por mucho las manos más significativas de cada round y se anotó un knockdown en el cuarto asalto (aunque la caída fue causada por un empujón) ante una Koleva que realizó desordenadas y torpes ofensivas. En el quinto episodio un hook de izquierda al torso por parte de Dubois dañó a Koleva, que fue golpeada hasta la detención.
La emisión de la velada Shields-Marshall se inició con una abrumadora victoria (juez-árbitro, 60-54) de la peso pluma británica, bronce olímpica, Karriss Artingstall 2(0KO)-0 sobre la francesa Marina Sakharov 5(3KO)-17(1)-2. Portando la iniciativa o cediéndola, Artingstall conectó series de rectos, ganchos diestros arriba y abajo, izquierdas rectas y otros puños para dominar las acciones ante una rival con mucha más voluntad que habilidad.

Mikaela Mayer’s 17(5KO)-1 win over Maiva Hamadouche was questionable and she could very well have lost her undefeated record then. All in all, in her contested match against Alycia «The Bomb» Baumgardner 13(7KO)-1, Mayer’s victory would have been perfectly justifiable as well as a draw. However, the judges gave cards of 97-93 and double 95-96 in favor of «The Bomb», despite the protests in the arena.
Baumgardner took the lead at the start using her footwork, her reach and her hand speed, landing the jab, repositioning and countering with right hands. Mayer was uncomfortable and couldn’t find her boxing against her opponent’s skillful, counter-punching style. However, from the third round Mayer adapted to the rhythm of her rival, adjusted her timing and began to connect well the jab and to find gaps for good straight right hands and left hooks.
After a good start in which she was a bit cocky, when things started to get difficult Bamgaurdner began to show doubts on her face, her jab faded and, although she was able to use her reflexes and explosiveness with some isolated hands, she resorted too much to the clinch. Thus, Mayer recovered the lost ground in the scores and threatened to win clearly the duel.
Needing to react, in the seventh round Baumgardner made some good and quick lunges, but in the eighth Mayer had effective moments boxing without initiative using her jab and short counterpunches. With the fight even, Mayer found the way again for repeated right hands in the ninth round, but Baumgardner was more active in the final round.
The logical thing would be for both to fight in a rematch, but taking into account Baumgardner’s attitude, it is to be expected that she will try to reach a bout against the WBA world champion Hyun-Mi Choi, something hard, since the Korean has repeatedly refused to unify against the other monarchs and has consistently eluded difficult challengers in her defenses.
In any case, aside from the possibility that the Korean could end up accepting to unify, Baumgardner will not be short of big potential fights, including a move up to lightweight looking to challenge Katie Taylor.
Undercard results
Despite the evident quality of the two main fights of the event, the undercard looked nonsensical on paper, and in the ring the bad prospects were fulfilled, as the three bouts were one-sided shooting practices.
British Olympic gold medalist Lauren Price 2(1KO)-0 beat in the fourth round Hungarian Timea Belik 6(2KO)-7(2). Belik often stood in the center of the ring frontal, stiff and with her guard wide open, so Price landed hard one-twos or straight-hook combinations that shook the visitor’s head until the third man took pity on her and stopped this awfully matched duel.
For her part, the British Olympian Caroline Dubois 4(3KO)-0 won a lightweight match against the Bulgarian Milena Koleva 10(4KO)-15(4)-1. With her great advantage in range, speed and skill, the southpaw Dubois landed by far the most significant hands of each round and scored a fourth-round knockdown (although it was caused by a push) against Koleva, who used messy and clumsy offensives. In the fifth round a left hook to the body by Dubois hurt Koleva, who was beaten until the stoppage.
The broadcast of the Shields-Marshall evening began with an overwhelming victory (judge-referee, 60-54) of the British featherweight, Olympic bronze medalist, Karriss Artingstall 2(0KO)-0 over the French Marina Sakharov 5(3KO)-17(1)-2. Advancing or using lateral movements, Artingstall landed combinations of straight punches, lead hooks up and down, straight lefts and other hands to dominate the actions against an opponent with much more will than skill.
