Preview: Eliminator Plant vs. Dirrell, heavyweight duel Sánchez-Negrón and Russell-Rodríguez II in Wilder-Helenius’ support

Following the prevailing current trend, one more PPV card will not have an overall great level, but will basically support its chances of success in the excitement that the main event could generate among the fans, in this case Wilder’s return against Helenius. For the rest, the evening that will take place this Saturday at the Barclays Center in New York, United States, will have fights with limited interest for most fans.

Former champions trying to refloat
The co-main event will be the most interesting match of the undercard, since it will be a WBC super middleweight eliminator between two former world champions trying to refloat as the American Caleb “Sweet Hands” Plant 21(12KO)-1(1) and Anthony “The Dog” Dirrell 34(25KO)-2(1)-2. In any case, although with a superficial analysis the fight seems to have great incentives to watch it, the fact is that despite not being completely badly matched, it has a clear favorite and many think that, fighting in an eliminator, both receive an excessive prize considering their recent merits.

Plant enters this fight after a loss and about a year of inactivity, since he has not fought since November 2021, when he was beaten by TKO against Canelo Álvarez. For his part, Dirrell, who has generated repeated doubts about his level during his career, will also step in the ring after 11 months inactive and a single victory to end a bad streak of performances: a controversial victory against Yildirim, a knockout suffered against Benavídez and a draw against Kyrone Davis.

In any case, as both are long-distance fighters with certain technical virtues, if they try to be offensively incisive they could offer a tactically interesting clash. On the other hand, although a convincing Plant win is expected, the fight will also serve to make comparisons with the victory that Benavídez achieved against Dirrell and to begin to assess the adjustments that «Sweet Hands» has made with his new trainer.

An overlooked heavyweight
When talking about outstanding heavyweight contenders, the name of Cuban Frank Sánchez 20(13KO)-0 is often forgotten despite the fact that he is an unbeaten, with an extensive amateur career, ranked 3rd WBC and WBA, who has had multiple wide victories and that in his biggest fight he knocked down and defeated the prospect Efe Ajagba. Still, if Sánchez is overlooked it is mainly because he has an style that, despite being effective, is considered by many to be dull, lackluster and lacking in spectacularity.

This will surely affect him negatively in his plans for reaching great fights, which is why PBC has put him against an opponent like Puerto Rican Carlos Negrón 25(20KO)-3(3), a boxer well below the top 15 level, who has not fought for more than a year and who, above all, has chin issues. In fact, Negrón has been knocked out by Dominic Breazeale and by Brian Howard, who in his turn was easily beaten by stoppage against Ajagba and Frank Sánchez himself. Thus, it is predictable that this time Sánchez will achieve a good knockout that will help him somewhat to improve his image as a boring boxer before aiming for the biggest fight of his career.

Rematch due to a headbutt
The fight that will open the PPV segment of the Wilder-Helenius event will put in the ring a member of the Russell family, bantamweight Gary Antonio Russell 19(12KO)-0, who will try to leave behind unsatisfactory performances fighting Puerto Rican former world champion Emmanuel “Manny” Rodríguez 20(13KO)-2(1).

Russell’s last three bouts have been a controversial victory over Alexandro Santiago, a controversial technical decision win against Juan Carlos Payano (who suffered a serious cut) and a first-round No Contest against Emmanuel Rodríguez, again due to another serious cut caused by the undefeated American. Therefore, Russell could hardly enter this rematch on a more disappointing streak, so he needs to win and do it brilliantly if he wants to try to convince people that he could deserve a place at the top of the bantamweight division.

In the opposite corner he will have Rodríguez who, although he has not achieved a relevant victory since he was beaten by Naoya Inoue (May 2019), is a skilled boxer that in his best version could generate important tactical difficulties. However, it remains to be seen if, even if he is effective enough, the judges will recognize his victory or it will happen again as in the awful robbery he suffered against Reymart Gaballo.

The Deontay Wilder vs. Robert Helenius card will be broadcast in the United States through a Fox Sports PPV that will start at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT, 2:00 a.m. in the United Kingdom.
