Por fin, después de varios eventos de PBC en los cuales no se pudo acceder desde fuera de Estados Unidos a la retransmisión de las pugnas previas a la cartelera estelar, Showtime Sports tuvo la cortesía de emitir de forma visible para los demás países el respaldo preliminar de la velada Fundora-Ocampo. Como parte de dicho segmento, el exretador mundial lituano Egidijus “Mean Machine” Kavaliauskas 23(18KO)-2(2)-1 venció un enfrentamiento del peso wélter ante el estadounidense Mykal “The Professor” Fox 22(5KO)-4 por decisión unánime. Las puntuaciones fueron excesivas: 100-88, 99-89 y 98-90.
El zurdo Fox caminó por el ring intentando imponer su altura y alcance, pero el fuerte y experimentado Kavaliauskas presionó inteligentemente buscando la forma de impactar golpes mucho más contundentes que los de su contrincante. Esta táctica le dio resultados y, tras dañar con una mano diestra a su rival en el segundo round, en el tercer episodio volvió a dejar tocado a Fox y le hostigó con agresivas andanadas de golpes hasta anotarse dos knockdowns.
Aunque pudo parecer que el combate estaba a punto de terminar, Fox resistió y en los siguientes episodios incluso tuvo sus mejores momentos, evitando la pegada de su contrincante con su movilidad, usando su jab y contragolpeando con buenos ganchos diestros. Kavaliauskas disminuyó entonces mucho su eficacia inicial, y por momentos tuvo complicaciones tácticas ante los jabs y los uno-dos del dinámico y espigado estadounidense.
Con todo, aunque Fox pareció anotarse más asaltos de los que le dieron los jueces, Kavaliauskas, con los dos knockdowns a su favor y un exitoso primer tercio, sólo necesitó volver a encontrar el camino para sus golpes de poder en el último tramo para, capturando rounds salteados, asegurarse la victoria a ojos de la gran mayoría de observadores.
Catorce meses después de su desmoralizante derrota ante Gabriel Maestre, que fue tan polémica que incluso supuso que la Association of Boxing Commissions amenazase a la WBA con prohibirle operar en Estados Unidos si no hacía cambios (la WBA empezó entonces su proceso de reducción de titulares y cambió de país su sede), Fox sufrió un nuevo tropiezo que le deja en una posición comprometida. En cambio, Kavaliauskas rebotó de su derrota ante Vergil Ortiz Jr. (agosto de 2021) y retornó a la actividad a la vez que puso sus miras en importantes oportunidades.

Finally, after several events in which the broadcast of the fights prior to the main card was not available outside the United States, Showtime Sports had the courtesy to air for all countries the support of the Fundora-Ocampo evening. As part of that segment, Lithuanian former world title challenger Egidijus “Mean Machine” Kavaliauskas 23(18KO)-2(2)-1 won by unanimous decision a welterweight matchup against American Mykal “The Professor” Fox 22(5KO)-4. The scores were excessive: 100-88, 99-89 and 98-90.
The southpaw Fox walked around the ring trying to impose his height and reach, but the strong and experienced Kavaliauskas intelligently pressed looking for a way to connect much more forceful blows than those of his opponent. This tactic paid off and, after rocking his opponent with a right hand in the second round, in the third round Kavaliauskas again hurt Fox and attacked him with furious barrages of punches until scoring two knockdowns.
Although it seemed that the fight was about to end, Fox resisted and in the following rounds he even had his best moments, avoiding his opponent’s power with his mobility, using his jab and counter-punching with good right hooks. Kavaliauskas greatly diminished his initial effectiveness and at times had tactical difficulties against the jabs and one-twos of the mobile and tall American.
Still, while Fox seemed to win more rounds than the judges gave him, Kavaliauskas, with two knockdowns and a successful first third, only needed to find the way to land his power shots again in the final stretch to capture some more rounds and secure victory in the eyes of the vast majority of viewers.
Fourteen months after his demoralizing loss to Gabriel Maestre, which was so controversial that it even led the Association of Boxing Commissions to threat the WBA with banning it from operating in the United States if it didn’t make changes (the sanctioning body then began its process of reducing titlists and moved its headquarters to another country), Fox suffered a new setback that puts him in a compromised position. On the other hand, Kavaliauskas bounced back from his loss to Vergil Ortiz Jr. (Aug. 2021), returned to activity and will put his sights on important opportunities.
