The WBA orders Gennadiy Golovkin vs. Erislandy Lara

The WBA informed before the bout between Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin that, if the Kazakh won that duel at super middleweight and decided to return to middleweight after it or if he lost it and had to settle for his 160-pound titles, the next step would be to order him to face the mandatory challenger Erislandy Lara. Well, that’s how it has been, continuing in this way the Association’s plan to reduce champions.

This fight should have been ordered months ago since, according to the WBA rules, after Golovkin beat in April Ryota Murata he had 120 days to face the mandatory challenger Lara. However, a special permission allowed “GGG” to postpone that match and face the third fight against Canelo Álvarez. Now Golovkin and Lara will have a month to reach an agreement (till October 23) or else the fight will go to a purse bid with a split 75-25 in the champion’s favor.

After Golovkin’s poor performance throughout the first half of his clash against Canelo and a late and unsuccessful reaction attempt, there are many who are convinced that the best thing for him to do is to retire. However, in the event that this is not his immediate plan, the fight against Lara could be his best option.

Surrounded by douts about his current capacities and coming off a clear loss, Golovkin is in no position to face a unification next against the WBC world champion Jermall Charlo or the WBO world titlist Janibek Alimkhanuly. Instead, a fight against Lara might be a more appropriate challenge, since the Cuban has almost his age and, despite his victories at middleweight against opponents below the top 15 level, he has also lost leg speed and is fading, something that was clearly visible against Gary O’Sullivan.

Thus, perhaps Golovkin can have in Lara a definitive test as to whether he should continue his career as a boxer, since if he cannot defeat the veteran «American Dream», who was hit at close range and somewhat worn out by the limited O’Sullivan, he will not have chance of victory against elite boxers in good shape.
