El enfrentamiento entre Leigh Wood y Mauricio Lara se presentaba como un choque muy interesante después de la sobrenatural resistencia mostrada por el primero ante Michael Conlan y de la contundente victoria lograda por el mexicano ante Josh Warrington. Sin embargo, con el aplazamiento del Wood-Lara, finalmente el combate estelar del evento de Matchroom Boxing de este sábado desde el Nottingham Arena de Nottingham, Reino Unido, será un encuentro muy diferente, y posiblemente mucho menos intenso.
Y es que los británicos Maxi “Maximus” Hughes 25(5KO)-5(2)-2 y Kid Galahad 28(17KO)-2(1) se medirán en una pugna del peso ligero que podría ser muchísimo más táctica que la que se habría ofrecido en el combate estelar original. Hughes es conocido por su estilo móvil, astuto y contragolpeador en el que suele tener mucha importancia la defensa, ofreciendo en ocasiones peleas muy monótonas, mientras que Galahad es un boxeador más incisivo pero que quizás pueda recurrir a un estilo comedido después del brutal knockout padecido ante Kiko Martínez.
Lo cierto es que, al margen de la posibilidad de que ambos puedan terminar dejando un entretenido duelo de astucias con frecuentes entradas y salidas, el mayor interés de la pugna parece estar en cómo condicionará las trayectorias de ambos. Es decir, ¿podrá Hughes extender la mejor racha de su carrera, que le llevó de piedra de toque a aparecer en el top 15, sumando un nuevo nombre destacado a los de Carroll, Kotochigov, Straffon y Walsh?, ¿o enderezará su carrera un excampeón mundial como Galahad, que asciende dos divisiones tras una derrota durísima para su moral que le conllevó muchas críticas?
Rankin vs. Harper
En el evento, Galahad no será el único exmonarca mundial que tratará de recobrar impulso tras un demoledor knockout logrando una victoria importante en una división superior. Y es que la extitular del peso superpluma Terri Harper 12(6KO)-1(1)-1, que padeció el knockout del año en el boxeo femenino en 2021 ante Alycia Baumgardner, ascenderá desde el peso ligero al superwélter para retar a la monarca WBA “Hannah The Banger” Rankin 12(3KO)-5(1).
Sea lógico o no, el hecho es que tanto Galahad como Harper parten como favoritos en sus duelos, considerándose básicamente que (pese a estar sus rivales en racha en divisiones superiores) ambos tienen más talento y más virtudes que Hughes y Rankin. En el caso del Hughes-Galahad, es cuestionable que “Maximus” tenga una gran desventaja en técnica o habilidad respecto a su oponente, especialmente teniendo en cuenta sus últimas actuaciones, pero Harper aparentemente sí tiene un boxeo más sólido, ordenado y pulido que la dura y fuerte pero algo tosca Rankin.
Así, la clave del combate podría estar en si Harper es capaz de usar sus rectos desde la distancia media y larga controlando los espacios o si por el contrario cae en una batalla de intercambios en la que Rankin podría tener ventaja.
Resto del respaldo principal
Si no hay cambios en el evento, en teoría la cartelera principal contará con tres peleas de desarrollo para tres invictos de la compañía. En una de ellas, el peso wélter Cyrus Pattinson 4(2KO)-0 afrontará su primer combate pactado a diez asaltos midiéndose al exaspirante al título francés Jorick Luisetto 12(3KO)-4, boxeador competente, que nunca ha sido batido antes del límite y que llega de anotarse una victoria como visitante en Alemania.
Por otro lado, el peso pesado Solomon “The Real Deal” Dacres 4(1KO)-0 intentará mejorar su pobre porcentaje de knockouts enfrentándose a Dominic Akinlade 9(4KO)-3(1)-1, que ha boxeado una única vez desde que en 2017 fue batido en el primer round por Martin Bakole, y el peso crucero Cheavon Clarke 2(2KO)-0 pugnará contra el argentino Marcos Nicolás “El Comandante” Karalitzky 7(2KO)-5-2, que ha padecido sus últimas dos derrotas por decisión ante el olímpico Yamil Peralta.
DAZN ofrecerá esta cartelera el sábado desde las 20:00 en hora española, las 19:00 en Reino Unido y las 14:00 ET/11:00 PT.

The fight Leigh Wood vs. Mauricio Lara looked like a very interesting clash after the supernatural resistance shown by the former against Michael Conlan and the resounding victory achieved by the Mexican against Josh Warrington. However, with the postponement of the bout Wood-Lara, finally the main event of this Saturday’s Matchroom Boxing event from the Nottingham Arena in Nottingham, United Kingdom, will be a very different matchup, and possibly a much less intense one.
That is because the British Maxi «Maximus» Hughes 25(5KO)-5(2)-2 and Kid Galahad 28(17KO)-2(1) will face each other in a lightweight fight that could be much more tactical than would have been the original main event. Hughes is known for his mobile, cunning and counterpunching style in which defense is key, generating sometimes very monotonous fights, while Galahad is a more incisive fighter but who perhaps may resort to a contained pace after the brutal knockout suffered against Kiko Martínez.
The truth is that, apart from the possibility that both may end up offering an entertaining duel of astuteness with frequent short attacks, the greatest interest in the bout seems to be in how it will affect their careers. That is to say, can Hughes extend the best streak of his career, which took him from stepping stone to appear in the top 15, adding a new important name to those of Carroll, Kotochigov, Straffon and Walsh? Or will a former world champion like Galahad straighten his career moving up two divisions after a very tough defeat for his morale that led to a lot of criticism?
Rankin vs. Harper
At the event, Galahad will not be the only former world champion trying to regain momentum after a devastating knockout by scoring a significant victory in a higher weight class. Former super featherweight titleholder Terri Harper 12(6KO)-1(1)-1, who suffered the 2021 knockout of the year in female boxing against Alycia Baumgardner, will move up from lightweight to super welterweight to challenge the WBA monarch “Hannah The Banger” Rankin 12(3KO)-5(1).
Whether it is considered logical or not, the fact is that both Galahad and Harper are betting favorites in their bouts, as basically it is considered that (despite their opponents being on a roll in higher divisions) both have more talent and other virtues than Hughes and Rankin. In the case of Hughes-Galahad, it is questionable that «Maximus» has a great disadvantage in technique or ability respect his opponent, especially considering his recent performances, but Harper does apparently have a more solid and skillful boxing than the hard and strong but somewhat crude Rankin.
Thus, the key to the fight could be whether Harper is able to use her straight punches from medium and long range controlling the distance or if, on the contrary, she enters in a battle of exchanges in which Rankin could have advantage.
Rest of the main support
If there are no changes in the bill, in theory the main card will have three development fights for three undefeated fighters of the company. In one of them, welterweight Cyrus Pattinson 4(2KO)-0 will face his first ten-round fight against former French national title challenger Jorick Luisetto 12(3KO)-4, a competent boxer who has never been beaten by stoppage and that comes from scoring a decision victory in Germany.
On the other hand, heavyweight Solomon “The Real Deal” Dacres 4(1KO)-0 will try to improve his poor knockout ratio against Dominic Akinlade 9(4KO)-3(1)-1, who has boxed only once since he was beaten in the first round by Martin Bakole in 2017, while cruiserweight Cheavon Clarke 2(2KO)-0 will fight against the Argentinian Marcos Nicolás «El Comandante» Karalitzky 7(2KO)-5-2, who has suffered his last two losses by decision against the Olympian Yamil Peralta.
