Frank Sánchez vs. Carlos Negrón y Gary Antonio Russell vs. Emmanuel Rodríguez completarán el PPV del Wilder-Helenius

Hace casi un mes que se confirmó oficialmente que Deontay Wilder y Robert Helenius se enfrentarán el día 15 de octubre en un combate del peso pesado que encabezará una velada desde el Barclays Center de Nueva York, Estados Unidos, siendo su combate de semifondo el choque del peso supermedio entre Caleb Plant y Anthony Dirrell. Extraoficialmente, desde hace unos días también se sabía quiénes iban a completar la cartelera principal en PPV, pero no ha sido hasta ahora que ha llegado el anuncio oficial.
Antes del Plant-Dirrell tendrá lugar un combate del peso pesado entre el cubano Frank Sánchez 20(13KO)-0 y el puertorriqueño Carlos Negrón 25(20KO)-3(3), pelea con poco o ningún sentido en la que el primero será abrumador favorito para imponerse a la espera de un reto mucho mayor. Por otro lado, la emisión del PPV se iniciará con una revancha entre el estadounidense Gary Antonio Russell 19(12KO)-0 y el puertorriqueño Emmanuel Rodríguez 20(13KO)-2(1), quienes se midieron en agosto de 2021 en un encuentro terminado sin decisión en el primer asalto por un choque de cabezas.
En las declaraciones adjuntas al anuncio, Sánchez expresó su intención de usar este combate para acercarse a la condición de retador obligatorio:
“Carlos Negrón es un oponente peligroso, pero estaré preparado para cualquier cosa que traiga. Pretendo buscar un knockout contra Negrón para demostrar a los fans del boxeo que soy un boxeador y un pegador. Siento que soy el mejor peso pesado del mundo y el 15 de octubre me llevará un paso más cerca de la muy importante meta de convertirme en aspirante obligatorio para una oportunidad por título mundial en 2023”.
Por su parte, Negrón señaló lo siguiente:
“Conozco a Frank, y nunca he sido un boxeador que llame a otros boxeadores o que hable de otro boxeador, así que no sé por qué pidió enfrentarse a mí. Cuando mi entrenador me dijo que quería enfrentarse a mí, no me lo tomé como algo personal. Me lo tomé como un reto. Me dio una motivación increíble, y ahora quiero pelear contra él. Veamos qué puedo hacer contra buena oposición. Siempre he dado lo mejor de mí contra mejores oponentes. Así que el 15 de octubre, veremos quién es el mejor”.
En cuanto a Russell, éste expresó su intención de hacer lo que sea necesario para ganar, aunque esperemos que eso no implique una vez más el uso de cabezazos:
“Me alegro de que Emmanuel y yo tengamos nuestra oportunidad de volver a enfrentarnos el 15 de octubre. Nada ha cambiado en cuanto a mi objetivo. Voy a entrar al ring en el Barclays Center para hacer lo que tenga que hacer para terminar el combate victorioso”.
Finalmente, Rodríguez mostró una confianza total, puede que excesiva, en lograr el triunfo:
“He estado entrenando en México durante mucho tiempo y lejos de mi familia para poder concentrarme en el combate que definirá mi futuro. Russell es un buen boxeador que ha sido evitado durante su carrera, pero vengo a demostrar que estoy en otro nivel. Ganaré sin dificultad y estaré de vuelta en el top de la división del peso gallo. El 15 de octubre se va a dar cuenta de que no está a mi nivel”.

Almost a month ago it was officially confirmed that Deontay Wilder and Robert Helenius will face each other in a heavyweight fight that will headline an evening on October 15 from the Barclays Center in New York, United States, with the co-feature being a super middleweight clash between Caleb Plant and Anthony Dirrell. Unofficially, for a few days it was also known who was going to complete the main card on PPV, but it has not been until now that the official announcement has arrived.
Before the co-main event there will be a heavyweight matchup between Cuban Frank Sánchez 20(13KO)-0 and Puerto Rican Carlos Negrón 25(20KO)-3(3), a fight with little or no meaning in which the former will be overwhelming favorite to win while waiting a much bigger challenge. On the other hand, the broadcast of the PPV will begin with a rematch between the American Gary Antonio Russell 19(12KO)-0 and the Puerto Rican Emmanuel Rodríguez 20(13KO)-2(1), who met in August 2021 in a match ended in a first round no-decision due to a clash of heads.
In the statements included in the announcement, Sánchez expressed his intention to use this fight to get closer to the status of mandatory challenger:
“Carlos Negron is a dangerous opponent, but I will be ready for whatever he brings. I intend to look for a knockout against Negron to demonstrate to boxing fans that I am both a boxer and a puncher. I feel I am the best heavyweight in the world and October 15 will bring me one step closer to the very important goal of becoming mandatory contender for a world title opportunity in 2023.’’
For his part, Negrón said:
“I know Frank, and I’ve never been a fighter to call any other fighters out or speak of any other boxer, so I don’t know why he asked to fight me,” said Negron. “When my coach told me he wanted to fight me, I didn’t take it personally. I took it like a challenge. It gave me incredible motivation, and now I want to fight him. Let’s see what I can do against good competition. I have always done my best against better opponents. So come October 15th, let’s see who’s the better man.”
As for Russell, he stated his intention to do whatever it takes to win, though hopefully that doesn’t mean headbutting again:
“I’m glad that Emmanuel and I will get our chance to have a redo on October 15th. Nothing has changed as far as my objective. I’m coming into the ring at Barclays Center to do whatever I have to do in order to finish this fight victorious.”
Finally, Rodríguez showed total confidence, perhaps excessive confidence, in his victory:
“I’ve been training in Mexico for a long time and away from my family so that I can focus on this fight that will define my future. Russell is a good fighter who has been avoided throughout his career, but I’ve come to show that I’m on another level. I will win hands down and be back on top of the bantamweight division. On October 15, he’s going to realize that he’s not on my level.”
