As finally the clash did not take place, we can only speculate what would have happened if the Mexican Juan Francisco «El Gallo» Estrada 43(28KO)-3, instead of fighting Argi Cortés 23(10KO)-3-2, had battled a boxer with more quality experience like Joshua Franco. In any case, the fact is that Estrada faced Cortes and against him he won a narrow unanimous decision despite scoring a knockdown. The scorecards were fair: 114-113 and double 115-112.

In the beginning, Cortes erroneously approached the matchup tactically, so Estrada was able to use his advantage in skill, accuracy and ring intelligence to land more accurate jabs, astute lead hooks, counter uppercuts and isolated right hands. Cortes did his best and put a lot of will into the bout, but even when his timing was the appropriate, Estrada answered immediately or made him miss with smooth and excellent dodges.

However, when the underdog stood his ground and used his hooks with power at close range, like in the fourth round, his results were much better, and he even rocked Estrada. This motivated Cortés excessively, who in the fifth episode unleashed a flurry of hooks with his rival against the ropes but, attacking hastily, missed shots and received sharp and dangerous counters. Still, it’s true that when the intensity decreased in the sixth round, Cortes threw good jabs and precise counterpunches between lateral movements.

All in all, the lack of experience of Cortés, who had never gone beyond the eighth round, seemed to show through his irregularity and his punctual lose of firmness, something that in the seventh round supposed him to be shaken by several straight rights and, finally, falling to the mat by a left hook to the body. Out of courage and instinct, Cortés recovered and in the following rounds kept order in his movements, but the solid pressure of «El Gallo» earned him then the control of the actions with his jab, his right hand and his left hooks up and down.

Despite this, in the tenth round Cortés had some brief and good actions on the attack and in the eleventh round he offered notable response countering, so the difference in the scorecards got closer. Nevertheless, in the last round Estrada landed clear straight hands while using his skillful dodges and secured victory in all three cards.

The mastery shown by Estrada in his recurrent defensive actions and his determination when things were not going quite right were commendable, but in general once again he lowered his performance to the level of his opponent and his reaction to the punishment received was not exactly ideal. On the contrary, if he had had an elite fighter in front of him, he could have had a very bad time.

That said, in principle now there should be no more obstacles for the materialization of the third fight between Estrada and Román González, which in theory should take place in December. In any case, taking into account the number of rumors denied, postponements and tentative dates that this trilogy has accumulated in total, perhaps at this point we will have to settle for at least, sooner or later, end up seeing the third match.
